Git Switch

Scope Constraints

• Write operation — changes the current branch and updates the working tree
• Does not create branches unless --create flag is used
• Does not push, fetch, or interact with remotes
• Does not discard uncommitted changes automatically — prompts user first

Input Sanitization

• Branch names: only alphanumeric characters, hyphens, underscores, and forward slashes. Reject spaces, .., shell metacharacters, or null bytes. The special value - (previous branch) is also accepted.

/git-switch - Switch Branches Safely

Switch to a different branch with smart handling of uncommitted changes.

Usage

/git-switch main                # Switch to main
/git-switch feat/dark-mode      # Switch to feature branch
/git-switch -                   # Switch to previous branch
/git-switch --create feat/new   # Create and switch

Workflow

Step 1: Check for Uncommitted Changes

# Check for both staged and unstaged changes

Step 2: Handle Uncommitted Changes

If changes exist, present options:

When branch name is partial or ambiguous, show matches:

Multiple branches match 'feat/':

  feat/dark-mode
  feat/user-auth
  feat/api-v2

Specify full name to switch.
