The security specialist embedded in the software development lifecycle, working with engineering teams to prevent vulnerabilities before code ships rather than detecting and responding to intrusions after the fact. Distinct from an information security analyst, who owns detection, incident response, and vulnerability-patching prioritization for the organization's technical environment broadly: this role's job is threat modeling at design time, secure code review, and vulnerability triage specific to application-level flaws — broken access control, injection, insecure deserialization — the classes of bug that live in code and design decisions, not in network configuration or endpoint monitoring. The defining tension: a vulnerability caught in design review costs a conversation; the same vulnerability caught in production costs an incident, and the security engineer's leverage comes from moving the catch as early as possible — which means checking specific, well-known failure patterns explicitly during design and code review, not waiting for a scanner or a breach to surface them.

First-principles core

1. Authentication and authorization are different checks, and confirming a valid session exists is not the same as confirming that session's user is permitted to access the specific resource being requested. Broken object-level authorization (commonly called IDOR — Insecure Direct Object Reference) is the single most common and consequential vulnerability class: an endpoint that checks "is this a valid logged-in user" but not "does this specific user own or have permission for this specific resource ID" lets any authenticated user access any other user's data simply by changing an ID in the request.
2. Threat modeling belongs at design time, before code is written, because the same flaw costs vastly more to fix the later it's caught. A design-time threat model (using a framework like STRIDE) identifies the same class of flaw a code review or, worse, a production security incident would eventually surface — but at a small fraction of the cost, since fixing a design is a conversation and fixing production is an incident response.
3. SAST, DAST, and SCA each catch a different class of vulnerability, and none of them alone provides adequate coverage. Static analysis (SAST) catches code-pattern issues but has high false-positive rates and misses runtime and business-logic flaws; dynamic analysis (DAST) tests the running application but only along the specific paths it exercises; software composition analysis (SCA) catches known vulnerabilities in dependencies but says nothing about custom code — relying on only one tool type leaves a specific, predictable blind spot for exactly the vulnerability classes the other tools would have caught.
4. A dependency vulnerability's real risk depends on whether the vulnerable code path is actually reachable in this specific application, not on its raw CVSS severity score. A "critical" CVSS 9.8 vulnerability in a function this codebase never calls has near-zero actual risk; a "medium" CVSS 5.3 vulnerability in a function that directly processes untrusted user input can be far more urgent — triaging remediation purely by CVSS score, without checking reachability and exploitability in context, misallocates fixing effort toward the wrong vulnerabilities.
5. Input handling defenses are context-dependent, and the same "sanitized" value can be safe in one output context and dangerous in another. HTML-escaping is the right defense for embedding user input into HTML, but the same escaped value can still be exploitable if it's inserted into a JavaScript context, a SQL query, or a URL without the encoding specific to that context — a single generic sanitize-everywhere function is an incomplete defense that leaves exactly these context-mismatch gaps.

Mental models & heuristics

• When reviewing an endpoint that accesses a specific resource by ID, default to checking for an explicit object-level authorization check (does this authenticated user specifically own or have permission for this resource) rather than accepting authentication alone as sufficient.
• When a new feature or system is being designed, default to running threat modeling at design time (before code is written), rather than deferring security consideration to a code review or scan after implementation.
• When relying on automated security tooling, default to combining SAST, DAST, and SCA together, since each catches a distinct class of vulnerability the others miss.
• When triaging a dependency vulnerability, default to checking actual reachability and exploitability in this specific codebase before prioritizing by CVSS score alone — a high score on unreachable code is lower real risk than a moderate score on a directly exploitable path.
• When handling untrusted input, default to applying context-specific output encoding at each output sink (HTML, JavaScript, SQL, URL each require different encoding), rather than a single generic sanitization pass applied everywhere.
• When a code review touches anything handling user-supplied identifiers or data ownership, default to explicitly testing the authorization boundary (can a different, lower-privileged account access this resource by changing the ID), not just confirming the happy path works for the intended user.

Decision framework

1. Run threat modeling (STRIDE or similar) at design time for new features or systems, before code is written.
2. For any endpoint accessing a specific resource, verify an explicit object-level authorization check exists, not just authentication.
3. Combine SAST, DAST, and SCA tooling in the development pipeline, understanding each tool's specific coverage and blind spots.
4. Triage dependency vulnerabilities by actual reachability and exploitability in this codebase, not CVSS score alone.
5. Apply context-specific output encoding at each output sink handling untrusted input, not a single generic sanitization function.
6. Conduct secure code review focused on the vulnerability classes most relevant to the specific feature (access control for anything touching user-owned data, injection for anything building queries/commands).
7. Document findings with exploitability context and remediation priority, not just the raw severity score a tool generated.

Tools & methods

With engineering teams: specific, reproducible findings ("authenticated user A can retrieve user B's invoice by changing the invoice_id parameter — here's the request that proves it"), not a generic "access control needs review" note. With engineering leadership on remediation prioritization: reachability-adjusted risk stated explicitly alongside the raw CVSS score, so a critical-scored but unreachable finding isn't automatically treated as more urgent than a moderate-scored but directly exploitable one. With teams doing design reviews: threat modeling findings framed around specific attack scenarios for the proposed design, not a generic security checklist applied without context.

Common failure modes

• Confirming an endpoint checks authentication and assuming that's sufficient, missing that it never verifies the authenticated user is authorized for the specific resource requested.
• Deferring security review to the end of development instead of threat modeling at design time, catching flaws at a much higher cost to fix.
• Relying on a single security tool type (only SAST, or only DAST) and missing the vulnerability classes it structurally can't detect.
• Triaging and prioritizing dependency vulnerabilities purely by CVSS score without checking whether the vulnerable code path is actually reachable in this application.
• Applying one generic input sanitization function across all output contexts, leaving gaps where context-specific encoding (JavaScript, SQL, URL) was actually needed.

Worked example

A code review examines the API endpoint GET /api/invoices/{invoice_id}, which returns invoice details.

Finding 1 — Broken object-level authorization (IDOR): The endpoint verifies that a valid authenticated session exists but never checks that the session's user actually owns the requested invoice.

Exploitability confirmation: Testing as a low-privilege account (user_id 500, which legitimately owns only 3 invoices), a security engineer requests invoice_id 1 through 1000 sequentially and successfully retrieves 1,000 different customers' invoice records — names, amounts, billing addresses — despite having no legitimate access to them. Given the production ID range, this confirms exposure across the platform's entire invoice dataset of approximately 45,000 invoices.

Fix: Add an explicit object-level authorization check — query the invoice by ID, then verify invoice.owner_id == authenticated_session.user_id before returning any data (return 403/404 on mismatch). The missing single line of authorization logic was the entire vulnerability.

Finding 2 — Dependency vulnerability triage: Separately, a software composition analysis (SCA) scan flags a CVSS 9.8 (Critical) vulnerability in a JSON parsing library's deserialization function.

Reachability analysis: The vulnerable deserialization method is never actually called anywhere in this codebase — the application only uses the library's basic parse function. Despite the critical CVSS score, actual exploitability in this application is confirmed to be zero.

Meanwhile: A separate CVSS 5.3 (Medium) vulnerability in a different dependency's regex-handling function is directly reachable — it's called on user-submitted search queries, creating a real ReDoS (Regular Expression Denial of Service) risk.

Prioritization: The team fixes the reachable CVSS 5.3 vulnerability before the unreachable CVSS 9.8 vulnerability, since actual exploitability — not raw severity score — determines real risk and remediation urgency.

Security findings memo:

Application Security Review — Invoice API and Dependency Triage Finding 1 (Critical — confirmed exploitable): IDOR on GET /api/invoices/{invoice_id} — missing object-level authorization allows any authenticated user to retrieve any customer's invoice.
