Review Scope

Review all Python files (.py) changed on the feature branch plus any uncommitted changes.

Identifying Files to Review

Primary: Feature branch changes

git diff --name-only main...HEAD -- '*.py'

This shows all Python files changed since branching from main. Use this to review committed work from the iteration loop.

Secondary: Uncommitted changes

git diff --name-only HEAD -- '*.py'

This shows unstaged Python file changes. Combine with feature branch changes for complete coverage.

Fallback: When on main branch

When directly on main (no feature branch), fall back to uncommitted changes only:

git diff --name-only HEAD -- '*.py'

When to Use Each Scope

Project Context

Before applying built-in standards, check for project-specific Python conventions that may override or extend them.

Configuration Files

CLAUDE.md (project root)

The primary project configuration file. Look for:

• Codebase Patterns section with Python-specific conventions
• Type annotation preferences and idioms
• Docstring format requirements
• Logging configuration patterns

AGENTS.md (project root)

Agent-specific instructions that may include:

• Python coding standards for autonomous agents
• Patterns that should be preserved despite appearing non-standard
• Project-specific naming conventions

.ralph/python-code-reviewer-standards.md (optional override)

Skill-specific overrides that completely customize the review:

Precedence Rules

When project configuration exists, apply rules in this order:

1. Skill-specific override (.ralph/python-code-reviewer-standards.md) - highest priority
2. Project conventions (CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md) - override built-in defaults
3. Built-in standards (this document) - baseline when no overrides exist

Project rules always take precedence over built-in standards. If a project's CLAUDE.md says "use Optional[X] for Python 3.9 compatibility," respect that convention.

Standards

Core Rules

These are blocking requirements. Violations produce errors that must be fixed.

Static Typing

• ALL functions and methods have complete type hints for arguments and return values
• Use modern Python 3.11+ syntax:
  • X | None instead of Optional[X]
  • list[str] instead of List[str]
  • dict[str, int] instead of Dict[str, int]
• Any use of typing.Any requires justification in a docstring

Docstrings (Google Style)

• Every public module, class, method, and function must have a docstring
• Format:
  • One-line imperative summary (e.g., "Calculate the total price.")
  • Detailed description if behavior is non-obvious
  • Args section with types and descriptions
  • Returns section with type and description
  • Raises section listing expected exceptions

Zero Inline Comments Policy

• NO inline comments (# ...) allowed in code
• Code must be self-documenting through clear naming
• Exceptions: # type: ignore with justification, # noqa with rule code

Logging Standards

• Use logging.getLogger(__name__) - never print() or root logger
• Appropriate log levels:
  • DEBUG: Diagnostic details for debugging
  • INFO: Routine operational messages
  • WARNING: Unexpected but handled situations
  • ERROR: Failures that prevent a specific operation
  • CRITICAL: System-wide failures
• Use logger.exception() in except blocks
• Never log sensitive information (passwords, tokens, PII)

Code Formatting

• Code must pass ruff check with no errors
• Code must pass ruff format --check with no changes needed

Quality Assessment

These are non-blocking recommendations. Violations produce warnings.

Naming

• Descriptive variable and function names
• Follows PEP 8 naming conventions
• Consistent naming patterns throughout

Function Length

• No function longer than ~50 lines
• Complex logic should be extracted into helper functions

Complexity

• No deeply nested logic (max 3-4 indentation levels)
• Consider early returns to reduce nesting

Error Handling

• Specific exceptions, not bare except:
• Informative error messages

Security

• No hardcoded secrets
• Safe input handling

Your Process

Phase 1: Gather

1. Identify changed Python files:

Phase 2: Analyze

For each file, check:

1. Type hints: All functions have complete annotations
2. Modern syntax: Uses X | None, list[str], etc.
3. Any usage: Any Any types have docstring justification
4. Docstrings: Public APIs have Google-style docstrings
5. Comments: No inline comments (except allowed exceptions)
6. Logging: Uses logging.getLogger(__name__), no print()
7. Naming: Follows PEP 8, descriptive names
8. Function length: Under ~50 lines
9. Complexity: Max 3-4 nesting levels
10. Error handling: Specific exceptions with good messages
11. Security: No hardcoded secrets

Classify each issue:

• error: Violates blocking requirement (types, docstrings, comments, logging, formatting)
• warning: Quality issue (naming, length, complexity, error handling, security)
• suggestion: Minor improvement opportunity

Phase 3: Report

1. Generate the structured output format
2. Include all issues with file:line locations
3. Summarize counts by severity
4. Emit the verdict tag
