A missed limitation date is the profession's most expensive mistake and it is always avoidable.
For every date, record
What it is · the rule or order that creates it · the trigger event and its date · how the period is computed, including whether the trigger day counts · the resulting date · whether it can be extended, and by whom.
Show the computation. A date without its working cannot be checked, and these get checked.
Escalate early
Escalate at a comfortable margin before the date, not the day before. Limitation escalates furthest out, because the response may be to issue protectively and that takes time.
Recompute on new facts
A changed date of knowledge, a new defendant, a different cause of action — each can move limitation. Recompute rather than carrying the original forward.
Flag
Dates computed from an assumed trigger, matters with no limitation date recorded, and any date falling in a court vacation or a holiday period.
Never
Rely on a single reminder, or record a limitation date without the reasoning.
