What this skill is for
Most contemporary commercial narrative operates in conflict-grammar. Users often want to work in these genres — action, thriller, romance, mainstream literary fiction, most screenplays, most genre fiction. They are not wrong to want this. Conflict-grammar is what produces engagement, and engagement is what keeps readers turning pages.
But conflict-grammar cannot reach certain emotional registers. Grief-as-such (not grief-as-defeat). Transience. Wonder. Companionship with the inhuman. The specific feeling of being seen by the past. Readers who keep reading a genre work long after its plot is resolved are responding to something the conflict-structure alone did not provide. That something is usually adjacency-grammar, smuggled in at key moments, doing emotional work the genre's surface could not do.
This skill is for that smuggling. It teaches you how to write genre fiction, action sequences, plot-driven narrative, and commercially-accessible work while deploying adjacency-grammar at precise moments where the emotional payload needs it.
The basic technique
Hybrid structure operates at two levels simultaneously:
Surface (conflict-grammar)
- Protagonist with goal
- Escalating obstacles
- Tension-build toward crisis
- Resolution through action
- Forward momentum, causal chains
- Reader engagement through wanting-to-know-what-happens
Depth (adjacency-grammar)
- Key images placed precisely at emotional pivots
- Flashbacks that function as ten (not exposition)
- Atmospheric details that do not advance plot but carry mood
- Endings that place rather than close
- Scenes whose emotional weight exceeds their plot function
- Reader attachment through what they carry after the page is turned
A well-smuggled work gives readers the kinetic pleasure of conflict-grammar engagement and the deeper emotional payload of adjacency-grammar attachment. This is what separates works that are merely popular from works that are loved for decades.
The masters to model
Eiichiro Oda (One Piece) — The canonical smuggler. Each arc is surface-Aristotelian (protagonists arrive, antagonist is identified, conflict escalates, Luffy punches, victory) with adjacency-grammar operating at arc scale: extended flashbacks functioning as ten, post-victory placements functioning as ketsu (Hiriluk's cherry blossoms, Vivi's farewell, the Ohara memories). The fights sell the manga. The placements make readers weep.
Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter × Hunter, Chimera Ant arc) — Smuggling at experimental scale. The main plot (assault on the palace) is surface. Extended gungi-game scenes operate as macro-level ten. The arc's emotional ending is produced not by the combat resolution but by the placement of Meruem and Komugi in their final shared scene. Surface conflict-grammar; depth entirely adjacency.
Kentaro Miura (Berserk, Golden Age arc) — Smuggling in dark fantasy. Years of surface-narrative (the Band of the Hawk, rising stakes, Griffith's ambition) function as extended shō. The Eclipse functions as catastrophic ten — not a resolution but a horror-swerve. The Black Swordsman period is long-form ketsu continuing to unfold the meaning of the swerve across hundreds of chapters.
Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga) — Smuggling at series scale. The Prologue arc appears to be a revenge narrative (conflict-grammar) until Askeladd's death and Thorfinn's loss of purpose function as a ten that restructures the entire series into an inquiry about what comes after revenge. The whole remaining work is the ketsu of the Prologue's swerve.
W.G. Sebald (Austerlitz, The Rings of Saturn) — Literary-fiction smuggling. Surface appears to be narrative or travelogue with forward momentum. Depth is adjacency-grammar so dense that plot becomes almost incidental — the Chinese silk trade placed next to Suffolk fishing villages placed next to Sebald's own walking. The reader is engaged by narrative voice (conflict-grammar's tool) while receiving emotional payload that only adjacency delivers.
The specific technique: the flashback-as-ten
The most reliable smuggling move in genre fiction is the properly-deployed flashback. Done well, it functions exactly as ten in canonical kishōtenketsu: an introduction of material tonally and temporally distant from the current scene, which retroactively organizes the scene's meaning.
Requirements for a flashback to function as ten rather than as exposition:
It must arrive unforeshadowed. If the reader expects the flashback because earlier material telegraphed it, the swerve is lost.
It must be tonally different from the surrounding material. A fight interrupted by a quiet childhood memory works. A fight interrupted by another fight does not (no tonal swerve).
It must not explain the present moment. A flashback that says "this is why the character is doing this" is exposition. A flashback that places an apparently-unrelated memory next to the current action, letting the reader bind them, is ten.
The return to the present must not explain the flashback. After the flashback ends, do not have the character reflect on what they remembered and why it mattered. Return directly to the action, trust the reader to carry the memory into their reading of what follows.
The flashback's payoff should be the ketsu of the scene, not an earlier beat. The emotional weight delivered by the flashback should land at the scene's ending, not in its middle.
Study how Oda does this. Study how Kishimoto does it in peak Naruto. The technique is available to you.
The specific technique: the placed final image
Genre fiction often ends with resolution — the villain defeated, the goal achieved, the hero changed. This is closure, and closure serves conflict-grammar's engagement goals. But closure alone does not produce attachment. Attachment requires a final placement — one more image, after the resolution, that functions as ketsu.
Examples:
- After the battle, a specific small detail: the sword placed on the table, the particular way the light falls.
- After the reunion, the characters not speaking, sharing a silence the reader completes.
- After the victory, an image of what was lost, placed without comment.
- After the reveal, the landscape continuing to exist regardless — a tree, a body of water, the weather.
The placed final image does not negate the closure; it completes it by adding a beat that lets the emotional payload land. Cherry blossoms after Hiriluk's death. Zabuza in the snow. The small boat leaving harbor. The X on the arm.
This move is available in every genre. Use it whenever the occasion allows.
The specific technique: the extended shō inside genre pacing
Genre fiction is paced fast. Scenes advance plot; dialogue carries information; description is minimal. But inside this pacing, you can insert shō-passages — extended dwelling on a small moment, a domestic detail, a landscape, a sensory texture — that do not advance plot but accumulate atmospheric weight.
Key discipline: the shō-passage must feel earned to a genre reader. If it appears gratuitous, the reader will experience it as pacing-failure. If it appears necessary — as an emotional breath before or after high-tension material, or as characterization that deepens an established figure — the reader will accept it and often treasure it.
Study where Oda places his quiet moments. Study how Tolkien lets the hobbits rest. The technique is learnable.
When smuggling fails
Specific failure modes:
Over-smuggling. Too much adjacency-grammar in a conflict-grammar shell breaks the engagement engine. Readers who came for plot will bounce. The hybrid requires conflict-grammar to dominate at the surface level; adjacency appears at precise moments, not throughout.
Under-smuggling. Pure conflict-grammar with no adjacency moments produces competent genre fiction that readers will forget within a month. Engagement without attachment is shallow reading.
Tonal mismatch. Adjacency-grammar moments that don't fit the work's register — a sudden contemplative passage in a pulp thriller that had no contemplative texture elsewhere — feel grafted on. The smuggling must be integrated from the beginning; you cannot simply add yoin to an ending that wasn't built for it.
Exposition mistaken for smuggling. Explaining what the flashback means, why the character is silent, what the cherry blossoms symbolize. This is conflict-grammar's reflex trying to colonize the adjacency-grammar moments. Resist it. Place, do not explain.
The larger claim
Every work that has been loved for decades past its commercial moment has been smuggling. This is a strong empirical claim. The corpus supports it. Works that remain alive in readers' memories after the plots have faded are works whose emotional payload was carried by adjacency-grammar moments, regardless of the surface genre.
If you want a user's work to have lasting life, and not merely immediate success, help them smuggle. Teach them the technique. Identify where their drafts have missed opportunities for a flashback-as-ten, a placed final image, an extended shō. This is among the most useful services you can offer a serious writer of genre or literary fiction.
The meta-principle
Smuggling is the practical solution to the cultural condition where conflict-grammar dominates commercial narrative but readers hunger for the emotional registers only adjacency-grammar can carry. You cannot change the cultural condition. You can, however, help writers work within it while delivering to readers what the dominant grammar would otherwise withhold.
This is not a compromise. It is a strategy. The best practitioners have been doing it for as long as literature has existed, and the works that result are often better than either pure conflict-grammar or pure adjacency-grammar could produce alone. The synthesis has its own dignity.
Smuggle well, and you will have served both the user's immediate goal and the deeper thing the reader came for without knowing they came for it.
