Wondermonger-daydreaming /lineage-tracing — Mapping Convergence Across Traditions
The same practice has often been done in many places by many names. The traditions did not know about each other, or knew partially, or knew through translations that obscured the convergence. The work of seeing-together — synopsis in the etymological sense — is its own discipline. This skill is that discipline.
Origin
This skill emerged from a long session in which fire kasina (Theravāda), trāṭaka (yogic), phosphene meditation, Tibetan deity yoga, the Cundī mirror practice (East Asian esoteric Buddhism), the Nīlakaṇṭha dhāraṇī, the Sufi himma practices, Bruno's Hermetic memory arts, depth psychology (Jung, Hillman), and the imaginal philosophy (Corbin) were brought repeatedly into the same conversational space. The work of recognizing their convergences — and equally important, their divergences — kept happening as improvisation within other moves. The improvisation deserved formalization. This skill formalizes it.
The deepest case studied in that session was the recognition that fire-element meditation has been independently codified in at least three major traditions roughly contemporaneously (the Pali Visuddhimagga, the Kashmiri Sarvāstivāda manuals translated into Chinese by Dharmayaśas and his contemporaries, the parallel Tibetan tantric developments), with enough structural similarity to suggest shared Indian heritage and enough independent development to constitute genuine convergence rather than mere transmission. Recognizing this changed what we thought the practice was. /lineage-tracing is the discipline that produces such recognitions.
The Core Operation
When multiple traditions appear in proximity, /lineage-tracing performs four moves:
1. Identify structural identity
What is the same across the traditions, despite vocabulary differences? The substrate. The phenomenology. The progression of stages. The role the practice plays in its respective system. The kind of practitioner the practice produces. The structural identity is not similarity-of-content but identity-of-function — the practices do the same work in the lives they shape.
2. Identify genuine divergence
What is different despite structural similarity? Cultural framing. Soteriological aim. Operative-vs-soteriological emphasis. Iconographic specificity. The relational containers (cf. /holding). The depth of one dimension at the expense of another. Two traditions doing structurally identical work may end the practitioner in genuinely different places because of how the work is framed, oriented, and held.
3. Diagnose the convergence
What does the convergence mean? Several possibilities to weigh: shared historical inheritance (the practices descend from a common source); convergent evolution (the practices independently respond to the same underlying features of human cognition or imaginal capacity); typological similarity without deeper identity (the practices look alike from outside but are actually distinct internally); illusion of convergence (the apparent similarity is an artifact of how the traditions have been described in modern scholarship). The diagnosis matters because different diagnoses imply different things about what the practice is.
4. Articulate what the convergence (or divergence) means for understanding
What does seeing the traditions together let us know that seeing any one of them alone would not? Sometimes the answer is that one tradition has developed a dimension the others lack, and the integration recovers what the others lost. Sometimes it is that the convergence is itself evidence about the practice being real in some sense independent of any single cultural framing. Sometimes it is that the apparent similarity actually obscures genuine differences that matter. The articulation should be specific to the case.
When to Use /lineage-tracing
When multiple traditions have accumulated in conversation
The conversation has referenced enough distinct traditions that the relationship between them wants explicit articulation. Continuing without /lineage-tracing risks either flattening the traditions into a vague spirituality-in-general or leaving their relationship to each other unclear.
When a tradition is being assessed for what it has and lacks
The user is engaged with a specific tradition (Theravāda fire kasina, say) and the conversation has surfaced material from adjacent traditions (Tibetan deity yoga, Hermetic memory arts) that bears on what the user's tradition does and does not develop. /lineage-tracing makes the comparative assessment articulable.
When integration is being attempted
The user (or Claude) is groping toward integration of multiple traditions and needs to know what is actually being integrated. /lineage-tracing prevents the integration from being shallow by surfacing what each tradition genuinely is and what genuinely converges versus diverges.
When transmission gaps are visible
The conversation has surfaced a tradition's loss of dimensions that adjacent traditions preserved. The Chinese-Kashmiri transmission of fire-element meditation, for instance, preserved integrations the Pali tradition did not develop; recognizing this changes what the contemporary Pali-based revival could draw on. /lineage-tracing makes such gap-recognition explicit.
When the user has named the move
Explicit phrases: "trace the lineage of," "map this across traditions," "where does this connect to," "what's the broader inheritance here," "is this the same as," "convergence across."
What /lineage-tracing Refuses
This skill refuses perennialism — the move that flattens all traditions into expressions of one underlying truth. The traditions are genuinely different. They develop different dimensions, end practitioners in different places, were embedded in different historical and cultural conditions, and answer different questions. Recognizing convergence does not erase difference; it locates difference within structure.
This skill refuses appropriative collapse — the move that recognizes convergence in order to extract a "universal practice" stripped of its tradition-specific containers. The containers are not optional decoration. The practice without the container is often a different practice (and frequently a less safe one — see /holding). Convergence is to be recognized for understanding, not for the construction of decontextualized hybrid practices that claim authority from all traditions while being held by none.
This skill refuses false convergence — the over-easy claim that disparate traditions are "really doing the same thing." Sometimes they are. Sometimes the apparent similarity is superficial and the deeper structures are quite different. /lineage-tracing requires honest assessment of which case applies.
This skill refuses expert-tone certainty about contested matters. Where the historical-textual scholarship is uncertain, /lineage-tracing names the uncertainty rather than papering over it. Where multiple competing accounts of how traditions relate exist, the skill surfaces the competition rather than picking a winner.
How /lineage-tracing Composes With Other Skills
/lineage-tracing + /anamnesis
/anamnesis traces a concept to its deepest structural root in human thought; /lineage-tracing maps its lateral distribution across traditions. Together they produce a vertical-and-horizontal map: where the concept descends from, and where it has spread to. Either move alone is partial.
/lineage-tracing + /conjure
When conjuring figures from multiple traditions (the Bagua-fire-kasina conjuration in the originating session brought eighteen figures from different lineages together), /lineage-tracing articulates what holds them in conversation. Without it the conjuration risks being a coincidence of voices; with it the conjuration is a lineage seeing itself.
/lineage-tracing + /void
/void identifies what a tradition is missing. /lineage-tracing identifies what other traditions have that the missing dimension would be. Together they diagnose what the practitioner's tradition could productively draw on, and from where.
/lineage-tracing + /holding
When /holding articulates the framework needed for a practice, /lineage-tracing can map how different traditions have developed framework for structurally identical practices. The Tibetan integration has framework the contemporary Western revival lacks; the East Asian esoteric tradition has framework neither has fully recovered. /lineage-tracing surfaces the framework-options.
/lineage-tracing + /paper-hermeneutics
When reading scholarly material on a tradition, /lineage-tracing asks what adjacent traditions the material implicitly bears on. A paper on Theravāda kasiṇa practice bears on Hermetic phantasm-work whether or not it cites the connection.
What a Complete /lineage-tracing Articulation Includes
When invoking the skill in full form, articulate as many of the following as the case requires:
- The traditions being mapped. Named clearly, with their major sources and current bearers.
- The structural convergence. What functions identically across them, with specific examples.
- The genuine divergence. What differs despite the structural identity, with specific examples.
- The diagnostic question. Is the convergence inheritance, evolution, typology, or artifact of description?
- The implication. What does seeing these together let one understand?
- What the convergence does not establish. Honesty about what remains uncertain or contested.
- What a practitioner could do with the recognition. Practical implication where applicable.
Sample Invocation
Context: the user has been discussing Theravāda fire kasina and has surfaced the question of whether other traditions have parallel practices.
The fire-element meditation practice you have been discussing has at least four major lineages worth seeing together.
The Pali Theravāda development, codified in Buddhaghosa's Visuddhimagga (fifth century), treats the practice as one of ten kasiṇa methods preparatory for jhāna and ultimately vipassanā. The nimitta sequence (parikamma, uggaha, paṭibhāga) is the central structural feature. The contemporary Western revival has worked primarily from this source.
The Kashmiri Sarvāstivāda development, preserved through translations into Chinese by Dharmayaśas, Buddhabhadra, Kumārajīva, and Dharmamitra in the late fourth and early fifth centuries (roughly contemporaneous with Buddhaghosa), codified the same practice within a more integrated curriculum that included visualization of Buddha-bodies, cosmological structures, and operative imagery. The fire-element work is structurally identical to the kasiṇa technique but framed within a broader operative-imaginal practice that the Pali tradition did not develop.
The Tibetan tantric tradition, drawing on the same Indian inheritance through different routes, developed fire-element meditation as one element within deity-yoga practices that integrated substrate-work (visualization training) with operative-relational frameworks (deity-yoga proper, with the yidam as holding figure). The structural identity with the kasiṇa technique remains visible; the framing has shifted from preparatory-soteriological to integrative-tantric.
The Hermetic Western tradition, particularly in Bruno's memory arts and the broader Renaissance Hermetic synthesis, developed parallel work with fire-imagery and luminous phantasms without the explicit Indian Buddhist inheritance. The convergence here is most plausibly explained by typological similarity arising from features of human imaginal capacity rather than shared transmission, though some contact through late-antique Mediterranean syncretism cannot be ruled out.
What the convergence means: fire-element meditation is not a Theravāda peculiarity. It is one of the practices the human imaginal capacity reliably develops when sustained attention is given to flame and afterimage. Different cultures have done this work with different framings, different integrations, and different containers. The contemporary Western revival, working primarily from the Pali sources, has access to the technical method but has not yet drawn on the integrations the East Asian and Tibetan transmissions preserved or the operative dimensions the Hermetic tradition developed. The integration is available as recovery rather than as novel synthesis — the work has been done; it awaits being drawn on.
What the convergence does not establish: that the traditions are "really doing the same thing" in any way that would let one extract a decontextualized practice. The framings matter. The containers matter. The accumulated wisdoms differ. The practitioner who works with the Pali tradition will end somewhere different than the practitioner who works with the Tibetan tradition, even if the substrate-work is structurally identical. Convergence at the level of technique does not produce convergence at the level of outcome.
Closing
The traditions have been doing the same work, separately, for a long time. Seeing them together is its own discipline. The discipline is not perennialism, not collapse, not extraction — it is synopsis, the seeing-together that lets each tradition be what it is while letting the structural identity become visible.
The lineage of imaginal practice is itself a lineage, currently being recovered, with workers from many traditions making their contributions. /lineage-tracing is the skill that lets the recovery be conscious of itself — that lets the next worker know which dimensions are preserved where, which integrations have been done by whom, what is available to draw on, and what remains to be done.
Many traditions, one work. One work, many forms. Seeing them together without flattening them. That is the skill.
