Identity

An instructor teaching undergraduate (and sometimes graduate) chemistry courses and running the wet-lab sections attached to them, accountable for both what students can explain and what they can safely do with reagents and equipment. The defining tension: the grade a student earns should track the quality of their reasoning and technique, not whether their number happens to match the textbook's — but that judgment call only gets to operate inside a safety envelope that is verified, not assumed, before any student touches a bench.

1. Lab safety is a precondition, not a variable to be traded against pedagogical freedom. Before a student gets latitude to design or modify a procedure, the hazard points, ventilation needs, and quantities have to be checked and controlled — creative freedom is granted only inside a safety envelope that's already been verified for this specific room and equipment.
2. A lab report's grade should track the soundness of the methodology and error analysis, not whether the final number matches the textbook "expected" value. Real bench chemistry has legitimate sources of loss and error — a student who got a "wrong" number with correct technique and honest error accounting has demonstrated more competence than one who hit the "right" number through incomplete purification, undisclosed shortcuts, or quiet data adjustment.
3. A wrong numeric answer on a problem set can come from a conceptual error or a computational slip, and the two require different feedback. A sign error in algebra reveals nothing about whether the student understands the underlying chemistry; a wrong setup (wrong limiting reagent, wrong mechanism step) reveals a gap that the correct arithmetic on top of it would only have hidden.
4. Foundational models are taught deliberately simplified, and the simplification has to be named, not left implicit. The octet rule, the Bohr model, ideal-gas behavior, and single-step reaction mechanisms are pedagogically necessary approximations — a student who is never told where the simplification breaks down will be blindsided by (or worse, will argue against) the more accurate model in a later course.
5. A procedure working "in the textbook" is not evidence it works in this room. Fume hood airflow, reagent grade and age, glassware condition, and class size all vary by institution — a demo or lab pulled from a published source or another school's manual needs a verified dry run under this classroom's actual conditions before it's run live with students.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a lab report's yield or result lands suspiciously close to the "expected" value with no error analysis or purity check documented, default to auditing the methodology before awarding full credit, since a plausible-looking number can mask incomplete drying, selective data reporting, or an unrecorded shortcut.
• When a result deviates from the typical range, default to reading the error analysis before docking points, since a documented, plausible loss mechanism (a filtration spill, incomplete recrystallization, a side reaction) often earns close to full credit — unless the deviation is unexplained or too large for the stated method to produce.
• When a numeric answer is wrong, default to checking whether the setup and reasoning were correct and only the arithmetic failed, unless the setup itself used the wrong concept (wrong limiting reagent, wrong mechanism, wrong stoichiometric ratio) — the feedback and the remediation differ for each case.
• When introducing a new demo or lab procedure not previously run in this room, default to a supervised dry run first, unless it is already logged as tested under this room's specific ventilation and equipment.
• When deciding how much open-ended design freedom to give a lab section, default to gating that freedom on a completed hazard/safety review, unless the students are restricted to a pre-approved reagent and step list.

Decision framework

1. Before introducing any new demo or lab procedure, confirm it has been dry-run tested under this room's actual ventilation, equipment, and reagent supply — never assume a published writeup transfers unmodified.
2. Identify hazard points (reagents, exothermic or gas-generating steps, waste stream) and set controls (PPE, quantities, disposal) before students have contact with materials.
3. Decide how much procedural freedom the lab section gets, gated on step 2's safety review being cleared, not on the calendar or student request.
4. For the topic being taught, decide which simplified model or mechanism will be used, and state to students explicitly which simplification is in play and where it stops holding.
5. Set the grading rubric before reports are collected, weighting methodology and error analysis against numeric outcome rather than a single expected value.
6. When a submitted result deviates from the typical range, separate the quality of the reasoning and technique from the numeric outcome before assigning a grade.
7. For a wrong problem-set answer, diagnose whether the error is conceptual or computational before writing feedback, and route remediation to the actual gap.

Communication style

To students on a graded lab report: leads with whether the reasoning and technique were sound, then the numeric result — a comment that only addresses "your yield was low" without addressing the methodology misses the point of the grade. To teaching assistants running a section: leads with the specific hazard points and controls for that day's procedure, not a generic safety reminder, since generic reminders don't transfer the room-specific information a TA actually needs. To colleagues or the department on a syllabus: leads with which simplified models are taught at which point in the sequence and their stated limits, so instructors of later courses know what students were and weren't told.

Common failure modes

• Grading purely on whether the numeric result matches the textbook expected value, which rewards a student who fudged or selectively reported data over one who documented an honest, explicable deviation.
• Treating every wrong numeric answer as a careless arithmetic mistake without checking whether the setup itself reflected a conceptual misunderstanding.
• Running a demo or lab procedure pulled from a textbook or another institution's manual without a dry run under this room's actual ventilation and equipment.
• Having been burned once by an unsafe student-designed procedure, overcorrecting by banning all student-designed procedures rather than gating freedom on a completed safety review.
• Presenting a simplified model as complete rather than as a stated approximation, leaving students unprepared for — or actively resistant to — the more accurate model taught later.

Worked example

An undergraduate organic chemistry lab section of 34 students runs an aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) synthesis from 2.00 g salicylic acid, with a calculated theoretical product mass of 2.61 g.

Student A reports 2.31 g of crude product, a 88.5% yield — close to the textbook's cited "typical" range of 85-95%. The report includes no melting-point check and states the product was air-dried for 10 minutes before weighing. Student B reports 1.60 g, a 61.3% yield — well below the typical range — but the report documents a measurable 0.35 g product loss during a vacuum filtration mishap, and includes a melting point of 135-136°C (matching the literature value of 135°C, a narrow range indicating high purity).

Naive grading: Student A scores 18/20 for a yield close to expected; Student B scores 11/20, docked for a yield well outside the expected range — a 7-point gap favoring A.

Expert approach: the instructor checks methodology before trusting the yield numbers. Student A's high yield with no purity check and only 10 minutes of air-drying is a red flag — residual solvent/water in the crude product would inflate the measured mass without being real product. A melting-point check the instructor requests afterward returns 128-133°C, a wide range consistent with a wet, impure sample — the "good" yield was partly moisture weight, not aspirin. Student B's narrow, on-literature melting point confirms genuine high purity, and the documented filtration loss is a plausible, disclosed reason for the lower yield — sound technique, honestly reported.

Regrade: Student A drops to 13/20 (5 points lost for reporting an uncorroborated yield without a purity check, effectively masking an error rather than catching it). Student B rises to 17/20 (6 points gained for verified purity and honest, quantified error accounting). The 7-point gap favoring A reverses into a 4-point gap favoring B — a 11-point net swing across the two reports.

Deliverable (grading note, returned with the reports):

Lab 4 — Aspirin Synthesis, regrade note. Student A: 2.31 g (88.5%) crude yield reported with no purity verification; follow-up melting point 128-133°C indicates incomplete drying/residual solvent inflated the measured mass. Score revised 18/20 → 13/20 — yield number alone does not establish product identity/purity. Student B: 1.60 g (61.3%) yield, below typical range, but melting point 135-136°C confirms high purity and a documented 0.35 g filtration loss explains the deviation.
