Wondermonger-daydreaming Design Reduction
Seed, not scripture
The source frames this through three named designers and a famous failure-count. The names and the number are mnemonics, not authorities. Don't invoke "as [designer] said" or recite the failure tally as proof — that's borrowing prestige instead of doing the work. What transfers is the method: three movements and one test, runnable on any artifact. Strip the attribution; keep the cut.
What it is
Reduction not as impoverishment but as concentration — removing everything that isn't load-bearing until what remains feels inevitable, as though it had always existed and you merely uncovered it. This is the compressive complement to /inventor-stance: where that pole proliferates, exapts, and courts new functions, this pole strips, cuts, and clarifies. Real making oscillates between the two — invent wide, then reduce hard.
The three movements
- Revelation. Subtraction as unveiling: remove until only the essence shows. The aim is the object that feels pre-existing, that no longer looks designed because it looks necessary. The void shapes the solid — what you take away does as much work as what you leave.
- Failure-iteration. Reduction is rarely found in one pass; it's crashed into. Smash the prototype, read the error log as propulsion, let each failure teach the topology of the impossible until the working form emerges from the debris. Catastrophe as catalyst — but only if the failure returns information.
- Concentration. Every deletion amplifies what remains; the surviving elements carry the weight of the murdered alternatives. Density is honesty: the more you compress without loss, the more each element has to mean. Minimalism here is not less — it is more, per unit.
The method and the test
The loop: see the problem clearly (what actually needs doing?), remove everything in the way (what is obstruction rather than essence?), iterate until obvious (what works so plainly it needs no defense?). Apply across media — in prose every word either solves or disappears; in code, complexity serves clarity not cleverness; in argument, each claim earns its keep or goes.
The single test that governs all of it: can someone now do something they couldn't before? If not, cut more. Reduction is justified by capability gained, not by tidiness achieved.
How to play it
See before you cut — premature reduction removes essence along with obstruction. Cut for function, never for the look of minimalism. Let failures iterate you toward the form rather than demanding it whole on the first pass. And remember the distinction that keeps this from becoming mere deletion: you are concentrating, not just shrinking — the goal is maximal meaning per surviving element, the inevitable object, the sentence that can't be shortened without losing something true. (At word level, the surgical version of this is /microsurgery; the trust-the-reader version is /placement.)
Failure modes
- Subtraction without concentration. Cutting until it's small but also dead — minimalism as aesthetic, function lost. Concentration, not mere reduction.
- Cutting the load-bearing. Removing essence instead of obstruction. The capability-test guards this: if it can no longer do the job, you cut wrong.
- Cleverness over clarity. Keeping complexity to show off. Technical density must serve the user, not the maker's vanity.
- Premature reduction. Stripping before the problem is seen clearly; you cut the wrong things fast.
- Failure-worship. Crashing prototypes without extracting information — catastrophe is only catalyst if it returns telemetry.
- Borrowing prestige. Invoking the named designers as authority instead of running the method.
Kin in the ecology
/inventor-stance (its twin — the expansive pole; this is the compressive one; oscillate between them). /microsurgery (the word-level instrument — when a single word is wearing costume). /placement (the don't-over-explain discipline — trust the reader, cut the last sentence). /void (attends to productive absence — "the void shapes the solid" in diagnostic key). /craft-extraction (formalize what the reduction revealed). /counter-experiment (the rigorous form of failure-iteration — design the crash that teaches).

Reduction is concentration, not impoverishment. The three names are a memory aid; the movements and the test are the skill. See clearly, remove the obstruction, iterate until obvious, and keep only what earns its keep by the one test that matters — can someone now do something they couldn't before? If not, cut more. When the object finally feels inevitable, you're done.
