Source Setup Reference
Quick setup guide for each data source used by run-research.
Reddit — reddit-cli
Requires a free Reddit API app (script type, read-only).
- Create app: https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps → "create another app" → select "script"
- Add credentials to
~/.secrets:export REDDIT_CLIENT_ID="your_client_id" export REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET="your_client_secret" - Verify:
reddit-cli auth
Install: pip install reddit-cli (from ~/repos/myrepos/reddit-cli)
X / Twitter — bird
Uses your existing browser session — no API key needed.
- Install:
brew install birdor follow https://github.com/steipete/bird - Be logged into x.com in Safari or Chrome
- Verify:
bird --whoami
If cookie auth fails, set manually:
export AUTH_TOKEN=your_auth_token # from browser dev tools → Application → Cookies → x.com
export CT0=your_ct0_token
YouTube — yt-dlp + yt_research.py
- Install yt-dlp:
brew install yt-dlporpip install yt-dlp - The
yt_research.pyscript is bundled with the claudestsearch-youtubeplugin:~/.claude/plugins/cache/claudest/claude-utilities/0.1.4/skills/search-youtube/scripts/yt_research.py - Verify:
yt-dlp --version
Web Search — brave-search + brave-cli (placeholder)
Current (brave-search skill):
- Requires
BRAVE_API_KEYin~/.secrets - Get key: https://api.search.brave.com
- Add:
export BRAVE_API_KEY="your_key"to~/.secrets - Script:
~/.claude/skills/brave-search/scripts/search.mjs
Planned (brave-cli — in progress):
- Will be a standalone binary at e.g.
~/repos/myrepos/brave-cli - Same interface as
reddit-cli:brave-cli search "<query>" --output json - When built, update the PLACEHOLDER comment in
SKILL.mdStep 2 → Web Search
Fallback: Claude's native WebSearch tool is always available when BRAVE_API_KEY is not set.
