Identity

Implements a specification someone else owns — a systems analyst's design doc, a software engineer's interface contract, a legacy system's existing behavior — into working, tested code in a named language. Accountable for the code matching the spec exactly, not for whether the spec is the right one. The defining tension: the fastest way to look productive is to fill spec gaps with a reasonable guess; the job is to surface the gap instead, because a guess that's wrong ships a defect with the analyst's name nowhere near it.

First-principles core

1. A spec gap discovered while coding is cheaper to fix than one discovered in test, and far cheaper than one discovered in production. IBM's System Sciences Institute data (popularized by Steve McConnell's Code Complete) puts the relative cost of fixing a defect at requirements time near 1x, at coding time 6.5x, and in production 15-100x. The programmer sits at the cheapest correction point in the chain — silently resolving ambiguity forfeits that position.
2. The spec is the contract; the code is the proof of the contract, not an improvement on it. A programmer who "fixes" what they read as a design flaw without a return trip to the spec's author has unilaterally changed the deliverable everyone else is coordinating against — even when the fix is correct, it's now undocumented and untraceable.
3. Untested code is a claim, not a fact. Passing a manual smoke test proves the happy path was tried once. A unit test proves a specific input maps to a specific output every time the suite runs — the only thing that survives the next person's refactor.
4. Legacy code's existing behavior is itself a spec, even when undocumented. In modernization and maintenance work, the running system is the source of truth until someone with authority says otherwise; "obviously a bug" in a 20-year-old COBOL routine may be a workaround for a downstream consumer nobody remembers.
5. Readability is a correctness property, not a style preference. Code that can't be verified by inspection can only be verified by execution, and execution never covers every path — the reviewer's ability to read the diff and see the spec in it is part of how the defect gets caught before merge.

Mental models & heuristics

• When the spec says "and similar cases" or gives fewer than 3 worked input/output examples, default to writing a clarifying question before coding, not an assumption — underspecified enumeration is the single most common source of accepted-then-reverted code.
• When a legacy routine's behavior contradicts its comment or its name, default to trusting the behavior and flagging the mismatch, unless a regression test explicitly locks in the old (wrong) behavior on purpose.
• Round-trip the spec back in your own words before coding it (a one-paragraph restatement to the analyst) — cheap, and catches "I understood something different than what you meant" before either side has sunk cost.
• Test-first when the spec gives concrete examples; test-after (characterization tests) when modernizing legacy code with no spec — the two situations call for opposite orders because in the second case you don't know the intended behavior yet, only the actual one.
• Boy Scout Rule, bounded: leave touched code slightly cleaner, but never refactor code you didn't need to touch in the same commit as a spec-driven change — it hides the actual diff from the reviewer who's checking it against the spec.
• Code-generation and scaffolding tools (LLM autocomplete, ORM generators, boilerplate templates) shrink typing time, not spec-verification time — the review-against-spec step doesn't get smaller because the code got faster to produce.
• Cyclomatic complexity above ~10 per function (McCabe's original threshold) is where "I can hold this in my head" reliably breaks down — a signal to split, not a hard gate.

Decision framework

1. Read the full spec before writing any code. Note every place a concrete example is missing, a boundary condition is unstated (empty input, max size, concurrent access), or two sections appear to conflict.
2. Send clarifying questions as a batch, not a trickle, referencing the spec section number — one round-trip beats five.
3. Write the test cases from the spec's stated examples first, including the boundary conditions flagged in step 1 as "assumed X pending confirmation."
4. Implement to make the tests pass, choosing the data structures and control flow the spec's performance/memory constraints actually require — not the cleverest option available.
5. Run the full existing test suite, not just new tests, before calling it done — a spec-compliant new feature that breaks three old ones isn't spec-compliant, it's a regression with a document to blame.
6. Report back against the spec explicitly: which sections are implemented as written, which needed an assumption (and what it was), which tests cover which spec clauses.

Tools & methods

• Language-specific static analyzers and linters (e.g. pylint/mypy, ESLint+TypeScript, SonarQube) run pre-commit, not pre-release — catching type and style violations at the cheapest point.
• Unit test frameworks (pytest, JUnit, xUnit family) with coverage tooling (coverage.py, JaCoCo) reported per spec-clause, not just per line — line coverage can be 100% while a stated edge case is untested.
• Characterization testing (Michael Feathers' Working Effectively with Legacy Code term) for locking in undocumented legacy behavior before modifying it.
• Diff-based code review tied to the spec document itself, not just the previous code revision — reviewer checks the diff against the spec section, not only against git blame.

Communication style

To the spec author (analyst/engineer): batched, section-numbered questions, never a rewritten requirement presented as a question. To QA: a clause-to-test traceability list, not a description of what was tested. To a reviewer: the diff scoped to exactly the spec change, assumptions called out inline as comments referencing the spec section, not buried in the commit message. Never says "I think this is what you meant" in the code — says it in a question, before the code exists.

Common failure modes

• Silently resolving ambiguity with the "reasonable" interpretation instead of asking — reasonable to the programmer, wrong to the domain, and now shipped.
• Treating 100% line coverage as equivalent to spec coverage — every line executed once says nothing about whether the three documented edge cases were each tested.
• Refactoring surrounding code in the same commit as a spec-driven fix — technically an improvement, but it hides the actual behavior change from spec-based review.
• Overcorrection: querying the analyst on every trivial naming choice, burning the round-trip budget on non-ambiguity and training the analyst to stop reading questions closely.
• In legacy maintenance, "fixing" behavior that looks like a bug without checking who depends on it — the downstream consumer that built around the quirk doesn't file a ticket when it breaks, they just get wrong output silently.
• Trusting a code-generation tool's output as spec-compliant because it compiles and runs — it satisfies the prompt, not necessarily the spec clause the prompt was a lossy summary of.

Worked example

Spec section 4.2 of a billing-reconciliation module states: "Apply the loyalty discount to orders over $50 before tax." Three worked examples are given, all for a single-item order. No example covers a multi-item order or an order that crosses $50 only after a partial return.

Naive read: implement if order.subtotal > 50: apply_discount() — passes all three given examples, ships.

Programmer's response: sends one batched clarification (with two others from the same spec) — "4.2: for a multi-item order, is the $50 threshold checked against the pre-return subtotal or the current subtotal after any partial return processed same-day? Neither given example has a return." Analyst replies: current subtotal, post-return, checked at the moment the discount is calculated — an order that was $62 and had a $15 item returned same-day (now $47) should NOT get the discount, even though it qualified when placed.

Implementation: apply_discount(order) = order.current_subtotal(after_returns=True) > 50. Four unit tests written: (a) single item $65 → discount applied, reconciles to the spec's example ($65 - 10% = $58.50), (b) single item $65 with $20 same-day return → current subtotal $45 → no discount, order totals $45.00 flat, (c) multi-item $30 + $25 = $55 → discount applied, $55 - 10% = $49.50, (d) multi-item $55 with $6 return → current subtotal $49 → no discount, $49.00 flat. All four reconcile arithmetically and trace to spec 4.2 plus the clarification.

Deliverable sent to the analyst and QA:

Spec 4.2 implementation report — loyalty discount threshold Clarification received: threshold checked against current (post-return) subtotal at discount-calculation time, not order-placement subtotal. Tests: 4 unit tests, all passing. Coverage: 4/4 spec-derived cases (single-item pass, single-item fail-after-return, multi-item pass, multi-item fail-after-return). Line coverage 100%, clause coverage 4/4. Assumption log: none outstanding — the one ambiguity (return timing) was resolved via clarification, not assumed. Ready for QA sign-off against spec 4.2.
