What This Skill Does

Produces editorial notes for a fine cut — addressing performance, pacing, tone, and sound/music placement after the structural issues identified at rough cut have been resolved.

When To Use This Skill

• The rough cut structure has been approved by the director or commissioner and the edit has moved to fine cut stage — structural problems are behind you and the notes now need to address execution
• A broadcaster or executive producer has viewed the fine cut and given broad approval but wants specific refinements before picture lock
• You are the editor and want a systematic check on pacing, tone, and music placement before presenting the cut for lock approval
• The director is preparing to lock the picture and wants one final editorial review focused on detail rather than structure

What You Need To Provide

Required: A description of the fine cut: running time, target running time, sequence order with timings, what is in each section (interviews, observational footage, narration, music), and what changed since the rough cut. Optional: The rough cut notes that were addressed (so the review can verify they were resolved); the broadcaster's notes from the rough cut viewing; music selections and their placement; narration status (recorded, placeholder, or absent); whether a temp sound mix is in place; the target lock date.

How the Assistant Approaches This

1. Confirms that rough cut structural issues have been resolved — if any structural problems remain, flags them as priority items that must be addressed before fine cut work continues
2. Assesses pacing scene by scene: identifies moments where the edit dwells too long (the viewer has understood the point but the scene continues), moments that are cut too tight (a beat is needed for the previous scene to land), and transitions that feel abrupt or unmotivated
3. Evaluates tone and register: whether the film's emotional register is consistent and intentional — scenes that are meant to feel reflective actually feel reflective, scenes that carry tension actually carry tension, and tonal shifts between scenes are earned rather than jarring
4. Reviews music and sound placement: whether music entries and exits feel natural, whether music is doing editorial work it should not be doing (papering over a weak scene rather than enhancing a strong one), and whether silence is used effectively
5. Checks interview edits for performance: whether cuts within interviews feel natural at speaking pace, whether reaction shots are earned, and whether any visible jump cuts or audio mismatches remain

Output Format

Structured notes document. Sections: Rough Cut Resolution Check (brief confirmation that structural notes were addressed), Pacing Notes (scene-level timing observations), Tone and Register Notes (emotional consistency), Music and Sound Notes (placement and effectiveness), Performance Notes (interview and observational edit quality), and Final Trim Candidates (specific moments where seconds can be recovered without losing content). Each note: Timecode/Section | Observation | Suggested Adjustment. Total length: 500–800 words. Output ends with a "Lock Readiness" assessment: whether the cut is ready for picture lock, what must be addressed first, and the estimated trim available if the cut is still over target length.

Quality Criteria

• Notes address execution, not structure — if structural problems remain, they are flagged as blockers rather than mixed in with fine-cut-level observations
• Pacing notes identify specific moments, not general impressions — "the wide shot at minute 24 holds three seconds longer than the edit needs" rather than "the middle section feels slow"
• Music notes distinguish between music that is enhancing a scene and music that is compensating for editorial weakness
• Performance notes address the quality of interview edits at the cut level — breath pacing, thought completion, reaction shot motivation
• Lock readiness assessment is a clear verdict: ready, ready with conditions, or not ready with specific blockers

Example

Input

Fine cut description: A 54-minute fine cut (target 52 minutes) of a documentary about a night-shift cleaning crew at a major museum. Rough cut was 61 minutes; the structural changes from rough cut notes have been implemented — the museum-history section moved from the opening to the middle, and the three cleaners' stories are now interwoven rather than sequential.

Sequence order and timings:

1. 0:00–6:00: Opening — the museum empties at closing time, lights go down, the cleaning crew arrives. Score enters at minute 2.
2. 6:00–18:00: First act — we meet Elena, Joseph, and Mariam during their shift. Observational footage intercut with interview fragments.
3. 18:00–26:00: The museum at night — extended observational sequence of the galleries empty, the cleaners working among the artworks. Score throughout.
4. 26:00–34:00: The museum's history section — archival footage and narration about the building's past, intercut with present-day cleaning
5. 34:00–44:00: Personal stories deepen — Elena's second job, Joseph's art practice, Mariam's family back home
6. 44:00–50:00: Dawn approaches — the shift ends, the cleaners leave, the museum reopens
7. 50:00–54:00: Closing — the daytime visitors arrive, unaware of the night shift. Final score.

Music: Composer has delivered a temp score; three cues are placed (opening, gallery sequence, closing). Two additional cues are in production.

Rough cut notes addressed: Museum history section moved to mid-film (was in opening); cleaners' stories interwoven (were sequential); opening reduced from 9 to 6 minutes.

Rough Cut Resolution Check

The three structural changes from the rough cut notes are implemented: the museum history section sits at minute 26 (previously opened the film), the cleaners' stories are interwoven throughout acts one and two, and the opening is trimmed to 6 minutes. Structure is sound — these notes address execution.

Pacing Notes

P1 — The gallery sequence (18:00–26:00) is the film's strongest visual material but runs 8 minutes without a narrative beat. The first 5 minutes are mesmerizing. By minute 23, the sequence has made its point and the viewer is waiting for the next story beat. Trim the last 2 minutes of this section — the transition into the history section will land harder if it arrives while the gallery sequence still has energy.

P2 — Elena's second-job sequence (approx. 35:00) needs one additional beat before the reveal. Currently the cut jumps from Elena at the museum to Elena at her second workplace. A single transitional shot — Elena leaving the museum, or even a black screen with ambient sound — would let the viewer register that we have moved locations.

P3 — The closing sequence (50:00–54:00) can lose 30–45 seconds. The daytime-visitors montage repeats the point after the second shot. Two shots of visitors is enough; three makes it feel like a coda rather than a punctuation mark.

Tone and Register Notes

T1 — The transition from Joseph's art practice (approx. 38:00) to Mariam's family story (approx. 40:00) is a tonal whiplash. Joseph's section ends on a wry, warm note; Mariam's opens with weight. The edit needs a breath between them — either a beat of observational footage or a longer pause on black.

Music and Sound Notes

M1 — The score entry at minute 2 is too early. The opening sequence of the museum emptying is powerful in silence — footsteps, doors closing, the building settling. Let the ambient sound carry the first 3–4 minutes. The score should enter when the cleaning crew arrives, marking the shift from the museum's public life to its hidden one.

M2 — The gallery sequence score (18:00–26:00) needs a dynamic shift. Eight minutes of the same musical texture, even beautiful texture, flattens the sequence. If the composer can introduce a second movement or a textural shift at approximately minute 22, it will re-engage the ear and support the pacing trim suggested in P1.

Performance Notes

Perf1 — Elena's interview at approximately minute 11 has a visible jump cut. Two consecutive sentences have been edited together without a cutaway — the visual jump is distracting. Cover with a reaction shot or a B-roll insert.

Final Trim Candidates

Lock Readiness

Ready with conditions. The cut is editorially sound and 2 minutes over target. The trims above bring it under target without losing material content. Address the jump cut (Perf1) and the score entry timing (M1) before presenting for lock. The tonal transition between Joseph and Mariam (T1) is the single note that will most improve the viewing experience.

Known Limitations

• Fine cut notes depend on precise descriptions of timing and placement. If the cut description is approximate or omits music and sound information, the notes on pacing and tone will be less specific.
• These notes cannot assess the quality of the image (color, exposure, framing) or the quality of the sound recording — they address editorial decisions only. A technical quality check is a separate process.
• Music notes are based on the described placement. If the temp score differs from the final composed score, music-related observations may not carry over to the locked version.
