• Talent mapping only creates value if someone owns keeping it current — assign clear ownership and a refresh cadence, not a one-time exercise.
• Separate "map" from "pipeline" — mapping identifies who exists and where; nurturing and engagement are separate, deliberate follow-on activities.
• Coordinate closely with succession planning so internal and external maps use the same readiness language and don't create conflicting signals.
