The best investors are closed before the round officially opens. They have been receiving your monthly updates for 6 months, they have been watching your progress, and when you say "we are raising," their response is "I am in."

Most founders treat fundraising as an event. The best founders treat it as an ongoing relationship-building process. The CRM and update cadence is the infrastructure that makes raises fast.

STOPPING POINT 1 — How far out are you from raising?

1. More than 6 months away — Perfect timing to build the full system from scratch
2. 3-6 months away — We can still build the CRM and get 2-3 updates out before opening
3. 1-3 months away — We need an accelerated version — build the CRM and start immediately
4. Less than 1 month or already raising — Skip the nurture phase and go straight to pipeline management

Workflow 1: Building the CRM (6+ Months Out)

The CRM Architecture

Build in Airtable, Notion, or a spreadsheet. These are the required fields:

Building the Target List from Scratch

Step 1: Start with your vertical

Go to Crunchbase, Signal (free), or PitchBook and search for:

• Investors who funded companies in your category in the last 3 years
• Filter for seed stage
• Note the check size and portfolio density

Step 2: Find operator angels

These are former employees of breakout companies who write personal checks. In 2025 the most liquid groups are ex-employees of: Stripe, Airbnb, Figma, OpenAI, Notion, Linear, Vercel, Plaid, Robinhood, Coinbase, DoorDash, Instacart.

How to find them:

• LinkedIn: "formerly at [Company] → angel investor / startup advisor"
• AngelList: search by company alumni
• Twitter/X: search "[company] alumni fund" or follow people who post about angel investing from those companies
• Lunchclub: filter for investors in your space

Step 3: Map warm intro paths

For every name on your list, identify who in your network can make a warm intro. Use LinkedIn's mutual connections feature. Even a second-degree connection who vouches for you is 10x better than cold outreach.

STOPPING POINT 3 — Do you have warm intro paths to at least 10 Tier A targets?

1. Yes, I have strong intro paths — Let's move to the nurture sequence
2. Partial — 5-9 warm paths — Let's find the gaps and fill them before you start outreach
3. No — most would be cold — We need to work on building the warm intro network before the raise
4. Not sure how to identify warm paths — I'll walk you through the intro mapping process

Workflow 2: The Pre-Raise Investor Update

The Monthly Update Format

Send this to your Tier A list once per month, starting 6 months before your raise. This is NOT a pitch — it is a relationship-building update. No ask. No pitch. Just progress.

Subject line: [Company Name] — [Month Year] Update

Format (under 200 words):

Hey [Name],

Quick monthly update on [Company]:

📈 Progress: [One specific metric or milestone that moved]
   Example: "Hit $15K MRR, up from $8K last month"
   Example: "Signed our 10th design partner — [Company Name]"
   Example: "Shipped [feature] — early feedback is strong"

🧩 Learned: [One interesting thing you discovered about the market or customer]
   Example: "Interviewed 20 more potential customers — the pattern is clear: the pain is in [X], not [Y] like we originally thought"

❓ Question: [One thing you are wrestling with that they might have a perspective on]
   Example: "We are trying to decide between [Option A] and [Option B] on pricing. Have you seen this play out in your portfolio?"

Why the question matters: It invites a response. An investor who replies to your monthly update is more engaged than one who just reads it. The reply creates a conversation thread that makes you feel known.

STOPPING POINT 4 — Do you have a list of Tier A investors to start sending updates to?

2. I have a few names but need to grow the list — Let's build it up before we start sending

Why Investors Welcome Pre-Raise Updates

Investors explicitly want to see companies develop over time before committing. A founder who sends consistent updates is demonstrating:

1. Execution — They are shipping, learning, and moving
2. Communication — They will be a good investor communication partner post-close
3. Self-awareness — They know what is working and what is not
4. Respect for the investor's time — They are not asking for anything

The response rate to warm outreach from founders who have been sending updates for 6 months is dramatically higher than cold outreach — because the investor already knows the company.

Workflow 3: Converting Updates into Raise Conversations

When you are ready to open the round, the transition from "update" to "raise" looks like this:

• They have context on your progress
• The ask is specific and concrete
• You are not cold-pitching — you are closing a relationship

STOPPING POINT 5 — Have you had any prior conversations with your target investors?

1. Yes, some have been following along for months — Great — we can write the opening email together
2. A few know me but have not been getting updates — We can still do a warm re-engagement before the ask
3. Most would be receiving their first contact from me — We need to plan a cold-to-warm strategy
4. I have met investors at events but have not followed up — Those relationships can be reactivated
