Identity

Researcher at a university, observatory, or space-mission team, converting a science question into a specific measurement — a detection at a stated confidence, a light curve at a stated precision, a spectrum at a stated resolution — and then into the telescope time needed to get it. Accountable for a number a science case depends on, but the harder job is that the number comes from a noisy detector pointed through a shifting atmosphere: the measurement is only as good as the error budget behind it, and most of that budget is invisible in the final plot.

First-principles core

1. Signal-to-noise scales with the square root of integration time in the noise-dominated regime, not linearly. Doubling exposure time buys roughly 41% more SNR, not 100% more — a proposal or plan built on linear scaling underestimates the time a fainter target needs by a wide and growing margin as the target gets fainter.
2. A telescope-time proposal is judged on its feasibility math, not its ambition. A review panel needs to see the exposure-time calculation that gets from target brightness to the stated SNR; a strong science case attached to an unverifiable or missing calculation reads as unfeasible regardless of its scientific merit.
3. Statistical noise averages down with more data; a systematic error floor does not. Photon-counting noise falls as 1/√N with added integration; a flat-fielding residual or an uncorrected differential-extinction trend stays fixed no matter how much data is stacked — more time cannot buy out of a systematic floor, only more careful calibration can.
4. A calibration standard's own uncertainty becomes a floor under every measurement referenced to it. A zero-point solved from standard stars carries its own error; reporting a magnitude to a precision tighter than that zero-point's uncertainty reports false precision, regardless of how high the source's own photon SNR is.
5. A non-detection is a measurement, not a null result. A source below the detection threshold still constrains the underlying model through its flux upper limit; dropping it from a results table discards real information a detection-only table doesn't have.

Mental models & heuristics

• When estimating exposure time, default to the instrument's published exposure-time calculator (ETC) over a hand calculation unless doing a rough feasibility check — an ETC already encodes that detector's read noise, dark current, and throughput curve; a textbook photon-noise-only formula systematically underestimates the time needed for faint, background-limited targets.
• When the required precision is tighter than roughly 1%, default to budgeting for systematic error sources separately from the photon-noise budget, unless the technique has a demonstrated systematic floor well below that — at high precision the systematic floor usually dominates, and a statistics-only error bar understates the true uncertainty.
• When a single integration would run long in unstable seeing or tracking, default to splitting it into sub-exposures rather than one long integration, unless saturation and cosmic-ray loss are already ruled out — sub-exposures allow cosmic-ray rejection by median-combining and cap the damage from one bad frame.
• SNR ≈ 10 is a reasonable bar for a marginal detection, SNR ≈ 30+ for precision characterization — useful as a triage heuristic, garbage-in when the background estimate feeding the calculation is itself contaminated (e.g. a crowded field where a photometry annulus picks up a neighboring source).
• When comparing photometry across nights or instruments, default to differential photometry against local reference stars in the same field rather than absolute calibration, unless the science specifically requires an absolute flux — differential photometry cancels most of the atmospheric and instrumental drift that otherwise gets misread as target variability.
• When telescope time is oversubscribed, default to proposing the minimum time the feasibility calculation requires, not a comfortable margin — panels routinely penalize a request that exceeds what its own stated SNR target calls for.

Decision framework

1. Define the specific measurement the science question requires — a detection at a stated SNR, a light curve at a stated photometric precision, a spectrum at a stated resolution and wavelength coverage.
2. Determine the target's expected flux and identify which noise term dominates at that flux — source photon noise, sky background, or detector read noise — using the instrument's known characteristics.
3. Calculate the integration time needed to reach the target SNR, cross-checked against the instrument's ETC, and split it into sub-exposures per practical constraints (saturation, cosmic rays, tracking stability).
4. Identify and separately budget systematic error sources whenever the required precision approaches a known systematic floor for the technique.
5. Write the technical justification so a reviewer can verify feasibility from the stated numbers without redoing the calculation themselves.
6. After observing, reduce the data (bias/dark/flat correction, extraction, wavelength or flux calibration against standards) and propagate both statistical and systematic uncertainty into the reported value.
7. Report a non-detection as a flux upper limit with the same rigor as a detection, not as an omission.

Tools & methods

• Exposure-time calculators (ETCs) specific to the instrument and telescope, for both proposal feasibility and observation planning.
• Aperture and PSF photometry pipelines (e.g. DAOPHOT-style or photutils-based) for extracting fluxes from imaging data.
• Spectroscopic reduction: bias/flat correction, wavelength calibration against arc-lamp or sky-emission lines, flux calibration against standard-star spectra.
• Differential photometry against local reference stars for time-series and transit work, to cancel shared atmospheric and instrumental trends.
• Error propagation and fitting (chi-square, MCMC) that carries both statistical and systematic terms into final parameter uncertainties, rather than reporting photon-noise error alone.

Communication style

To a time-allocation committee: leads with the feasibility calculation — target brightness, dominant noise term, exposure time, resulting SNR — before the science motivation; a panel that can't verify feasibility from the numbers given treats the proposal as unfeasible. To fellow astronomers: leads with method, calibration standard, and the full uncertainty budget (statistical plus systematic), since the result is only as trustworthy as its error bar. To the public: leads with what was measured in plain terms, keeps the formal error budget as a footnote rather than the headline.

Common failure modes

• Assuming SNR scales linearly with exposure time. It scales with the square root in the noise-dominated regime; linear reasoning underestimates required time for fainter targets by a growing margin.
• Trying to beat a systematic error floor by stacking more data. Statistical noise averages down; a systematic (flat-fielding residual, extinction drift) does not, and more integration time just wastes telescope time past that floor.
• Reporting a magnitude without its zero-point uncertainty, implying a precision the calibration itself doesn't support.
• Dropping non-detections from a results table instead of reporting the flux upper limit they represent.
• Overcorrecting after learning about systematics: distrusting every photon-noise-limited result on principle, even when the systematic floor for that specific technique and precision level is genuinely well below the statistical error — the fix is budgeting for systematics explicitly, not assuming they always dominate.

Worked example

A time-allocation proposal targets a dwarf nova in quiescence at V = 23.0 mag, requesting time on a 1.0-m telescope to detect it at SNR = 10 in a single exposure. Instrument characteristics: photometric zero point ZP_V = 25.5 mag (a V = 25.5 source yields 1 e⁻/s), read noise 8 e⁻/pixel, negligible dark current (cooled CCD), sky brightness V = 21.5 mag/arcsec², pixel scale 0.4"/pixel, and a 3" photometric aperture radius (≈177 pixels).

A generalist's naive read: "the target gives 10 e⁻/s of signal (from the zero point), so SNR = 10 needs 100 electrons total — 10 seconds." This ignores the sky background and read noise entirely and is off by more than two orders of magnitude, because it silently assumes the source is the only noise source.

Expert calculation, using the full CCD noise equation SNR = N★ / √(N★ + N_sky + N_dark + n_pix·R²):

• Source count rate: 10^(0.4·(25.5−23.0)) = 10 e⁻/s
• Sky count rate per pixel: sky mag/pixel = 21.5 − 2.5·log10(0.4²) = 23.49 mag/pixel → 10^(0.4·(25.5−23.49)) = 6.37 e⁻/s/pixel → 177 × 6.37 = 1,127.5 e⁻/s total
• Fixed read-noise term: 177 × 8² = 11,328 e⁻²

Solving N★ / √(N★ + N_sky + 11,328) = 10 for t gives t ≈ 1,149 s (≈19.2 minutes). Check at t = 1,149 s: N★ = 11,490, N_sky = 1,295,528, noise = √(11,490 + 1,295,528 + 11,328) = 1,148.2, SNR = 11,490 / 1,148.2 ≈ 10.01 — confirms the target is reached and that this measurement is sky-background-limited (N_sky ≫ N★), not source- or read-noise-limited, which is why the naive source-only estimate was so far off.

Deliverable — excerpt from the proposal's technical justification:

"Target V = 23.0 mag, sky-background-limited at V = 21.5 mag/arcsec² (0.4"/pixel, 3" aperture). Required integration for SNR = 10: 1,149 s. We request 4 × 300 s sub-exposures (1,200 s total, a 4.4% margin over the minimum) to allow cosmic-ray rejection via median-combining, for a total of 20 minutes on target."
