GTM Configuration

1. Create Data Layer Variables for ecommerce parameters
2. Create Custom Event trigger for 'purchase'
3. Create GA4 Event tag:
   • Event Name: purchase
   • Map ecommerce parameters to event parameters
4. Test in Preview mode
5. Publish

Critical Implementation Rules

Transaction ID

• Must be unique for each purchase
• Same transaction_id = duplicate (deduped by GA4)
• Use order number or generate unique ID

Currency

• Always include with monetary events
• Use ISO 4217 codes (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD)
• Same currency for value and item prices

Items Array

• Include at least item_id OR item_name (required)
• Keep items array consistent across events
• Maximum 27 items per event

Value Calculation

• Should match sum of (price * quantity) for all items
• Include discounts in calculation
• Exclude tax and shipping from item values

Testing Recommended Events

DebugView Validation

1. Enable debug mode
2. Complete user journey
3. For each event, verify:
   • Event name matches exactly
   • All required parameters present
   • Parameter values correct
   • Items array structure valid

Ecommerce Validation Checklist

• view_item fires on product pages
• add_to_cart fires when adding items
• begin_checkout fires at checkout start
• purchase fires once per transaction
• transaction_id is unique
• Value matches cart total
• Currency included on all monetary events
• Items array populated correctly

Common Issues

Duplicate Purchases

Cause: Same transaction_id sent multiple times Solution: Ensure unique ID, implement prevention logic

Missing Revenue

Cause: Currency parameter missing Solution: Always include currency with value

Empty Items Array

Cause: Data not available when event fires Solution: Validate items array before sending

Wrong Event Names

Cause: Using custom names instead of recommended Solution: Use exact recommended event names (case-sensitive)

Key Events (Conversions)

Mark recommended events as key events for conversion tracking:

2. Find event (e.g., purchase)
3. Toggle "Mark as key event"
