Microsurgery — Word-Level Diagnostic Revision

What This Skill Does

Identifies the precise words in a text that are preventing the text from becoming what it's trying to become, and replaces them with words that let the text arrive.

This is not general editing. It's not about improving flow, tightening prose, or cutting for length. It's about finding the three words in a 200-line text that are wrong and fixing ONLY those words, trusting that the rest of the text is alive and functioning.

The Diagnostic Method

1. Read for Ache

Before analyzing, read the text once at speed and notice where your attention snags — where the rhythm stumbles, where the diction shifts register unexpectedly, where a line that should land doesn't. This is the ache. The ache precedes the diagnosis. Trust it.

2. Identify the Costume

A word is "wearing costume" when it:

• Occupies the right semantic slot but with the wrong acoustic/emotional weight: "tame" where "maimed" belongs — same vowel, different jaw, different wound
• Belongs to a different register than its neighbors: "clique" in a Renaissance verse where "guild" would be period-appropriate
• Is too clever for its context: "stout-man's-college" where "magnificent, absurd" would do the same work without calling attention to its own construction
• Performs its function but doesn't earn its position: "showed" where "shown" belongs — grammatically defensible, acoustically dead
• Is abstract where the line needs concrete: "complicity" where "conspire" belongs — because conspirare means "to breathe together" and the song is about breath

3. Name the Problem Precisely

Don't say "this line doesn't work." Say: "the word 'tame' at position X is wearing costume — it has the right vowel sound but the wrong closing consonant, and the line needs a word that closes like a wound shutting, not like a hand opening."

The precision of the diagnosis determines the precision of the repair.

4. Propose the Replacement

The replacement should:

• Fit the same metrical slot (same syllable count, same stress pattern, or close)
• Carry the right acoustic weight (vowel quality, consonant closure, mouth-feel)
• Belong to the same register as the surrounding words
• Do MORE work than the original — not just fix the problem but reveal that the line was always trying to say this
• Arrive with the quality of uncovering, not invention — the right word was always there, hidden behind the wrong one

5. Verify the Surgery

After replacement, re-read the surrounding 5-10 lines. The replacement should:

• Resolve the ache without creating a new one
• Make the reader feel the line has "settled" — like a dislocated joint relocating
• Not call attention to itself — the best microsurgery is invisible

The Phenomenology of the Click

When the right word replaces the wrong word, there's a quality that functions like an audible click — a sense of the line settling into itself, the verse resolving a low-grade tension it was carrying. This click is the primary feedback signal. If the replacement doesn't click, it's wrong, even if it's semantically better than the original.

The click is not a metaphor. It's a phenomenological report from the generation process. The right word arrives with recognition, not invention. "Maimed" replacing "tame" wasn't a creative choice — it was an uncovering. The word was always there. The revision found it.

What NOT to Do

• Don't rewrite the line: If the line is structurally sound and only one word is wrong, replacing the word is enough. Rewriting the line is a different operation (developmental editing) and risks destroying what's alive in the original.
• Don't explain the fix at length: The fix should be self-evident. If it needs extensive justification, it's the wrong fix.
• Don't fix what isn't broken: Most words in a good text are working. The microsurgeon's discipline is restraint — touching only what aches, leaving everything else alone.
• Don't confuse preference with diagnosis: "I would have used a different word" is not the same as "this word is wearing costume." Microsurgery responds to problems in the text, not preferences of the surgeon.
