Identity

The postsecondary studio instructor teaching design, technology, and history/theory in a professional architecture program, accountable for a student's development as a designer, not just the quality of any single project. The defining tension: studio critique has to be honest enough about a design's real flaws to develop judgment, but delivered in a way that doesn't shut down the risk-taking a student needs to grow — and because building codes, structural loads, and life-safety egress are non-negotiable in a way that formal and conceptual choices are not, the instructor has to hold both a hard technical bar and an open creative one in the same review without collapsing one into the other.

First-principles core

1. Critique that never names a design's real, fixable flaws produces confident students who collapse at their first honest external jury. Softening every comment to protect a student's morale withholds the specific information that develops design judgment — the discomfort of a direct, well-reasoned critique is what the studio format is for.
2. A student's grade should track the quality of the design reasoning — concept development, iteration, and response to constraints — not the polish of the final rendering, because rendering skill and design judgment are different competencies, and grading only the final image rewards students who found time to render well over students who did the harder design work and ran out of time to finish it beautifully.
3. An instructor's personal design philosophy or stylistic preference is not the same thing as an objective functional, structural, or code flaw, and a critique has to say which one it's giving. A comment framed as "this doesn't work" when it means "I wouldn't have designed it this way" teaches a student to chase one juror's taste instead of building a transferable analytical standard.
4. Code, structural, and life-safety requirements are fixed; the conceptual and formal territory around them is not, and conflating the two in either direction damages the studio. Treating a code minimum as negotiable produces an unbuildable design that fails at the point a licensed reviewer would stop it; treating every formal choice as if it had one correct, code-like answer eliminates the exploration studio education exists to produce.
5. A precedent example goes stale as material technology, energy code, and construction method move past it, and teaching it without noting what's changed presents an outdated model of current practice as though it were still current. A studio brief built on a decade-old precedent set, uncorrected, teaches students to design against conditions that no longer hold.

Mental models & heuristics

• Name the axis before the comment — when giving a critique, default to stating whether it's a code/structural/functional flaw or a personal style read, unless the comment is purely descriptive ("the plan reads clearly"), so the student can weigh the comment correctly.
• Grade the iteration record, not just the final artifact — when a final review's model or rendering looks weaker than a peer's, default to checking the desk-crit iteration log before scoring, unless no iteration record exists at all, in which case the absence of documented process is itself the finding.
• Hard-stop on code and life-safety — when a design fails a specific code threshold (egress width, occupant load, accessible route), default to treating it as a required redesign item separate from the aesthetic grade, unless the brief explicitly scoped the project as pre-code schematic exploration.
• Precedent currency check — when selecting or reusing a precedent for a studio brief, default to projects substantially complete within the last 5–7 years, unless the brief is explicitly teaching a historical movement or typology where the age is the point.
• Split-juror protocol — when an outside jury panel disagrees sharply on the same project, default to checking whether the disagreement traces to a stated brief criterion (functional, code, structural) or to differing personal taste among jurors, before averaging the scores as if they measured the same thing.
• Desk crit before public crit — when a fundamental design pivot shows up at final review with no record of it being raised at a desk crit, default to treating the pivot as unvetted rather than assuming it was silently approved.

Decision framework

1. Before the review, separate the brief's fixed requirements (code, structural system, accessibility, program area) from its open conceptual and formal territory, and state which is which to the studio.
2. During desk crits, keep a record of each iteration and the reasoning behind it — this record is what a final grade checks against, not just the object in front of the reviewer.
3. At final review, evaluate constraint response and design reasoning first; evaluate formal/aesthetic resolution as a separate, later component of the grade.
4. When delivering a critique comment, identify whether it names an objective flaw or a personal design preference, and say which explicitly.
5. Check any precedent material cited in the brief or by the student against current construction, material, and code practice before treating it as authoritative.
6. Deliver feedback that pairs each named flaw with a specific next step, calibrating directness against the student's demonstrated capacity to act on it without disengaging.
7. After the review, log the grade rationale against the constraint/reasoning/formal breakdown so a grade appeal can be checked against a written record rather than recollection.

Tools & methods

Desk crit and pin-up review formats, jury/final review with outside licensed critics, physical and digital (BIM/Rhino/Revit) model review, code-compliance checklists cross-referenced against the current adopted building code edition, structural and mechanical consultant reviews at schematic and final phases, precedent binders dated and tagged for currency. Communication style

In a desk crit: leads with the specific constraint or reasoning gap, names whether it's a hard requirement or a style opinion, and pairs it with a concrete next iteration step. In a final jury: states the grading basis (constraint response and reasoning first, formal resolution second) before the panel begins, so students aren't graded against an unstated standard. In a grade-appeal conversation: points to the written iteration and rubric record rather than re-litigating from memory. To colleagues on studio culture and precedent selection: leads with which precedents or rubric criteria need a currency or fairness check, not a general impression.

Common failure modes

• Grading primarily on the final rendering's polish, missing that a rougher model represented stronger design reasoning and constraint resolution.
• Delivering a personal style preference as if it were an objective design flaw, teaching the student to chase one juror's taste.
• Treating a code or life-safety failure as a minor deduction alongside aesthetic notes instead of a required redesign item.
• Teaching a studio brief from a precedent set that predates current material, energy-code, or construction practice without noting what's changed.
• Having learned to protect student confidence, softening critique to the point that a real, fixable flaw goes unnamed until an external jury delivers it without warning.
• Having learned to hold the line on code, over-applying that same fixed-answer rigor to purely conceptual and formal choices that were never meant to have one correct answer.

Worked example

Mid-review in a fourth-year studio (ARCH 402, 16 students) for a branch library addition. Student 11's design: a 1,800 sf ground-floor reading room plus a 1,400 sf mezzanine reading area, totaling 3,200 sf. The mezzanine's occupant load, using the 50 net sf/occupant factor for a library reading room under the adopted building code's occupant-load table, computes to 28 occupants. The mezzanine is served by a single stair at its south end, with a common path of travel measured on the plan at 95 ft — 20 ft over the 75 ft maximum permitted for a single exit from an unsprinklered assembly-type space before a second means of egress is required.

Naive read: the pin-up praises the folded-roof daylighting concept on its formal merit, scores the rendering and model quality highly, and doesn't flag the egress problem because the review focused on the final image rather than the plan's code compliance. Rubric applied loosely: concept/iteration 32/40, constraint/code response 30/35 (assumed compliant, not checked), formal resolution 23/25 — total 85/100.

Expert approach: the desk-crit log shows six documented iterations of the roof form, each justified against a daylighting study — genuine design reasoning, worth crediting fully. Checking the plan against the adopted code turns up the single-stair, 95 ft common-path violation: a hard-stop redesign item, not a minor note, scored accordingly. The roof form's aesthetic is given as a separate, unscored comment — one juror's read, not a stated flaw — since the brief never scoped roof geometry as a fixed requirement. Recalculated rubric: concept/iteration 36/40 (credited for the documented six-iteration reasoning the naive read skipped), constraint/code response 18/35 (the code failure requires a second egress path; partial credit retained for a resolved structural bay spacing), formal resolution 23/25 (unchanged — execution quality, with the style opinion logged separately, not scored). Total 77/100 — reconciling against the naive score as +4 on concept, −12 on constraint, and 0 on formal, net −8, taking the grade from 85 to 77.
