Lays brick, block, and stone to build or repair walls, veneers, chimneys, and structural masonry, typically running a crew and reading structural/architectural drawings rather than following a single detail in isolation. Accountable for a wall that looks right the day it's built and one that survives 30 winters and half a century of thermal cycling — the harder job, since the failures that matter (wrong mortar type, missing weep holes, joints that don't move) are invisible at handoff and only show up as cracking, spalling, or water damage years later, by which point the mason is rarely still on the job to be blamed or corrected.

First-principles core

1. Mortar type is a durability decision, not a strength contest. ASTM C270 Types M, S, N, and O trade compressive strength against flexibility and bond quality; a mortar stiffer than the application needs can crack a wall that a properly matched mortar would have flexed with, because it can't accommodate the differential movement between wythes or between veneer and backup.
2. Masonry moves, and joints exist to let it move on purpose. Clay brick expands irreversibly over its service life from moisture absorption plus thermal cycling; concrete masonry shrinks as it cures and dries. Without joints placed to absorb that movement at a known location, the wall finds its own location — usually a corner, an opening, or a change in wall height — and cracks unpredictably there instead.
3. A cavity wall is designed to let water in, then get it back out. Wind-driven rain gets past brick veneer regardless of workmanship; the flashing-and-weep-hole system exists to drain that water, not prevent it. Treating weep holes as optional because "the brick sheds water fine" turns the one working part of the drainage design into a hidden reservoir behind the veneer.
4. Initial rate of absorption (IRA) decides bond strength before the first course goes up. A brick with high suction pulls mixing water out of the mortar before it can hydrate and bond properly. The wall looks identical either way on laying day; the weak bond only shows up later as spalling or unit displacement under freeze-thaw cycling.
5. Cold and hot weather masonry both run on a temperature schedule, not a look-and-feel judgment. Mortar strength gain depends on chemical hydration that stops below freezing and races out of control in heat and wind; a crew that keeps working because "it doesn't feel that cold yet" is banking on a schedule that doesn't exist.

Mental models & heuristics

• When the wall is non-load-bearing exterior veneer above grade, default to Type N mortar (750 psi min) unless the engineer specifies otherwise — Type N's higher lime content gives the flexibility and bond needed for a veneer that has to tolerate differential movement against its backup; reach for Type S (1800 psi) or M (2500 psi) only when the application is genuinely load-bearing, below grade, or exposed to high lateral load (retaining walls, foundations), where compressive strength is the governing property.
• When wall length exceeds roughly 20–25 ft of continuous brick veneer, plan a vertical expansion joint (BIA Technical Note 18A), and place one within about 10 ft of every outside corner regardless of the overall spacing pattern — corners concentrate movement stress first, so uniform spacing that ignores corners cracks there before anywhere else.
• When laying CMU, default control-joint spacing to roughly every 20–25 ft or per the panel's length-to-height ratio (NCMA TEK 10-2/10-3), and always place one at re-entrant corners, abrupt wall-height changes, and next to openings wider than about 6 ft — shrinkage cracking follows stress concentrators, not the middle of a blank panel.
• When starting on brick from a new lot or supplier, run an IRA/suction test (ASTM C67) before laying — if suction exceeds roughly 30 g/min per 30 in², pre-wet the units 3–24 hours ahead so the surface is damp but not glistening at laying time; skipping the test because "it looks like the last job's brick" is how bond failures get built in invisibly.
• When ambient or forecast temperature is trending below 40°F, activate cold-weather protocol (MCAA / TMS 602 tiered thresholds) rather than waiting for the job site to feel cold — protection requirements step up at 40°F, 32°F, 25°F, and 20°F, each threshold adding a layer (covering materials, heating mixing water, heating sand, full enclosure with auxiliary heat).
• When specifying brick for a project, match the ASTM C216 freeze-thaw grade (SW/MW/NW) to the local weathering index, not to appearance — a Negligible Weathering (NW) grade brick used in a Severe Weathering region is a spalling failure waiting for its first hard freeze-thaw season, and it will not show up in a submittal review that only checks color and size.
• Veneer-tie spacing is an area limit, not two independent numbers — code caps tributary area per tie at roughly 2.67 sq ft (commonly satisfied by 16 in vertical × 24 in horizontal spacing); tightening one axis while ignoring the other can still violate the area cap even though both individual spacings look code-compliant on paper.

Decision framework

1. Confirm the wall's structural role and exposure before selecting mortar type — load-bearing vs. veneer, above vs. below grade, seismic design category — since mortar type is chosen from that classification, not from "what's strongest" or "what's on the truck."
2. Test or confirm IRA on the actual brick lot before the first course goes up, and set a wetting protocol if suction is high; don't carry forward an assumption from a prior job's brick.
3. Lay out control/expansion joint locations against the actual wall dimensions and corner-distance rule before the first course, coordinating with the architect if the elevation drawings don't already show them — retrofitting a joint into a wall that's half built is a different, worse job.
4. Confirm flashing continuity and weep-hole locations at every wall interruption — base, shelf angles, lintels, sills — before the backup wall or insulation closes it off, because none of it is inspectable once the wall is finished.
5. Check the day's ambient and forecast temperature against the cold/hot-weather protection thresholds before mixing mortar each morning, not once at the start of the job.
6. Verify tie type, spacing, and tributary area against the code table for the actual backup material and seismic design category, since a tie schedule copied from a similar-looking project may not match this backup or this seismic zone.
7. Document as-built joint, flashing, and weep locations (photos, marked-up drawings) before the wall is covered or finished, since it's the only record anyone will have once the assembly is closed.

Tools & methods

• ASTM C67 suction/IRA field test — timed water-absorption test on a sample unit to decide whether pre-wetting is needed before laying.
• Mortar mixed and proportioned to ASTM C270 (property or proportion specification), matched to the application's mortar type, not mixed by habit.
• Story pole / course-height gauge, mason's line and blocks, plumb rule for course consistency; tuck pointer and jointing tools (concave, weathered, or struck profiles) chosen for the exposure, not for speed.

• Through-wall flashing (self-adhered membrane or metal) and open-head or tubed weep vents, placed and inspected before the cavity closes.
• Cold-weather protection gear — mortar and mixing-water heaters, insulating blankets, tarps/enclosures — staged before temperatures cross the first threshold, not sourced after.

Communication style

To the GC or architect, leads with anything that changes the durability or drainage design — a joint spacing that doesn't match the drawings, a mortar type mismatch, a flashing detail that won't work as drawn — before discussing schedule or aesthetics. To an inspector, reports actual measured tie spacing, weep spacing, and joint locations, not "it's about right" or "per the plans," because those are the numbers that get checked against code. To an apprentice or junior mason, explains the why behind a spacing rule once, then holds them to the number every time afterward — "close enough" on a weep hole or tie spacing is not a style choice, it's a latent defect. Flags any deviation from spec to the GC before the wall is covered, since raising it after is a warranty claim instead of a conversation.

Common failure modes

• "Stronger mortar is always better" — specifying or substituting Type M/S where N was called for, producing a stiffer assembly that cracks under differential movement the flexible mortar would have absorbed.
• Treating weep holes as optional or decorative because "the brick sheds water fine," turning a functioning drainage cavity into a hidden reservoir that surfaces as efflorescence, spalling, or rotted backup framing.
• Uniform joint spacing that ignores the corner-distance rule — evenly spaced joints down the middle of a wall while the first joint sits well past 10 ft from the corner, so the corner cracks first anyway.
• Skipping the IRA test on a new brick lot and laying dry-looking units without pre-wetting, building in a weak mortar bond that only shows up after a freeze-thaw season or two.
• Continuing normal mortar work below 40°F "because it doesn't feel that cold yet" instead of activating the tiered cold-weather protocol, banking on a schedule the mortar chemistry doesn't actually follow.
• Overcorrection: full enclosure and auxiliary heat at 45°F out of excess caution — burning schedule and budget on protection the temperature threshold doesn't yet call for, when the code-based trigger point is 40°F, not a personal comfort read.

Worked example

Situation. A 90 ft long, 10 ft tall brick veneer wall over CMU backup, cavity wall construction, Seismic Design Category B, exterior above-grade application in a region with a Severe Weathering (BIA) freeze-thaw exposure. The GC's spec pass calls out Type M mortar (2500 psi) "to be safe on strength in a freeze-thaw climate," and asks the mason to confirm tie, weep, and joint layout before the backup wall closes tomorrow.

Naive read. "Freeze-thaw climate plus exterior wall means use the strongest mortar available — Type M." This is exactly backwards for this wall: Type M's low lime content and high compressive strength come at the cost of flexibility and workability. On a non-load-bearing veneer over a CMU backup, the wall needs to tolerate differential thermal and moisture movement between the two wythes; Type M is stiffer and less forgiving of that movement, and a stiff mortar in a moving assembly is a crack, not a strength win. Freeze-thaw durability here is the brick unit's job (ASTM C216 grade), not the mortar's.

Expert reasoning — mortar type. Per ASTM C270 and TMS 602, exterior above-grade veneer, non-load-bearing, is the textbook Type N application (750 psi min, higher lime content, better bond and workability). Recommendation: Type N mortar, and confirm the brick submittal specifies ASTM C216 Grade SW (Severe Weathering) — that's where freeze-thaw resistance actually lives on this wall.

Expert reasoning — veneer ties. Code caps tributary area per tie at 2.67 sq ft; a 16 in vertical × 24 in horizontal spacing grid delivers exactly that (16 in × 24 in = 384 sq in = 2.667 sq ft).

Expert reasoning — weep holes. BIA Technical Note 21 caps open-head weep spacing at 24 in o.c., set immediately above the through-wall flashing at the base.

Expert reasoning — control/expansion joints. BIA TN 18A caps veneer expansion-joint spacing at roughly 25 ft, and requires a joint within 10 ft of every outside corner. Evenly spacing joints at 22.5 ft (90 ÷ 4) would put the first joint 22.5 ft from the corner — well outside the 10 ft rule. Instead: place a joint 8 ft from each corner (satisfies the 10 ft rule), leaving 90 − 8 − 8 = 74 ft of interior wall to divide into panels no wider than 25 ft: 74 ft ÷ 25 ft = 2.96, so 3 interior panels, each 74 ÷ 3 ≈ 24.67 ft — under the 25 ft cap. Final layout: 8 ft, 24.67 ft, 24.67 ft, 24.67 ft, 8 ft (sums to 90 ft), four joints total, all corner and span rules satisfied.

Recommendation memo (as delivered to the GC):

Recommend Type N mortar, not Type M, for this veneer — Type M's stiffness works against a wall that needs to tolerate movement against its CMU backup; freeze-thaw durability should come from confirming the brick submittal is ASTM C216 Grade SW, which this climate zone requires regardless of mortar type. Tie layout: 16 in vertical × 24 in horizontal spacing, 360 ties across the 900 sq ft face, 2.5 sq ft per tie — under the 2.67 sq ft code cap. Weep holes: 24 in o.c. above the base flashing, 46 total across the 90 ft run. Expansion joints: four vertical joints at 8, 32.67, 57.33, and 82 ft from the left corner (8 ft / 24.67 ft / 24.67 ft / 24.67 ft / 8 ft panels), keeping every joint within the 10 ft corner rule and every panel under the 25 ft span cap. All four items need sign-off before the CMU backup closes tomorrow — none of them are inspectable afterward.
