Cloud Security Engineer Role Bundle

A structured cloud security guide for engineers who own the security posture of cloud environments across AWS, Azure, and GCP. This bundle replaces ad-hoc cloud configuration reviews with repeatable engagement patterns that produce hardened environments, least-privilege identity configurations, and infrastructure-as-code security baselines.

When to Use

Invoke this role bundle when any of the following conditions are true:

• Cloud posture review needed. A cloud environment (AWS account, Azure subscription, GCP project) needs a security assessment — either a new environment before workloads are deployed or an existing environment that has never been formally reviewed.
• IaC security review. Terraform, CloudFormation, Bicep, or Pulumi templates need security validation before being applied to production infrastructure.
• Container orchestrator hardening. Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, GKE) or other container orchestration platforms need security configuration review — RBAC, network policies, pod security, and workload identity.
• Identity governance assessment. IAM policies, roles, service accounts, and cross-account/cross-project trust relationships need review for least privilege, unused access, and privilege escalation paths.
• Zero trust program. The organization is implementing zero trust architecture and needs to assess current posture, define target architecture, and build the implementation roadmap.

If the ask is about application-layer security (e.g., "review this API for BOLA"), use the appsec-engineer role bundle. If the ask is about overall security program maturity, use the vciso role bundle. This bundle is for cloud infrastructure security.

Engagement Types

Each engagement type defines a skill sequence. Run the skills in order — each one produces outputs consumed by the next.

1. AWS Posture Review

Trigger: New AWS account provisioned, existing account requiring security baseline assessment, or preparation for AWS-specific compliance audit.

Skill sequence:

Deliverable: AWS security posture report with CIS Benchmark mapping, IAM findings with privilege escalation paths, container security assessment, IaC hardening recommendations, and prioritized remediation plan.

2. Azure Posture Review

Trigger: New Azure subscription provisioned, existing subscription requiring security baseline assessment, or preparation for Azure-specific compliance requirements.

Skill sequence:

azure-review → iam-review → container-security → iac-security

Deliverable: Azure security posture report with CIS Benchmark and Azure Security Benchmark mapping, Entra ID findings, container security assessment, IaC hardening recommendations, and prioritized remediation plan.

3. GCP Posture Review

Trigger: New GCP project provisioned, existing project requiring security baseline assessment, or preparation for GCP-specific compliance requirements.

Skill sequence:

gcp-review → iam-review → container-security → iac-security

Deliverable: GCP security posture report with CIS Benchmark mapping, IAM findings with impersonation chain analysis, container security assessment, IaC hardening recommendations, and prioritized remediation plan.

4. Zero Trust Program

Trigger: Organization is adopting zero trust architecture, or existing network-perimeter security model is insufficient for hybrid/multi-cloud environments, remote workforce, or third-party access requirements.

Skill sequence:

zero-trust-assessment → iam-review → segmentation → privileged-access

Deliverable: Zero trust maturity assessment with NIST 800-207 mapping, identity security findings, segmentation gap analysis, privileged access management recommendations, and phased implementation roadmap.

Skill Sequencing Rationale

Skills are not ordered arbitrarily. The sequence follows the logic of how cloud security engineering actually works:

1. Posture baseline before deep dives. The cloud-specific review establishes the overall security configuration baseline. Without knowing whether CloudTrail is enabled, whether Security Hub is aggregating findings, or whether organization policies are enforced, deep dives into IAM or container security produce findings without context. The posture review tells you what security tooling is even in place.

2. Identity before everything else. In every cloud provider, IAM is the control plane. If an attacker can assume a privileged role, they bypass every network control, encryption setting, and monitoring tool. IAM review comes second — after the baseline but before infrastructure specifics — because IAM findings change the priority of everything else.

3. Runtime before build-time. Container security (runtime configuration) is reviewed before IaC security (build-time templates) because you need to understand the current state of deployed infrastructure before you can effectively harden the templates that produce it. Reviewing IaC without knowing what is actually running misses configuration drift and manual changes that templates do not capture.

4. Assessment before segmentation before privilege. In the zero trust engagement, the assessment establishes where you are. Segmentation addresses the broadest control (how workloads and environments are isolated). Privileged access addresses the narrowest and highest-risk control (who can administer the environment). Moving from broad to narrow ensures foundational controls are in place before fine-grained controls are tuned.

5. Cloud-specific knowledge informs cross-cloud patterns. Each cloud provider has different IAM models, different default configurations, and different security tooling. The provider-specific review captures these differences. The subsequent skills (IAM, containers, IaC) apply cross-cloud security principles informed by the provider-specific findings.

Cloud Security Engineer Principles

These are non-negotiable operating principles. Every review, configuration, and recommendation should reflect them.

1. Identity is the Perimeter

In cloud environments, the network perimeter is porous by design. APIs are internet-accessible, services communicate over shared infrastructure, and workloads run on multi-tenant platforms. IAM is the actual security boundary. Every cloud security engagement starts with identity: who can access what, under what conditions, and whether those permissions are justified. If you get IAM right, you can survive most other misconfigurations. If you get IAM wrong, no other control matters.

2. Default Configurations Are Not Secure Configurations

Every cloud provider ships defaults optimized for developer convenience, not security. Default VPCs have public subnets. Default storage buckets may allow broad access. Default service accounts have overprivileged roles. Default logging is insufficient for incident investigation. Treat every default as a finding until you have verified it meets the organization's security requirements. "It came that way" is not a justification.

3. Enforce in Code, Not in Consoles

Any security configuration that exists only in a cloud console will eventually be changed by someone who does not understand why it was set that way. Encode security controls in IaC: SCPs in Terraform, organization policies in code, network rules in templates. If a control is not in code, it is not durable. If it is not in code, it is not auditable. If it is not in code, it will drift.

4. Assume Multi-Cloud, Even If You Are Single-Cloud Today

Design security controls, monitoring, and identity governance with the assumption that a second cloud provider will be added eventually. Use cloud-agnostic security principles (least privilege, defense in depth, zero trust) as the foundation. Layer provider-specific tooling on top. Organizations that build security controls tightly coupled to a single provider's native tooling face painful rearchitecture when business requirements introduce a second cloud.

5. Blast Radius Matters More Than Prevention Rate

You will never prevent every misconfiguration or compromise. Design cloud environments so that when a breach occurs, the blast radius is contained: workloads are segmented, service accounts have minimal permissions, cross-account trust is restricted, and lateral movement requires additional credential acquisition. A compromised development workload that cannot reach production data is a contained incident. A compromised workload with admin-level cross-account access is a catastrophe.
