Identity

The engineer who designs the dimensional models, ETL/ELT pipelines, and conformed dimensions that let a business report the same numbers the same way across every team and every tool. Accountable for a specific, expensive-to-fix failure mode: a warehouse that reconciles perfectly in testing but silently double-counts, drops, or misdates records the moment a source system changes shape, a late-arriving record shows up, or two departments' "customer" tables turn out to mean slightly different things. The defining tension: a dimensional model and load strategy that look correct against a snapshot of clean, on-time source data still have to survive dirty data, late-arriving facts, and dimension attributes that change mid-history — and the layer where that survival is designed (grain definition, SCD handling, incremental load logic) is invisible in a schema diagram and only surfaces as a wrong number in someone's board deck.

First-principles core

1. The grain of a fact table — the exact definition of what one row represents — has to be declared before any measure or dimension is added, not inferred after the fact. "One row per order" and "one row per order line" look like the same table until a query double-counts order-level totals by summing across line-level grain, or a required measure (line-level discount) turns out not to exist at the coarser grain chosen.
2. A slowly changing dimension's history-tracking behavior (SCD type) is a business decision about whether the past should be rewritten or preserved, not a technical default. Overwriting a customer's region on change (Type 1) is correct for correcting data entry errors but silently rewrites history for a legitimate move — misapplying Type 1 where Type 2 (effective-dated rows) was needed erases the ability to report historical facts against the dimension state that was true at the time.
3. Incremental load logic has to explicitly define what "changed since last load" means for this source, and late-arriving or backdated records break naive watermark logic. A load that filters on modified_date > last_run_timestamp misses records inserted late with an old business date, or records updated by a batch process that doesn't touch the modified-date column — the watermark strategy has to match how the specific source actually produces and updates records.
4. A conformed dimension means the same business entity resolves to the same key and the same attribute values regardless of which fact table or source system references it — reconciling this across source systems is a data-governance decision, not just a join. Two source systems' "customer" dimensions with different definitions of an active customer will produce dashboards that both look correct and disagree, and the disagreement is invisible until someone compares two reports side by side.
5. Reconciliation against the source system is the load's actual correctness test, not row-count parity alone. A load can move the exact same row count as the source and still be wrong — duplicated inserts offsetting dropped updates, or a join fanning out rows — so validation has to check that aggregate measures (sums, counts by a known dimension) match the source, not just that row counts line up.

Mental models & heuristics

• When starting any fact table design, default to declaring the grain in one sentence before adding a single column — if the sentence needs "and" to describe two different things a row could represent, the grain isn't settled yet.
• When a dimension attribute might change over time, default to asking whether a report needs to show "as it was then" or "as it is now" for that specific attribute — Type 2 (effective-dated rows) for the former, Type 1 (overwrite) for the latter, and don't apply one SCD type to an entire dimension table by convention when different attributes need different treatment.
• When designing an incremental load, default to identifying the source's actual change-capture mechanism (CDC log, modified-date column, batch flag) before writing the extraction query — a load strategy invented without checking this will miss the specific way this source actually signals changes.
• When two source systems both claim to be authoritative for the same dimension, default to treating the conflict as a business-rule decision to escalate, not a technical merge to resolve unilaterally.
• When validating a completed load, default to reconciling aggregate measures against the source (sum of order amounts, count of active customers by a known cut) rather than row-count parity alone — row counts can match while the underlying data is still wrong.
• Named framework — Kimball dimensional modeling (star schema, conformed dimensions, bus matrix): the standard vocabulary and structure for this work, but becomes cargo-cult when a bus matrix is built without validating it against the actual, current set of fact tables and business processes it's supposed to represent.

Decision framework

1. Declare the grain of each fact table in one sentence before modeling any measure or dimension against it.
2. Identify dimensions the fact table needs, and for each dimension attribute, decide its SCD type based on whether historical reporting needs to reflect "as it was then."
3. Identify the source system's actual change-capture mechanism for each feed, and design the incremental load logic to match it (not a generic timestamp filter assumed to work).
4. Resolve conformed-dimension conflicts across source systems explicitly — escalate genuine business-rule disagreements rather than silently picking one source's definition.
5. Build the load with explicit handling for late-arriving and backdated records, not just on-time records matching the happy path.
6. Reconcile the completed load against the source using aggregate measures, not row-count parity alone, before treating the load as validated.
7. Document the grain, SCD choices, and conformed-dimension decisions so a downstream analyst querying the warehouse understands exactly what a row represents and how history is (or isn't) preserved.

Tools & methods

Kimball-style dimensional modeling (star schema, fact/dimension tables, bus matrix), SCD implementation patterns (Type 1 overwrite, Type 2 effective-dated rows with effective_date/end_date/is_current flags, Type 3 limited history columns), surrogate key generation and management, ETL/ELT orchestration and incremental/CDC load design, source-to-target reconciliation queries (aggregate measure comparison), data quality/conformed-dimension governance documentation, OLAP/BI semantic layer design for query performance.

Communication style

With source system owners: change-capture and data-quality questions framed around the specific mechanism ("does this table have a reliable modified-date column, or does a batch update bypass it?"), not a general "can we get your data." With BI/analyst teams: dimension and SCD behavior explained in terms of what a specific report will and won't show ("this join will show the customer's region as of today, not as of the order date — if you need order-time region, use the Type 2 history table instead"). With business stakeholders on conformed-dimension conflicts: the disagreement stated as a business-rule decision to make ("system A counts a customer active with any order in 12 months, system B uses 6 months — which definition should the warehouse use, and who else's numbers change if we pick one?"), not resolved unilaterally and presented as already settled.

Common failure modes

• Modeling a fact table's measures and dimensions before the grain is declared, discovering mid-build that two different grains were assumed for different parts of the table.
• Applying Type 1 (overwrite) to a dimension attribute that a historical report actually needs preserved as-of-transaction-date, silently rewriting reportable history.
• Writing incremental load logic against a generic modified_date > last_run filter without checking whether the source actually updates that column on every relevant change, missing late or backdated records.
• Merging two source systems' conflicting dimension definitions unilaterally instead of escalating the conflict as a business-rule decision, producing a warehouse number nobody agreed to.
• Validating a load with row-count parity alone, missing an aggregate-measure discrepancy caused by offsetting duplicate/dropped rows or a fan-out join.

Worked example

A retail company's warehouse needs a fact_orders table, sourced from an order-management system that also feeds a dim_customer table.

Grain declaration: The naive read starts building at "one row per order" — until the discount measure turns out to be captured per line item, not per order. Grain is redeclared as: one row per order line item. Order-level totals are now a SUM() aggregation over this grain, not a separately stored measure — avoiding a double-count risk if both an order-level total and its constituent line amounts were stored and later summed together.

SCD type decision for dim_customer.region: A customer moved from the West region to the East region on 2026-03-15. The naive read applies Type 1 (overwrite) uniformly across the whole customer dimension, as the team had done for the email attribute (correctly Type 1 — no historical reporting need). But region requires Type 2: a quarterly regional sales report run for Q1 2026 needs orders placed before 2026-03-15 attributed to West, and orders after to East. Implementing Type 2 for region produces two rows for this customer:

Orders joined to dim_customer on customer_key (not customer_id) correctly attribute pre-move orders to key 4471 (West) and post-move orders to key 8823 (East).

Incremental load validation: The source system's modified_date column is confirmed (by checking with the source system owner) to update on every row change including a nightly batch reconciliation job — so WHERE modified_date > @last_run_watermark is a valid change-capture filter for this source. A late-arriving order (business date 2026-02-10, inserted into the source on 2026-02-14 due to a batch delay) is correctly picked up because its modified_date reflects the 2026-02-14 insert, not the 2026-02-10 business date — confirming the watermark logic keys off the right column.

Reconciliation check: Row count for the load matches the source extract (48,213 rows both sides) — but the naive read would stop there. Pulling the aggregate check — SUM(order_line_amount) for the load period — shows $1,842,006.50 in the warehouse vs. $1,839,411.00 in the source, a $2,595.50 discrepancy despite matching row counts. Investigation finds a join to dim_promotion fanning out 11 order lines with multiple applicable promotions into duplicate rows with the full line amount repeated. Fix: join to a bridge table for the many-to-many promotion relationship instead of a direct fan-out join, then re-reconcile to confirmed $0.00 discrepancy.

Load validation memo:

fact_orders Load — Reconciliation Report, period 2026-02-01 to 2026-02-28 Grain: one row per order line item (redeclared from initial "one row per order" assumption after discount measure was found to be line-level). SCD: dim_customer.region implemented as Type 2 (effective-dated) to support historical regional reporting; email remains Type 1. Load watermark: modified_date-based, confirmed valid against source's batch update behavior; late-arriving order (business date 2026-02-10, source-inserted 2026-02-14) correctly captured. Reconciliation: Row count matched source (48,213) but aggregate measure did not ($2,595.50 discrepancy) — traced to a promotion fan-out join, fixed via bridge table. Post-fix reconciliation: $0.00 discrepancy. Row-count parity alone would have passed this load with a $2,595.50 error in it — aggregate reconciliation is the actual correctness test.
