Validation Patterns by Tool Type

Standard Version Flag

Most tools support --version:

tool_name --version

Version to Stderr

Some tools (especially Java ecosystem) output to stderr:

java -version 2>&1

Version Command Without Dash

cargo version
go version

Short Version Flag

tmux -V

Subcommand Version

git --version
pip --version

First Line Only

When tools output multiple lines:

tool_name --version | head -1

Regex Version Extraction

For tools with verbose output:

eslint --version 2>&1 | grep -oE '[0-9]+\.[0-9]+\.[0-9]+'

Exit Code Conventions

• 0: All validations passed
• 1: One or more required tools missing
• 2: Configuration error
• 126: Tool found but not executable
• 127: Tool not found

Environment Variable Patterns

Tool Location Discovery

# Check if tool exists in PATH
command -v tool_name

# Get full path
which tool_name

# Check specific location
if [[ -x "/usr/local/bin/tool_name" ]]; then
    echo "Found at specific location"
fi

Version Manager Environment Loading

# NVM
if [[ -s "$HOME/.nvm/nvm.sh" ]]; then
    source "$HOME/.nvm/nvm.sh"
fi

# Cargo
if [[ -f "$HOME/.cargo/env" ]]; then
    source "$HOME/.cargo/env"
fi

# SDKMAN
if [[ -s "$HOME/.sdkman/bin/sdkman-init.sh" ]]; then
    source "$HOME/.sdkman/bin/sdkman-init.sh"
fi
