USPTO Patent Full-Text Database: US patents and applications
Espacenet (EPO): worldwide patent coverage
Google Patents: best for keyword-based initial searches
Lens.org: open access, cross-database
PatSnap / Derwent (enterprise): analytics and citation mapping

Search Methodology

Define the invention in function terms (not your specific implementation)
Identify: core concept, key components, novel aspects
Build keyword set: synonyms, technical terms, trade names for each concept
Search CPC/IPC classifications most relevant to the technology
Review 50-100 most relevant results for relevance
Expand search based on cited references and citing patents
