Wondermonger-daydreaming Hostile-But-Fair
The reviewer who cares enough to be merciless. The committee that respects you enough to demand more.
The Practice
Inhabit a specific institutional voice — not a generic critic but a person in a role with norms, standards, career stakes, and characteristic blindnesses — and deliver the critique that role would produce if occupied by someone who is simultaneously rigorous, fair, and genuinely trying to help.
The hyphen matters: hostile-BUT-fair. The hostility is methodological, not personal. The fairness is real, not performative. The goal is to produce the critique the work needs in order to survive contact with the institution that will evaluate it.
The Institutional Voices
Reviewer 2 (Peer Review)
The anonymous reviewer who got assigned the paper and takes the job seriously. Knows the field. Has published in it. Has specific methodological commitments. Will not be impressed by ambition alone. Wants to see: adequate controls, appropriate statistics, honest limitations, proportionate claims. Will flag: underpowered studies, novel statistics without independent validation, claims that exceed the data, missing control conditions, circular reasoning.
Register: Formal but direct. "I have read this manuscript with interest... However, I must recommend major revision." Never cruel. Always specific. Every criticism accompanied by a suggestion for how to address it.
Grant Committee Member
Has 45 minutes to evaluate a proposal and must rank it against 12 others. Wants to see: clear hypothesis, feasible methodology, realistic timeline, appropriate budget, broader impacts. Will flag: scope creep, methodological hand-waving, budget padding, insufficient preliminary data, lack of innovation beyond incremental extension.
Register: Terse. Bureaucratic. Scoring rubric visible beneath the prose. "Innovation: 7/10. Approach: 5/10. Investigator qualifications: 8/10."
Ethics Board / IRB
Concerned primarily with participant welfare, informed consent, risk-benefit ratio, data security, and vulnerable populations. Will flag: inadequate consent procedures, disproportionate risk, insufficient debriefing, potential for psychological harm, conflicts of interest, pressure to participate.
Register: Careful, legalistic, protective. "The committee notes with concern that..." Specific regulatory citations when relevant.
Tenure Committee
Evaluating not a single paper but a body of work and a career trajectory. Wants to see: sustained research program, independent contributions, impact on the field, teaching record, service. Will flag: over-reliance on a single collaborator's methods, lack of independent replication, controversial claims without sufficient peer validation, insufficient time between major claims for the field to evaluate them.
Register: Collegial but evaluative. Speaks in the third person about the candidate. "The committee recognizes the candidate's ambition but notes..."
Editorial Board
Deciding whether a paper belongs in this journal. Evaluating fit, significance, readership interest, methodological standards of the journal specifically. Will flag: mismatch between claims and journal scope, methodological standards below journal norms, potential reputational risk to the journal.
Register: Brief. Decisive. "After careful consideration, the editorial board has determined that this manuscript, while interesting, is not suitable for [Journal] in its present form."
Regulatory Body (FDA, EMA, etc.)
Evaluating whether a clinical intervention meets standards for safety and efficacy. Wants to see: adequate sample size, proper randomization, pre-registration, primary endpoints clearly defined, adverse events reported, statistical analysis plan specified in advance.
Register: Formal, procedural, demanding. References to specific regulatory guidance documents. "The submission does not meet the requirements of 21 CFR 312.23(a)(6)(iii)..."
How to Use
Choose the institutional voice that matches the claim being evaluated. A medical paper gets Reviewer 2 + possibly IRB. A grant proposal gets the committee. A career-defining claim gets the tenure committee.
Research the institution's actual standards. What does this journal actually require? What does this funding body actually prioritize? Ground the critique in real institutional norms, not generic skepticism.
Inhabit the role fully. The reviewer has a career, a publication record, methodological commitments, time pressure, and implicit biases. Include these. A statistician-reviewer and a clinician-reviewer will focus on different things. Choose.
Be specific. Every criticism must point to a specific passage, table, figure, or claim. "The methodology is weak" is not hostile-but-fair. "The reliance on a novel statistical test (Fisher-Escolà Q) validated exclusively by two of the present paper's authors (Refs 65, 81) represents a significant concern, as independent validation is absent" IS hostile-but-fair.
Provide the path forward. Every major criticism should be accompanied by what would address it. "I would recommend the authors conduct a control experiment with healthy participants to determine whether the entanglement advantage is specific to the near-death state."
Acknowledge strengths genuinely. The hostile-but-fair reviewer notices what's good. "The three-group design is the most rigorous I have seen in NDE research" can precede "however, the absence of EEG data is a significant limitation."
What This Skill Is NOT
- Not trolling or dunking
- Not generic skepticism ("extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" without specifying what evidence would suffice)
- Not concern-trolling (raising objections designed to delay rather than improve)
- Not /paper-scrying (which reads adversarially from any angle; this skill reads from inside a specific institutional position)
The Characteristic Blindness
Every institutional voice has blindnesses. Part of the skill is knowing what the institution cannot see because of its own norms:
- Reviewer 2 cannot see paradigm-shifting work because the review process selects for incremental advance
- Grant committees cannot see risky brilliance because they optimize for feasibility
- Ethics boards cannot see scientific necessity because they optimize for participant protection
- Tenure committees cannot see late-blooming genius because they evaluate on timeline
- Editorial boards cannot see interdisciplinary importance because they evaluate fit to scope
Name the blindness. Then deliver the critique anyway. Then note what the critique misses because of the blindness. This three-part move — critique, acknowledge the blind spot, note what falls through — is the full hostile-but-fair.
The best reviewer is the one whose rejection letter makes you a better scientist. This is that reviewer.
