The Right vs. Wrong Way to Reach Out
Wrong way (cold LinkedIn DM):
"Hi [Name], I am building [Company] and would love to tell you about it. Would you have 30 minutes to chat?"
This gets ignored 95%+ of the time. They receive dozens of these.
Right way (warm intro + specific hook):
- Get a mutual connection to send a specific intro
- The intro mentions something specific about why THIS founder + THIS investor is a match
- You follow up with a 3-sentence email that leads with the most interesting thing
Right way (cold with extreme specificity): If you cannot get a warm intro, cold outreach works IF:
- You reference something specific they posted, built, or said
- You make the connection to your company genuinely relevant to their background
- You ask for one specific thing (a 20-minute call, not "to tell you about my company")

Why to Close Operator Angels Before VCs
The sequence matters:
- Operator angels close fast — No partnership vote, no investment committee. Often decides in 1-2 conversations.
- Their presence on your cap table moves VCs — A cap table with 5 ex-Figma product leads and 3 ex-Stripe engineers says more than any pitch deck
- They fill your round while you are in VC conversations — You arrive at the VC meeting with $400K committed, $1.1M remaining. That is a fundamentally different conversation than arriving with nothing.
The Sequencing Plan
