Context-Triggered Skills Implementation
Overview
Context-triggered skills enable automatic skill detection based on file patterns and keywords in the current context. This reduces manual skill discovery and ensures relevant expertise is always available.

Trigger System Components
1. Trigger Detection (triggers.ts)
Core Functions:
// Main detection function
detectTriggeredSkills(
context: { files?: string[], text?: string },
skillTriggers: Map<string, SkillTriggers>
): TriggerMatch[]
// File pattern matching (supports glob-like patterns)
matchFilePattern(filePath: string, pattern: string): boolean
// Keyword extraction and filtering
extractKeywordsFromText(text: string): string[]
// Format results for display
formatTriggerMatches(matches: TriggerMatch[], limit: number): string
Scoring:
- File match: +10 points per file
- Keyword match: +5 points per keyword
- Results sorted by score descending
Pattern Support:
*.md- Any markdown file**\/test/**\/- Test directories anywheresrc/**\/*.test.ts- Test files in src subdirectories- Case-insensitive matching
2. Type Definitions (types.ts)
export interface SkillTriggers {
/** File patterns (glob-like: *.test.ts, **\/spec.js) */
files?: string[];
/** Keywords in context that trigger this skill */
keywords?: string[];
}
export interface SkillMeta {
// ... existing fields
triggers?: SkillTriggers;
}
3. Frontmatter Parsing (providers/local.ts)
New Methods:
// Parse trigger fields from YAML frontmatter
private parseTriggers(frontmatter: string): SkillTriggers | undefined
// Get all skills with trigger definitions
public getAllTriggers(): Map<string, SkillTriggers>
Frontmatter Format:
---
skill_name: example-skill
description: Description here
trigger_files: ["*.test.ts", "*.spec.js"]
trigger_keywords: [testing, jest, vitest]
---
4. MCP Tool (index.ts)
Tool Definition:
{
"name": "skill_auto_detect",
"description": "Auto-detect skills based on file patterns and keywords",
"inputSchema": {
"properties": {
"files": { "type": "array", "items": { "type": "string" } },
"text": { "type": "string" },
"limit": { "type": "number" }
}
}
}
Handler Logic:
- Validate input (requires files or text)
- Get all skill triggers from local provider
- Call
detectTriggeredSkills() - Format and return results
Usage Examples
Example 1: Documentation Context
Input:
skill_auto_detect({
files: ["docs/api.md", "README.md"],
text: "We need to check the documentation token budget"
})
Output:
## Auto-Detected Skills (2 matched)
| Skill | Score | Matched Files | Matched Keywords |
|-------|-------|---------------|------------------|
| token-budget-check | 25 | docs/api.md, README.md | documentation, token, budget |
| link-validation | 20 | docs/api.md, README.md | documentation |
Use `skill_get(name)` to load a skill.
Example 2: Test Context
Input:
skill_auto_detect({
files: ["src/auth.test.ts"],
text: "Add unit tests for authentication"
})
Output:
## Auto-Detected Skills (1 matched)
| Skill | Score | Matched Files | Matched Keywords |
|-------|-------|---------------|------------------|
| test-automation | 20 | src/auth.test.ts | unit-tests, testing |
Example 3: SKILL.md Frontmatter
Input:
skill_auto_detect({
files: ["templates/skills/new-skill/SKILL.md"],
text: "Validate the YAML frontmatter structure"
})
Output:
## Auto-Detected Skills (1 matched)
| Skill | Score | Matched Files | Matched Keywords |
|-------|-------|---------------|------------------|
| frontmatter-validation | 20 | templates/skills/.../SKILL.md | yaml, frontmatter, validate |
Integration with Agents
Automatic Skill Loading
Agents can integrate trigger detection into their workflow:
// At task start
const context = {
files: task.modifiedFiles,
text: `${task.title} ${task.description}`
};
const matches = await skill_auto_detect(context);
// Load top matching skill
if (matches.length > 0) {
const topSkill = matches[0];
const skill = await skill_get({ name: topSkill.skillName });
// Use skill content...
}
Benefits for Agents
- Reduced Search Time: No manual skill search needed
- Context Awareness: Skills match current work
- Expertise On-Demand: Relevant patterns auto-loaded
- Token Efficiency: Only load skills that match context
Pattern Matching Algorithm
File Pattern Matching
Pattern: *.test.ts
Files:
- src/auth.test.ts ✓ Match
- test/auth.spec.ts ✗ No match
- auth.ts ✗ No match
Pattern: **\/test/**\/*
Files:
- src/test/auth.ts ✓ Match
- test/auth.ts ✓ Match
- src/auth.ts ✗ No match
Keyword Extraction
Input Text:
We need to validate the documentation and check for broken links
Extracted Keywords:
[validate, documentation, check, broken, links]
Stop Words Removed:
we, need, to, the, and, for
Minimum Length: 3 characters
Performance Considerations
Caching
- Skill triggers cached in memory per session
- Re-parsed only when SKILL.md modified
skill_discover()forces re-scan
Complexity
- File matching: O(n × m) where n = files, m = patterns
- Keyword matching: O(k × w) where k = keywords, w = trigger words
- Overall: Linear with skill count, optimized with early filtering
Memory
- Trigger maps stored in LocalProvider
- ~100 bytes per skill trigger definition
- Minimal overhead for typical skill counts (<100)
Future Enhancements
Possible Additions
- Regex Patterns: Full regex support for complex patterns
- Composite Triggers: AND/OR logic for triggers
- Context History: Learn from past detections
- Confidence Scores: Statistical relevance modeling
- Auto-Load: Automatically inject top skill into context
- Trigger Analytics: Track trigger hit rates
Extension Points
// Custom scoring function
interface TriggerScoringConfig {
fileMatchScore: number;
keywordMatchScore: number;
minimumScore: number;
}
// Advanced pattern matching
interface AdvancedTriggers extends SkillTriggers {
filePatterns?: RegExp[];
excludeFiles?: string[];
requireAll?: boolean; // AND vs OR matching
}
Testing
Manual Testing
cd mcp-servers/skills-copilot
npm run build
node dist/test-triggers.js
Test Cases
- ✅ Markdown files trigger documentation skills
- ✅ Keywords in text trigger relevant skills
- ✅ Combined file + keyword increases score
- ✅ No matches returns empty list
- ✅ Glob patterns match correctly
Integration Testing
Add to MCP server test suite:
test('skill_auto_detect returns ranked matches', async () => {
const result = await callTool('skill_auto_detect', {
files: ['docs/api.md'],
text: 'validate documentation links'
});
expect(result.matches.length).toBeGreaterThan(0);
expect(result.matches[0].score).toBeGreaterThan(0);
});
