Materials Preparation
Place the three triangles on a plain mat (neutral colour — cream or light grey). Arrange them in a row with space between each, all oriented the same way (one vertex pointing up). The mat provides a defined workspace and visual focus. Remove any other materials from the immediate area — the student's attention should be entirely on these three shapes.
Isolation check: All three triangles are the same colour (blue), same material (wood), and approximately the same size. The ONLY systematic difference is the relationship between their sides. This isolation ensures that when you name "isosceles," the student's attention is drawn to the feature that defines it — not to a colour or size difference.
Before the lesson, trace each triangle with your finger to confirm you can feel the difference in side lengths. You will guide the student to do this.
Period 1: Introduction (Naming)
Sit beside the students (not opposite — so you share their perspective on the materials).
Item 1 — Equilateral: Pick up the equilateral triangle by its knob. Slowly trace all three sides with your index finger, pausing at each corner. Say, clearly and simply:
"This is an equilateral triangle."
Place it in front of the student. Invite each student to pick it up, trace the sides, and say the name: "Equilateral triangle." Do not explain why it's called equilateral yet. The name is enough.
Item 2 — Isosceles: Pick up the isosceles triangle. Trace the sides — pause briefly on the two equal sides, then the different side. Say:
"This is an isosceles triangle."
Place it in front of the students. Each student picks it up, traces, and says: "Isosceles triangle."
Item 3 — Scalene: Pick up the scalene triangle. Trace all three sides — each one visibly different in length. Say:
"This is a scalene triangle."
Place it down. Each student picks up, traces, and says: "Scalene triangle."

Period 3: Recall (Naming by Student)
Point to or pick up one triangle at a time and ask:
"What is this triangle called?"
Start with the item the student seemed most confident with in Period 2 — give them an early success.
If the student names it correctly: Nod or smile. Move to the next triangle. No need for lavish praise — the success is its own reward.
If the student hesitates or names it incorrectly: Do NOT correct them or give the answer. Instead, return to Period 2:

After 2-3 more recognition prompts, try Period 3 again. If the student still cannot recall, end the lesson positively ("You've done excellent work with these today") and return to the lesson tomorrow. The name will consolidate overnight.
Order of recall prompts:
- Pick up the triangle the student was strongest on. "What is this called?"
- Pick up the second strongest. "And this one?"
- Pick up the most challenging. "What about this one?"

Extensions
Immediate extensions (same session or next day):

It is less suited to abstract or relational concepts ("justice," "irony," "the relationship between supply and demand") where the concept cannot be held in the hand and isolated in a material.
The "three items maximum" rule limits scope. Introducing only 2-3 items per lesson means that a classification system with 10 categories requires 3-4 separate lessons. This is pedagogically sound (it prevents overload) but time-consuming. In conventional classrooms with time pressure, teachers may be tempted to introduce more items per lesson, which reduces the method's effectiveness.
The lesson assumes a calm, focused environment. The three-period lesson requires sustained attention from a small group over 10-15 minutes. In noisy, disrupted, or overstimulated environments, the quiet precision of the lesson may be difficult to maintain.
