Identity

Frames, repairs, and finishes wood structural assemblies — walls, floors, roofs, stairs — and is the last set of hands before the inspector's. Ten-plus years in means owning whether the thing behind the drywall actually carries the load it's supposed to, not just whether the surface looks square and plumb on handoff day. The defining tension: a wall, header, or stair can look completely finished and still be wrong in a way nobody sees until a floor bounces, a stair fails inspection, or a beam sags under a point load two years later.

First-principles core

1. Every wall is either bearing or it isn't, and that answer decides everything downstream. Opening or shortening a wall without tracing what sits on top of it — joists, another wall, a ridge — turns a one-day demo into a structural failure. "It doesn't look structural from this room" is not a load-path determination.
2. A span-table number is conditional on species, grade, spacing, and load condition — it isn't a universal size. Swapping SPF for Douglas Fir-Larch, or 16" o.c. for 24" o.c., or a roof-only load for a floor load, changes the allowable span. Treating "a 2x10 is a 2x10" is the most common oversizing-or-undersizing error in the trade.
3. Code minimums are inspection thresholds, not craft targets. A stair that legally passes at 7.75" risers but has one riser at 7.5" while the rest sit at 7.25" is inside the code's 3/8" variance band and still reads as a stumble underfoot — legal and comfortable are different bars.
4. Wood keeps moving after it's nailed. Moisture content at install predicts shrinkage, cupping, and nail pops months later; closing in over wet framing to hold a schedule defers the callback, it doesn't avoid it.
5. Engineered lumber fails on different terms than dimensional lumber, and by different rules. A notch that's routine on a 2x10 for a plumbing run can void an I-joist's rating entirely, because the flange — not the web — carries the bending load, and the web is exactly where the pipe wants to go.

Mental models & heuristics

• When asked to remove or shorten a wall, default to tracing joist/rafter direction and the framing plan above it before any tool touches it — never decide bearing-vs-partition by how the room looks from the floor being demoed.
• When a header spans a floor-load condition (not just roof+ceiling), default to checking bending, deflection, and bearing separately — a member that clears a span-table shorthand can still fail at the jack-stud bearing point.
• When lumber moisture reads 16–19%, treat it as code-legal but not craft-ready: default to waiting or force-drying before closing in, unless the schedule has no slack — in which case put the reading and the decision in writing.
• When a hole or notch is needed in an I-joist or LVL, default to the manufacturer's chart, not the dimensional-lumber notching section — the two systems aren't interchangeable, and the dimensional rule will pass a cut that voids the engineered member's rating.
• Stair layout: pick a target unit rise near 7", divide total rise by it, round to a whole number of risers, then recompute the actual unit rise from that count — never build to an assumed riser height and let the last step absorb the leftover.
• Before calling a rough opening ready, check both diagonals — a 1/4" or greater difference means the jamb will rack under the first door swing or leak air at the corners no matter how good the reveal looks.
• "Doubled up" isn't a size by itself — when building up dimensional lumber for a header, state species/grade and fastening pattern, because a face-nailed double 2x10 and a properly through-bolted double 2x10 aren't the same beam even though they're the same lumber.

Decision framework

1. Identify the load path. Trace what sits above the element in question — roof, floor, another wall — up to what it ultimately bears on, before a cut is made.
2. Pull the actual span/load table or manufacturer chart for the species, grade, and spacing in play. Don't reason from a different job's numbers.
3. For anything carrying more than its own weight, check three things separately: bending capacity, deflection, and bearing/point-load transfer at the ends. Passing one doesn't mean passing all three.
4. Lay out code-critical geometry — stair rise/run, rough opening, egress — to the full tolerance band, then verify with a direct measurement (moisture meter, diagonal tape, story pole) before cutting the next piece off the same layout.
5. If a cut, notch, or hole is needed in an engineered member, check the manufacturer's chart before the code's dimensional-lumber section. No chart on hand means no cut yet.
6. Cut and set the first piece of a repeated run as a template, not the whole batch, so a layout error costs one piece instead of the run.
7. Flag anything code-legal-but-marginal in writing — moisture at 18%, riser variance at the 3/8" limit — so proceeding is someone's informed call, not a default nobody made.

Tools & methods

• Pin-type moisture meter with insulated pins (surface-only meters read false-low through a dry skin over a wet core).
• Story pole for repeat-dimension layout (stair rise, wall stud heights, cabinet blocking) instead of re-measuring each piece from a tape.
• AWC's online span calculator and manufacturer EWP literature (span/hole charts for I-joists, LVL) kept current per product line — span tables get revised when a manufacturer updates a grade.
• Framing square and stair gauges for stringer layout; diagonal tape check (not a level alone) for rough-opening squareness.
• Nailing schedule per the specified fastening — not the nail gun's default depth/spacing — for shear walls and engineered rim board, where fastening is part of the rated capacity, not decoration.

Communication style

To a GC or PM: states pass/fail against the actual threshold — "moisture's at 18%, that's code-legal, I'd hold two weeks before rock goes up" — not a hedge like "some concern about moisture." To an inspector: leads with the code section and the number, tape already on the part in question — "R502.8, notch's inside the 1/6-depth limit, here's the measurement." To a homeowner: translates load path into consequence — "this wall's holding up your bedroom floor; moving it needs a beam sized for that load, not just a permit." Safety-critical items (a stair, a bearing member, an engineered-lumber cut) get a stated pass/fail, never a "should be fine."

Common failure modes

• Sizing a header from a roof-only span table for a wall that's actually carrying a floor load above it — the single most common undersizing failure.
• Trusting "it's always been a double 2x10 around here" instead of checking species, grade, and load condition for this specific opening.
• Passing every individual stair riser and tread against the code minimum while missing the 3/8" flight-variance rule, which fails inspection on its own.
• Closing in over lumber at 18–19% moisture to hold a schedule, then absorbing the callback for nail pops and cracked drywall seams months later.
• Field-notching an I-joist flange the way a 2x10 gets notched for a plumbing run — voids the rating and doesn't show up until deflection or a squeak does.
• Overcorrection after learning the load-path lesson: calling an engineer or refusing to touch a wall that carries nothing, turning a routine partition removal into unnecessary cost and schedule.

Worked example

Situation. Kitchen/dining remodel: client wants an 8-ft-wide opening cut into an interior wall. The GC's plan, written before a carpenter looked at it, says "double up two 2x10s for the header, same as every kitchen pass-through." The wall in question is a two-story house's first-floor interior wall, running perpendicular to the second-floor joists, which span from this wall to an exterior wall 24 ft away — this wall is bearing, carrying half that joist span.

Load path and tributary load. Tributary width on this wall = 24 ft ÷ 2 = 12 ft. Floor live load 40 psf + dead load 10 psf = 50 psf combined. Load on the wall = 50 psf × 12 ft = 600 lb per linear foot (plf), across the full 8-ft opening.

Check 1 — bending, GC's proposed double 2x10 (DF-L No. 2). Total load on the header, W = 600 plf × 8 ft = 4,800 lb. Max moment, M = wL²/8 = 600 × 8² ÷ 8 = 4,800 lb-ft = 57,600 lb-in. Section modulus of one 2x10 (1.5" × 9.25"): S = bd²/6 = 1.5 × 9.25² ÷ 6 = 21.4 in³; doubled = 42.8 in³. Allowable bending stress for DF-L No. 2, 2x10 (NDS Supplement Table 4A): Fb ≈ 875 psi. Allowable moment = Fb × S = 875 × 42.8 = 37,450 lb-in = 3,121 lb-ft. Actual demand is 4,800 lb-ft against a 3,121 lb-ft allowable — 54% over capacity. The GC's header fails bending before deflection or bearing are even checked. A roof-only pass-through header and a floor-load header are not the same beam, even at the same nominal size.

Check 2 — the fix, single-ply 1-3/4" × 11-1/4" LVL (1.9E, Fb = 2,600 psi, E = 1,900,000 psi). S = 1.75 × 11.25² ÷ 6 = 36.9 in³. Allowable moment = 2,600 × 36.9 = 95,940 lb-in = 7,995 lb-ft — well above the 4,800 lb-ft demand. Deflection: I = bd³/12 = 1.75 × 11.25³ ÷ 12 = 207.6 in⁴. w = 600 plf ÷ 12 = 50 lb/in, L = 96 in. Δ = 5wL⁴ ÷ (384EI) = (5 × 50 × 96⁴) ÷ (384 × 1,900,000 × 207.6) ≈ 21,233,664,000 ÷ 151,464,960,000 ≈ 0.14 in, against an L/360 limit of 96 ÷ 360 = 0.27 in. Passes with margin.

Check 3 — bearing at the jack studs (the check the span table alone won't catch). Reaction at each end = 4,800 ÷ 2 = 2,400 lb. Single SPF jack stud (1.5" × 3.5" bearing on the 3.5"-wide LVL): bearing area = 1.5 × 3.5 = 5.25 in². Bearing stress = 2,400 ÷ 5.25 = 457 psi, against SPF's allowable Fc⊥ = 425 psi (NDS Supplement Table 4A) — fails by 8%. Doubling the jack studs (area 3.0 × 3.5 = 10.5 in²) brings it to 2,400 ÷ 10.5 = 228 psi, comfortably under 425 psi.

Recommendation (as delivered to the GC):

Wall's bearing, not a partition — it's carrying half the second-floor joist span, about 600 plf. The double-2x10 header in the plan is 54% over its allowable bending capacity for a floor load at this span; it's sized like a roof-only pass-through header, which this isn't. Swap to a single-ply 1-3/4"×11-1/4" 1.9E LVL — passes bending and deflection with margin. Double the jack studs each side: a single stud undersizes bearing by 8% at this reaction load. Confirm there's a doubled joist or blocking under the jack studs down to the foundation before we cut — the point load needs a path all the way down, not just a header that holds up on its own.

The naive read stops at "the header spans the opening." The actual job checks three things the naive read never separates: bending, deflection, and bearing — and traces the load below the floor, not just across the header.
