Tips
- Anchor every HR priority to a measurable business outcome — HR strategies that cannot be linked to revenue, cost, risk, or growth are difficult to fund and easy to cut when business conditions change.
- Use data and external benchmarks to build credibility with executive stakeholders — HR plans without numbers are easy to dismiss, while those grounded in turnover cost, time-to-fill, or engagement benchmarks are much harder to deprioritize.
- Review and refresh the HR strategic plan quarterly, not just annually.
- Involve people managers in workforce planning — they see skill gaps, attrition risk, and team capacity constraints months before the data surfaces in an HRIS, and their buy-in also makes the plan easier to execute.
- Keep the strategic plan concise—focus on 3-5 priorities rather than trying to cover everything.
- Distinguish between strategic initiatives (multi-year transformation, capability building) and operational improvements (quarterly process fixes) — conflating the two leads to HR plans that are too tactical to inspire investment or too vague to execute.
