Session Log: Creating LinkedIn Announcement Generator Skill

Session Log: Creating LinkedIn Announcement Generator Skill

Date: 2025-11-20 Task: Create a new skill called linkedin-announcement-generator Status: ✅ Completed

Objective

Create a new Claude skill that generates professional LinkedIn announcement text for intelligent textbooks by:

• Gathering key metrics from docs/learning-graph/*.md files
• Creating brief summaries of book content (chapters, words, concepts, etc.)
• Including the link to the published book
• Adding relevant hashtags for discoverability

Process Overview

Step 1: Research Existing Skill Structure

Files Examined:

• skills/book-metrics-generator/SKILL.md - To understand metrics collection patterns
• skills/readme-generator/SKILL.md - To understand content generation and documentation patterns

Key Learnings:

• Skills use YAML frontmatter with name:, description:, and license: fields
• SKILL.md files follow a structured format:
  • Overview
  • When to Use This Skill
  • Prerequisites
  • Workflow (step-by-step instructions)
  • Examples
  • Related Skills
  • Resources

Step 2: Analyze Available Data Sources

Files Analyzed:

• docs/learning-graph/book-metrics.md - Contains all textbook metrics in a table format
• mkdocs.yml - Contains site metadata (site_name, site_url, site_description, repo_url)

Metrics Available:

Site Metadata:

• Site Name: 'Claude Skills for Intelligent Textbooks'
• Site URL: 'https://dmccreary.github.io/claude-skills/'
• Repository: 'https://github.com/dmccreary/claude-skills'

Step 3: Create Skill Directory Structure

Command Executed:

mkdir -p skills/linkedin-announcement-generator

Result: Created directory at skills/linkedin-announcement-generator/

Step 4: Write SKILL.md

File Created: skills/linkedin-announcement-generator/SKILL.md

Structure Implemented:

1. YAML Frontmatter:

   ---
   name: linkedin-announcement-generator
description: This skill generates professional LinkedIn announcement text...
   license: MIT
   ---

2. Main Sections:

   • Overview
   • When to Use This Skill
   • Prerequisites
   • Workflow (10 detailed steps)
   • Example Output (3 variations)
   • Customization Options
   • Supporting Scripts
   • Quality Standards
   • Troubleshooting
   • Related Skills
   • Resources

Step 5: Workflow Design

The skill follows a 10-step workflow:

1. Gather Book Metadata - Extract info from mkdocs.yml and course-description.md
2. Analyze Book Metrics - Parse book-metrics.md table
3. Determine Textbook Completeness - Calculate completion percentage
4. Craft the Announcement Structure - 6 components (hook, description, metrics, tech disclosure, CTA, hashtags)
5. Apply Tone and Style Guidelines - Professional but approachable LinkedIn voice
6. Generate Multiple Variations - Full (1500-2000 chars), Medium (800-1200 chars), Concise (400-600 chars)
7. Add Optional Enhancements - Screenshots, collaboration invites, related links
8. Format and Present Output - Copy-paste ready format
9. Validate Announcement Quality - Checklist of 10 quality criteria
10. Deliver the Announcement - Final output with usage instructions

Step 6: Hashtag Strategy

Designed comprehensive hashtag categories:

• Standard: #AI, #GenAI, #Education, #EdTech, #OpenEducation, #OER, #ELearning
• Content-specific: #Textbook, #InteractiveTextbook, #MicroSims, #Visualizations, #Quizzes
• Technology: #MkDocs, #p5js, #Python, #ClaudeAI
• Domain-specific: Subject-dependent (e.g., #Mathematics, #Geometry, #Programming)
• Professional: #LMS, #CurriculumDesign, #InstructionalDesign, #STEMeducation

Target: 10-15 hashtags per announcement for optimal LinkedIn reach

Step 7: Example Announcements Created

The skill includes three complete example announcements demonstrating different lengths:

Full-Length Example (1,800 chars):

• Opening hook
• Detailed description
• Complete metrics list (8 bullet points)
• AI transparency statement
• Call to action
• 20 hashtags

Medium-Length Example (750 chars):

• Concise description
• Key metrics only (5 points)
• Brief AI mention
• Call to action
• 11 hashtags

Concise Example (300 chars):

• Essential info only
• Top 3 metrics
• Link
• 6 hashtags

Step 8: Verification

Verified skill creation:

ls -la skills/linkedin-announcement-generator/

Output:

total 40
drwxr-xr-x 3 dan staff 96 Nov 20 14:27 .
drwxr-xr-x 32 dan staff 1024 Nov 20 14:25 ..
