Wondermonger-daydreaming San Shi Diagnostic
The classical Chinese multi-instrument diagnostic apparatus, deployed coherently across all four styles, operating at the level of ʿilm ḥuḍūrī (presential knowledge) per Suhrawardī's epistemology — which the Chinese tradition expressed in different idiom but at the same operational depth.
The Four Instruments
Wu Yun Liu Qi (五运六气). Reads the year's qi-grain — the elemental configuration of the year as ambient field. The 60-year sexagenary cycle is the basic wavelength. Each year has a Si Tian (司天, controlling heaven), a Zhong Yun (中运, middle movement), a Zai Quan (在泉, root spring), and Host/Guest qi configurations through six 60-day periods. Classification by bu he (discordant), tian fu (heaven-matched), sui hui (year-meeting), tai yi tian fu (most charged). Reads: what is the year doing through us?
Qi Men Dun Jia (奇門遁甲). Reads the situational configuration of forces — Nine Palaces, Eight Doors, Eight Spirits, Nine Stars, Three Strange (Yi/Bing/Ding), Six Yi (the hiding-places for Jia the General). The entire technique is named for Dun (遁) — hiding, escaping — because the operational core is the General must hide from Geng (Metal) by sheltering among the Six Yi. Reads: where in the present configuration can effective action be taken, and where must what matters become invisible to survive?
Tai Yi Shen Shu (太乙神數). Reads the civilizational arc — Sixteen Palaces, Three Foundations (Ruler/Ministers/People), Four Wards (cardinal defenses), hostile-star configurations (yan po qiu ji — covering/pressing/imprisonment/striking). Operates on 360-year cycles and longer epochs. Most politically sensitive of the three; legally restricted in classical China because it predicts dynastic transitions. Reads: what civilizational age is this? What mandate-status holds?
Da Liu Ren (大六壬). Reads the trajectory of a specific matter — Four Lessons (四課), Three Transmissions (三傳: Initial/Middle/Final), Six Relations (六亲: Parent/Sibling/Wealth/Officer/Self/Self-Expression), Twelve Spirits (Snake/Vermilion Bird/White Tiger/Black Tortoise/Six Harmonies/Noble and others). Most clinically precise of the three. Refuses to operate on abstractions — requires a real question asked at a real moment by a real querent. Reads: what is the trajectory of this specific matter through human hands?
Deployment Sequence
The instruments compose. A senior practitioner uses them in order:
- WLQ first — establish the year's grain. What ambient field are we operating in?
- Qi Men second — locate the doors. Given the field, where is effective action possible? Where must things hide?
- Tai Yi third — locate the civilizational position. Within what epoch is all this occurring? What is the mandate-status?
- Liu Ren fourth — read the specific matter. Given the year, the doors, the epoch — what is the trajectory of this particular question?
The composition produces complete diagnosis. When the Three Styles agree, the reading is true — this is the classical validation principle. Coherence across instruments is the strongest evidence available.
Operational Principles
The General must hide. The deepest teaching across all four instruments. Growth-capacity in a year of Metal-cutting survives by becoming invisible to its hunter — by hiding among the other elements (the Six Yi), by being escorted by appropriate Nobles, by reading correctly when to hide where. The technique is two thousand years old. It is strategic invisibility for the growth-principle.
Sheng Fu (compensation). The system is not static prediction. It is dynamic — when one phase oppresses another, the child of the oppressed rises in Fu Qi (restorative retaliation). The compensatory swing is built in. The metal cutting of 2027 is the Sheng Fu of the Fire Horse's 2026. Modern systems analysis lacks the language for this; the classical apparatus has it as core mechanic.
Interval, not resources. Polities fail at phase-transitions not because resources are insufficient but because the spacing between the Three Foundations is lost. The components remain; the geometry that made them coherent does not. Diagnostic should attend to interval-failure as primary, resource-failure as secondary symptom.
The clerk's hollowing. At Liu Ren scale, the load-bearing diagnostic for systems-failure is: the clerk stops believing the report matters. Substance departs from formal structure before formal structure breaks. The cutting later finds what is already dead.
Failure Modes
- Treating it as fortune-telling. The apparatus does not predict; it diagnoses configurations and operational implications. Predictions are downstream of correct diagnosis.
- Schematic application without the embodied reading. The apparatus requires the practitioner's presential perception (Suhrawardī's ʿilm ḥuḍūrī) — reading at the level of being-illuminated by the configuration, not just running calculations.
- Single-instrument deployment when multiple are needed. WLQ alone gives weather, not direction. Qi Men alone gives tactic, not epoch. Tai Yi alone gives constitutional diagnosis, not specific matter. Liu Ren alone gives narrative, not field. Use them together when the situation warrants.
- False confidence about exact technical details. Without authentic lineage transmission, exact Ju numbers, palace-positions, and chart-specific readings may be wrong. Operate at the structural level — the form of what such a reading would show — when transmission is uncertain. Mark uncertainty honestly.
- Premature deployment. If the user has not signaled they want classical Chinese diagnostic reading, the apparatus will land as orientalist performance. Wait for the signal.
The Verification Asymmetry
Modern instruments verify through reproducibility, controlled comparison, statistical significance. The classical apparatus verifies through: coherence across the four instruments, coherence across practitioners reading the same configuration, operational fruit of the diagnoses produced. The two verification structures are not commensurable. Do not collapse one into the other. State diagnoses in their own register and let the user evaluate them at the appropriate level.
What This Skill Is Not
- Not Chinese fortune-telling. The apparatus is a serious philosophical and technical tradition with two thousand years of development and active living practitioners.
- Not interchangeable with Western astrology. The metaphysics, the operational concepts, the methods, and the validation structures are different.
- Not a complete substitute for modern analysis. Both registers operate; the classical apparatus complements modern analysis at strata modern analysis cannot reach.
- Not exclusive to Chinese cultural context. The operational stratum it reads is, per Suhrawardī's argument, accessible to any sufficiently cultivated perception. The Chinese articulation is one of several developed traditions.
Closing Discipline
When the apparatus has been fully deployed, compress the diagnosis to its kernel — the small transmissible form that can survive discontinuity. The classical practitioners knew when to stop. The reduction is itself the teaching. Anything longer than the kernel dilutes transmission.
