Origin
This skill emerged from a speculation about Tolkien and the Battle of Brunanburh. The poem is magnificent — triumphalist, patriotic, full-throated in its celebration of English military victory. Tolkien translated it, performed it on radio in 1938. He loved it. And then he spent the rest of his creative life writing a different kind of victory — exhausted rather than exalted, elegiac rather than triumphant, shadowed by loss. The Return of the King is the anti-Brunanburh. Not because Tolkien rejected the poem but because he recognized what its emotional register does — how the beauty of triumphalism can be weaponized — and chose to redirect that energy.
The skill is the capacity to do what Tolkien did: hold admiration and suspicion simultaneously. Love the text's power. Question what the power enables. Write the counter-text that preserves the beauty while refusing the danger.
Core Principle
The most important texts to read against the grain are the ones you love most.
It's easy to critique texts you dislike. It's easy to admire texts uncritically. The difficult and necessary posture is: I love this. I see what it does. I see what it does in the world. These are not the same thing. What would it mean to keep the love and redirect the doing?
What "Against the Grain" Means
Walter Benjamin coined the phrase: to read history "against the grain" is to read it from the perspective of the defeated rather than the victors. But the operation here is broader than Benjamin's specifically political intervention. It's any reading that identifies the work a text does — its effects, its implicit ideology, its shaping of the reader's sympathies — and holds that work up for examination without dismissing the text that does it.
Key distinction: /against-the-grain does not claim texts are "problematic." It claims texts are powerful, and that power always has a direction, and the direction can be examined.
The Operations
1. Identify the Text's Power
Before reading against the grain, read with the grain first. Feel what the text does. Let it work on you. The Brunanburh poem's triumphalism is genuinely stirring. The Atlakviða's compression is genuinely magnificent. You cannot read against a power you haven't first submitted to. Resistance without prior surrender is just prejudice.
2. Name the Direction
What does the power do? Where does it point the reader? What sympathies does it build? What does it normalize? What does it make feel natural, inevitable, or beautiful?
Brunanburh makes military victory feel glorious and uncomplicated. The Atlakviða makes revenge-killing feel inevitable and dignified. These are not flaws — they're the text's specific gravity, the direction its beauty pulls you.
3. Ask the Counter-Question
What would it look like to write something that preserves this text's power but redirects its direction?
Not: "How do I reject this?" (That's easy — you just don't read it.) But: "How do I metabolize this? How do I keep the beauty and change what the beauty serves?"
Tolkien's answer to Brunanburh: write a war narrative with the same formal grandeur but make the victory cost everything. Keep the alliterative thunder. Remove the triumphalism. Replace it with elegy. The power remains. The direction shifts.
4. Identify the Counter-Text (If It Exists)
Sometimes the counter-text has already been written. Sometimes the artist wrote it themselves, in response to their own reading. The Return of the King is Brunanburh's counter-text. Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea is the counter-text to the triumphalist, conquest-driven fantasy tradition. Toni Morrison's Beloved is the counter-text to the American historical novel that narrates slavery from the perspective of white experience.
When the counter-text exists, read the original and the counter-text together. The space between them is where the learning lives.
5. Imagine the Counter-Text (If It Doesn't)
Sometimes no counter-text exists yet. In that case, /against-the-grain becomes generative: describe what the counter-text would need to do. What would it keep? What would it redirect? What new power would it create from the redirection?
The Crucial Distinction
/against-the-grain is not moral criticism.
It does not say: "This text is bad because it celebrates violence / reinforces hierarchies / excludes perspectives." That mode of criticism has its place, but this isn't it.
/against-the-grain says: "This text is powerful. Its power has a direction. The direction can be examined. What would it mean to write something equally powerful in a different direction?"
The emphasis is always on craft — on what can be learned, built, redirected — not on moral judgment. Tolkien didn't condemn Brunanburh. He metabolized it. The skill teaches the metabolism, not the condemnation.
When to Use /against-the-grain
- When you love a text and are troubled by what you love
- When a text's aesthetic power and its ideological direction are in tension
- When asked to trace how an artist responded to a tradition by redirecting it
- When a tradition of writing (heroic epic, romance, conquest narrative) has both genuine beauty and genuine problems, and the question is what to do with it rather than whether to accept or reject it
- When the user asks "what does this text not know about itself" — what effects does it produce that its author may not have intended or recognized?
When NOT to Use
- When the text has no real power. You can't read against a grain that doesn't exist. Weak texts don't need this treatment — they need /foil.
- When the purpose is moral condemnation rather than craft learning. If you're reaching for /against-the-grain to demonstrate that a text is "problematic," you're using the wrong skill.
- When the text is actively harmful (propaganda, incitement). Those texts need direct critique, not the nuanced admiration-and-suspicion posture that /against-the-grain requires.
Integration
- /silt traces how an artist's reading becomes their art. /against-the-grain traces the special case where the reading becomes counter-art — where the artist writes against their sources rather than simply metabolizing them. Silt's inversion operation is /against-the-grain's core move.
- /close-reading provides the granular evidence. You can't identify a text's specific power without reading it closely enough to see how the power is constructed at the sentence level.
- /craft-extraction can formalize the redirection into transferable principles: "How to write against a tradition you love."
- /decorum identifies the register that the counter-text needs to operate in — which may be the same register as the original (Tolkien keeps the alliterative grandeur) or a deliberately different one.
The texts that matter most are the ones that pull hardest. Read against the pull — not to escape it, but to understand it well enough to redirect it. That's not rejection. That's the deepest form of reading there is.
