User Flow Analysis
For any user journey, map:
- Entry points: how does the user arrive at this flow?
- Steps: each discrete action the user must take
- Decision points: where does the flow branch?
- Exit points: where does the user complete or abandon?
- Friction score (1-5) at each step: how much effort or confusion?
Flag: any flow requiring > 5 steps to complete the core action. Simplify first.
Usability Heuristics (Nielsen's 10)
Evaluate each heuristic on a 0-4 severity scale:
- Visibility of system status (users know what's happening)
- Match between system and real world (familiar language)
- User control and freedom (easy undo/redo)
- Consistency and standards (platform conventions)
- Error prevention (design prevents mistakes before they happen)
- Recognition over recall (visible options vs memorization)
- Flexibility and efficiency (shortcuts for expert users)
- Aesthetic and minimalist design (no irrelevant information)
- Help users recognize and recover from errors (clear error messages)
- Help and documentation (accessible when needed)
Severity: 0 = no problem, 1 = cosmetic, 2 = minor, 3 = major, 4 = catastrophe
WCAG 2.1 AA Accessibility Checklist
Perceivable
- Images have alt text
- Color is not the only means of conveying information
- Text contrast ratio ≥ 4.5:1 (normal text), 3:1 (large text)
- Videos have captions
Operable
- All functionality accessible via keyboard
- No keyboard traps
- Skip navigation link present
- Focus indicator visible
Understandable
- Language of page declared in HTML
- Error messages suggest corrections
- Forms have labels associated with inputs
Robust
- Valid HTML (parseable by assistive technologies)
- ARIA roles used correctly
Design System Component Spec
For each component, document:
- Purpose: what job does it do?
- Variants: all states (default, hover, active, disabled, error, loading)
- Props: list with type, required/optional, default value
- Accessibility: keyboard behavior, ARIA roles/labels, focus management
- Usage guidelines: when to use, when not to use, anti-patterns
