Session Log: Creating Skill Context Window MicroSim
Date: November 19, 2025 Objective: Create a new p5.js MicroSim to visualize the progressive disclosure principle for Claude Skills
Session Overview
This session successfully created a new educational MicroSim called "skill-context-window" that visualizes how Claude Skills use progressive disclosure to manage context window efficiency. The MicroSim demonstrates the three-level loading system: Frontmatter (always loaded), SKILL.md File (when triggered), and Assets/Resources (as needed).
User Requirements
Initial Request:
"Use the microsim-p5 skill to create a new microsim called
skill-context-window. It will display a triangle with hover infoboxes exactly like the knowledge-triangle MicroSim. However, in this version we just have three layers and text with no background objects."
Specifications:
Three text-only layers (no background objects like in knowledge-triangle):
- Top: "SKILL.md Frontmatter"
- Middle: "SKILL.md File"
- Base: "Assets, Resources, Templates and Rules"
Hover infoboxes describing when each layer loads into context:
- Frontmatter: When Claude starts up (always in context, ~100 words)
- SKILL.md File: When the skill is triggered/running (<5k words)
- Assets/Resources: When Claude decides to load more resources (as needed, unlimited)
Visual design: Similar triangle structure to knowledge-triangle but simplified
Implementation Process
Step 1: Used microsim-p5 Skill
Invoked the microsim-p5 skill to understand the standard patterns and requirements for creating educational MicroSims with p5.js.
Key Requirements from Skill:
- Responsive canvas design (width-responsive)
- Two-region layout: drawing area + control area
- Clean, educational visual design
- Proper metadata and documentation
- Integration with mkdocs navigation
Step 2: Analyzed knowledge-triangle MicroSim
Read the existing knowledge-triangle.js file to understand:
- Triangle geometry calculations
- Layer boundaries and point-in-polygon detection
- Hover detection and infobox rendering
- Text positioning and formatting
Key patterns identified:
getTriangleWidthAtY()for calculating triangle width at any y-positionisPointIn[Layer]()functions for hover detectiondrawInfoBox()with shadow effects and word wrapping- Layer separation using horizontal lines
Step 3: Created MicroSim Files
File 1: skill-context-window.js (10K)
Canvas Structure:
let canvasWidth = 600;
let drawHeight = 500;
let controlHeight = 50;
let canvasHeight = drawHeight + controlHeight;
Three Layers Defined:
let frontmatterLayerTop; // Top of triangle
let skillFileLayerTop; // 1/3 down
let assetsLayerTop; // 2/3 down
Visual Design:
- Yellow (#FFF9C4): Frontmatter layer - warmth indicates "always present"
- Blue (#E3F2FD): SKILL.md file layer - coolness indicates "on demand"
- Green (#E8F5E9): Assets layer - growth/expansion indicates "unlimited potential"
Hover Detection: Three boolean detection functions:
isPointInFrontmatterLayer(x, y)isPointInSkillFileLayer(x, y)isPointInAssetsLayer(x, y)
Infobox Content: Each layer displays:
- Title (color-coded header bar)
- Description of what's in the layer
- Size information (e.g., "~100 words", "<5k words", "Unlimited*")
- Loading behavior (e.g., "At startup", "When triggered", "As needed")
Key Features:
- Text-only visualization (no background objects)
- Clean, professional educational design
- Responsive canvas that adapts to container width
- Professional infoboxes with shadow effects
- Word-wrapped content text
File 2: main.html (523B)
Standard p5.js wrapper:

Step 7: Text Position Adjustment
User Request: "Move the text in the top of the triangle with the value SKILL.md Frontmatter down 50"
Implementation: Changed from:
text('SKILL.md Frontmatter', centerX, frontmatterLayerTop + (skillFileLayerTop - frontmatterLayerTop) / 2 - 8);
text('(Always in context)', centerX, frontmatterLayerTop + (skillFileLayerTop - frontmatterLayerTop) / 2 + 15);
To:
text('SKILL.md Frontmatter', centerX, frontmatterLayerTop + (skillFileLayerTop - frontmatterLayerTop) / 2 - 8 + 50);
text('(Always in context)', centerX, frontmatterLayerTop + (skillFileLayerTop - frontmatterLayerTop) / 2 + 15 + 50);
User Fine-Tuning:
The user then manually adjusted the second line from +50 to +43 for better visual balance:
text('(Always in context)', centerX, frontmatterLayerTop + (skillFileLayerTop - frontmatterLayerTop) / 2 + 15 + 43);
Screenshot Regeneration: After adjustment, screenshot was recaptured showing improved text positioning.
Technical Architecture
Triangle Geometry
Calculation Method:
function getTriangleWidthAtY(y) {
let relativeY = y - triangleTop;
let ratio = relativeY / triangleHeight;
return triangleBase * ratio;
}
This linear interpolation creates the triangle shape:
- Narrow at top (frontmatter - small scope)
- Medium in middle (SKILL.md - moderate scope)
- Wide at base (assets - unlimited scope)
Layer Boundaries
frontmatterLayerTop = triangleTop; // 60px from top
skillFileLayerTop = triangleTop + triangleHeight / 3; // 1/3 down
assetsLayerTop = triangleTop + 2 * triangleHeight / 3; // 2/3 down
Rationale:
- Equal vertical division emphasizes three distinct stages
- Visual proportions match conceptual importance
- Each layer gets adequate space for text
Hover Detection
Point-in-Polygon Algorithm:
function isPointInFrontmatterLayer(x, y) {
if (y < frontmatterLayerTop || y > skillFileLayerTop) return false;
let centerX = canvasWidth / 2;
let widthAtY = getTriangleWidthAtY(y);
let leftEdge = centerX - widthAtY / 2;
let rightEdge = centerX + widthAtY / 2;
return x >= leftEdge && x <= rightEdge;
}
How it works:
- Check vertical bounds (y-coordinate range)
- Calculate triangle width at mouse's y-position
- Check horizontal bounds (x-coordinate range)
- Return true if point is inside triangle slice
Infobox Rendering
Features:
- Shadow effect: Semi-transparent black rectangle offset by 4px
- Rounded corners: 8px border radius
- Color-coded header: Matches layer color scheme
- Word wrapping: Automatic text wrapping to fit box width
- Smart positioning: Stays on screen (flips to left/top if needed)
Word Wrap Algorithm:
let words = content.split(' ');
let line = '';
let yPos = boxY + 45;
let maxWidth = boxWidth - 24;
for (let word of words) {
let testLine = line + word + ' ';
let testWidth = textWidth(testLine);
if (testWidth > maxWidth && line.length > 0) {
text(line, boxX + 12, yPos);
line = word + ' ';
yPos += 18;
} else {
line = testLine;
}
}
text(line, boxX + 12, yPos);
Educational Design Principles
Progressive Disclosure Visualization
The MicroSim makes abstract concepts concrete:
Concept: Skills use a three-level loading system to manage context efficiently
Visualization:
- Size - Triangle width represents scope/size of each layer
- Color - Different colors represent different loading behaviors
- Position - Vertical stacking shows loading hierarchy
- Text - Clear labels explain what's in each layer
Learning Benefits:
- Visual metaphor (triangle = expanding scope)
- Color coding (yellow/blue/green = always/triggered/as-needed)
- Interactive exploration (hover to learn details)
- Concrete examples (word counts, loading triggers)
Bloom's Taxonomy Alignment
Understanding (Comprehend):
- Explain the three-level system
- Describe when each layer loads
Applying (Use):
- Design a skill using the three layers
- Decide what goes in each layer
Analyzing (Examine):
- Compare trade-offs between context usage and capability
- Evaluate why frontmatter is always loaded while assets are on-demand
Lesson Plan Structure
Target Audience: Developers creating Claude Skills, AI prompt engineers
Duration: 15-20 minutes
Activities:
- Introduction (3 min) - Context window challenge, progressive disclosure solution
- Exploration (7 min) - Hover over layers, discuss size differences, compare strategies
- Analysis (5 min) - Why different loading strategies? Trade-off discussions
- Application (5 min) - Design a hypothetical skill, justify layer placement
Assessment:
- Formative: Monitor discussions
- Summative: Design skill architecture
- Extended: Create actual skill following pattern
Comparison to Knowledge Triangle
Similarities
- Triangle geometry and visualization
- Three-layer structure
- Hover detection with infoboxes
- Color-coded layers
- Educational focus
Key Differences
| Aspect | Knowledge Triangle | Skill Context Window |
|---|---|---|
| Background Objects | Yes (1s/0s, circles, graph nodes) | No (text only) |
| Focus | Data → Information → Knowledge | Frontmatter → SKILL.md → Assets |
| Visual Complexity | High (animated elements) | Low (clean text) |
| Domain | Data science / Information theory | AI architecture / Software design |
| Loading Concept | Transformation stages | Progressive disclosure |
| Interactivity | Hover only | Hover only |
| Layer Content | Visual metaphors | Textual descriptions |
Design Rationale for Simplification
Why text-only?
- Focus on concept - Progressive disclosure is about information management, not visual complexity
- Clarity - Text makes the layer content explicit
- Accessibility - Easier to understand without decoding visual metaphors
- Professional - Clean design suitable for technical documentation

Key Learnings
1. Progressive Disclosure is a Powerful Pattern
The three-level system demonstrated in this MicroSim solves a real problem:
- Problem: Claude's context window is limited
- Solution: Only load what's needed, when it's needed
- Benefit: Unlimited skill complexity without context bloat
2. Visual Simplicity Can Enhance Understanding
By removing the background objects from knowledge-triangle:
- Concept is clearer
- Focus is sharper
- Message is stronger
Design principle: When visualizing abstract concepts, start simple and add complexity only when it adds clarity.
3. Color as Communication
The color choices communicate loading behavior:
- Yellow (warm): Always present, foundational
- Blue (cool): On-demand, professional
- Green (growth): Expansive, unlimited
Color isn't just aesthetic—it's semantic.
4. Educational MicroSims Need Multiple Contexts
A good educational MicroSim provides:
- Visual - The interactive simulation
- Textual - Documentation and explanation
- Pedagogical - Lesson plans and learning objectives
- Technical - Metadata for discovery and integration
This MicroSim includes all four.
