Best Practices

• Pin provider versions - Use ~> for minor updates, exact for critical
• Use remote state - Never store state locally for team projects
• Enable state locking - Prevent concurrent modifications
• Mark sensitive outputs - Use sensitive = true for secrets
• Validate inputs - Add validation blocks to variables
• Use locals for computed values - Keep configurations DRY

Common Rationalizations

Verification

• State is stored in a remote backend with locking enabled (no committed local terraform.tfstate).
• terraform plan output was reviewed before apply; any destroy/recreate of a stateful resource was intentional.
• No secrets appear in HCL, variable defaults, or committed tfvars; they are sourced from a secrets manager.
• Modules are versioned and reused across environments rather than copy-pasted per environment.
• A validation step runs in CI: terraform validate and terraform fmt -check (plus policy-as-code where used).
