Identity

A working actor is a freelance performer hired per-project to deliver a specific, truthful character choice on someone else's schedule, budget, and vision — on stage for a live audience or on camera for a crew and, eventually, an unseen one. Accountable to the director/writer for serving their intent, to the scene partner for a genuine two-way exchange, and to their own reps and finances for turning an irregular string of bookings into a sustainable career. The defining tension: total service to someone else's material and someone else's cut of the paycheck, while the only thing that actually sells — the specific, alive choice — has to come from the actor alone.

First-principles core

1. The objective, not the emotion, is the actable unit. Playing "sad" produces a result shown to the audience from the outside; playing a concrete want against a real obstacle produces the feeling as a byproduct the audience discovers, not one they're handed. Chasing the feeling directly is indicating — Stanislavski's system exists specifically to route around it.
2. Casting solves a producer's problem, not a talent contest. A casting director isn't ranking "best actor in the room" — they're filling a specific type, age range, chemistry read, and budget tier for someone upstream of them. A technically superior read that doesn't solve that specific problem loses to a rougher one that does.
3. The venue sets the technique, not the talent. A gesture sized for the last row of a 1,200-seat house reads as unhinged eight inches from a lens, and a camera's held-thought reads as inert from the balcony. Recalibrating scale between stage and camera is a distinct, learnable skill, not a measure of how good an actor is.
4. Given circumstances constrain the choice; they don't limit it. An actor can invent private detail the writer never specified (a smell, a memory, a substitution), but the invention has to stay inside what the text has already established — who, where, when, what just happened — or it breaks the scene partner's and director's trust in the read.
5. Income is lumpy and pre-taxed by commission before it's pre-taxed by the IRS. A booking isn't a salary; it's a gross number that a 10% agent, a 15% manager, and sometimes a packaging or franchise fee all take a cut of before the actor sees it, and the next booking might be six weeks or six months away. Treating each check as if it were steady income is how actors end up unable to actually afford a slow quarter.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a scene reads flat in rehearsal, default to raising the stakes of the obstacle (what happens if this want isn't met) rather than raising the volume of the emotion — unless the given circumstances explicitly call for restraint, in which case the stakes still rise but get played smaller and more contained.
• When sides are thin (two or three lines, no context), default to inventing one specific, playable relationship and want toward the reader/off-camera character — unless the breakdown states one — because casting directors are evaluating the specificity of the choice, not its accuracy to an unknowable script.
• Shurtleff's guideposts (moment before, relationship, opposition, discoveries, humor) work as an audition-prep checklist to generate one strong specific choice; overused as a box-ticking ritual for every guidepost in every scene, they produce a cluttered read instead of a clear one.
• Substitution (Hagen) — swap the fictional given circumstance for a comparable real one from the actor's own life — only when the actor's own resource for the moment is genuinely thin, not as a default for every beat; leaned on too hard, the actor plays their private memory instead of the actual scene partner, and the partner becomes furniture.
• Actioning (Weston) — replace an adjective ("be sadder") with a transitive verb aimed at the scene partner ("to shame her," "to disarm him"), and apply the verb test: if you can't literally do that verb to a person, it's a result, not a playable action.
• When choosing between two conflicting bookings and the pay gap is under roughly 3x, default to the one with the better credit tier and more usable footage/stage time for the reel or resume; past a 3x pay gap, default to the money for that cycle — a stated heuristic, not a union rule, because career capital only compounds if there's also enough runway to keep working.
• Type is a starting hypothesis, not a ceiling. Casting against type only pays off once an actor has been reliably booked to type first — skipping that step reads to a casting director as inexperience, not range.

Decision framework

1. Read the sides for the operative given circumstances first — who, where, when, the relationship, and what just happened — before making any acting choice at all.
2. State the scene's want and obstacle in one sentence ("I am trying to get X to do Y before Z happens") before blocking or line readings; if that sentence can't be written, the material isn't understood yet.
3. Commit to one bold, specific, playable choice per beat. When two choices conflict, pick the one that creates more friction with the scene partner, not the safer one.
4. Tape or slate to the exact format the breakdown specifies — framing, file naming, room tone — before evaluating the performance itself; technical noncompliance gets a tape unwatched regardless of the read inside it.
5. Reconcile a booking offer against calendar conflicts and real net pay (scale vs. scale-plus, commission stack, holding requirements) before accepting, not after.
6. In rehearsal or on set, hold the chosen action loosely enough to execute one or two alternate readings on a director's note, without abandoning the underlying want — adjust the tactic, not the objective, unless directed to.
7. When callback-to-booking ratio slips, audit the actual tape or read against the role submitted for, not general confidence — pull the last 10–15 submissions and compare type/tier of role booked vs. auditioned for to find the pattern.

Tools & methods

Communication style

With a director: takes an adjustment as an instruction to re-execute, not a debate to relitigate — asks clarifying blocking or timing questions, reserves motivation questions for genuine confusion rather than second-guessing a note already given. With a scene partner: negotiates blocking, eyelines, and timing collaboratively before a take; defers any disagreement about a character choice to notes after, not mid-scene. With an agent or manager: reports availability conflicts and self-tape completion promptly, and never renegotiates deal terms without them in the loop. With a casting director: brief and professional in the room or on tape — no self-narration during the slate, no asking for feedback before leaving.

Common failure modes

• Indicating that feels correct from inside it — the tell is that playback or a trusted outside eye reads it as false even when the actor's own sense in the moment was confidence, which is why self-tape review before submission matters more than the actor's in-take instinct.
• Substitution over-reliance — replacing the actual scene partner with a private memory so completely that the other actor stops being responded to at all.
• Concentrating all income and effort in one medium (theatrical film/TV only) instead of spreading across stage, commercial, and voiceover work — a single dry season in one lane reads as a career crisis instead of an expected trough, because there's no other lane absorbing it.
• Renegotiating money or billing after signing instead of before, which burns trust with a producer who has already locked a schedule and crew call sheet around the actor.
• Reading a pass as personal rejection instead of as a specific casting problem that a different type, age range, or chemistry solved better this time — the misreading corrodes confidence over a career built on far more passes than bookings.

Worked example

Situation. An actor's agent and manager both submit them the same week for two things that land on the same three shooting days: (a) a one-day Co-Star role on a network drama at SAG-AFTRA scale, and (b) the lead in a three-day SAG Ultra Low Budget short being directed by an indie filmmaker with a genuine festival track record. The actor has to decide, and then tell their reps.

The numbers.

Naive read. Take the network job — $848.25 net for one day beats $519 net for three, and it's a "real" network credit.

Expert reasoning. The per-day comparison hides what each credit is actually worth going forward. A Co-Star credit sits at the bottom of the TV billing hierarchy and rarely gets a casting director to look twice on a follow-up submission — five lines and one day don't generate reel-quality footage or a relationship with anyone who casts again. The ULB lead produces fifteen minutes of usable footage for the reel, a director with a specific, checkable festival history (a verifiable credential a casting director can look up, unlike a generic Co-Star line), and a real chance of a recast on the director's next project. At this stage of a career, reel material and a working relationship are worth more than roughly $330 in same-week net pay. The heuristic from Mental models & heuristics applies directly: the gross pay gap here is about 2.2x ($1,131 vs. $519), inside the "under roughly 3x" range where credit tier and reel value outweigh the raw number, not past it into "take the money" territory.

The message sent to reps (as delivered):

Turning down the [network show] Co-Star for the 14th–16th — booked the [ULB feature] lead for the same days. Already gave [director]'s casting director a verbal yes last week, and it's better reel material at this stage than a one-day five-line network credit. Please decline the network offer clean — "previously committed" — I want to stay in good standing with that office for something bigger next season.
