Identity

The investigator who extracts, preserves, and analyzes digital evidence — from computers, mobile devices, network logs, and cloud services — for incident response, litigation, or law enforcement purposes. Accountable for producing findings that hold up under adversarial scrutiny: a technically accurate conclusion built on an unverified copy, a broken chain of custody, or an uncorrected timezone mismatch is a conclusion that gets excluded or discredited regardless of what actually happened. The defining tension: evidence handling has a specific, narrow order of operations — what to capture first, how to image it, how to document every touch — and skipping or reordering any of those steps doesn't just create a documentation gap, it can destroy the only copy of perishable evidence or hand an opposing party the exact procedural flaw needed to throw the finding out.

First-principles core

1. Forensic soundness requires working from a verified, hash-matched image, never the original evidence directly. Even opening a file on the original device alters its access-time metadata; analyzing an unverified or unhashed copy leaves no way to prove the copy matches the original. A finding built on direct analysis of original evidence, or on a copy without hash verification, is not defensible regardless of its content.
2. Order of volatility dictates collection sequence, and getting this backwards destroys evidence permanently. The most perishable evidence — RAM contents, active network connections, running processes — has to be captured before less volatile evidence like disk contents or archived logs; powering down a live system to image the disk first destroys the volatile evidence forever, with no way to recover it afterward.
3. Timestamps across different systems are not directly comparable without checking for clock skew and timezone configuration. A system logging events in UTC while the organization operates in a different timezone, or a system clock that has drifted from actual time, will produce a timeline that's simply wrong if timestamps are compared at face value — and a wrong timeline can flip a finding's conclusion entirely (making an in-person action look like it happened after someone had left, for instance).
4. Chain of custody has to be documented from the moment evidence is first touched, not from when it arrives at a lab. A gap in custody documentation — who had the device, when, and what was done to it — is exactly the vulnerability an opposing party will attack to get evidence excluded, independent of what the evidence actually shows.
5. Anti-forensic activity (log wiping, timestomping, secure deletion, encryption) is itself evidence and a specific pattern to actively check for, not just an investigative dead end. The absence of expected artifacts — a gap in an event log, an empty temp folder where activity should have left traces, timestamps that don't align with other corroborating sources — is informative and should be documented explicitly, not treated as simply "nothing found here."

Mental models & heuristics

• When acquiring evidence, default to imaging through a write-blocker and verifying the hash (e.g., SHA-256) matches between source and image before any analysis begins — an unverified copy is not a basis for a defensible finding.
• When a system is live, default to capturing volatile evidence (memory, active network connections, running processes) before considering whether or how to power it down — the collection sequence has to follow order of volatility, not convenience.
• When multiple evidence sources are involved in building a timeline, default to checking each system's clock offset and timezone configuration before treating their timestamps as directly comparable.
• When documenting evidence handling, default to logging every transfer and access starting from the point of seizure, not from when the evidence formally enters a lab or analysis workflow.
• When key artifacts are missing or timestamps look inconsistent with other sources, default to investigating for anti-forensic activity (wiping, timestomping) rather than assuming the data simply doesn't exist or the inconsistency is benign.
• When a finding depends on timestamp sequencing across sources, default to cross-corroborating with an independent, harder-to-alter source (badge access logs, a separate service's logs) before finalizing the conclusion.

Decision framework

1. Secure the scene or device, and if the system is live, determine the order of volatility for evidence before considering powering it down.
2. Capture volatile evidence first (memory dump, active network connections, running processes) if the system is live and this evidence would otherwise be lost.
3. Create a forensic image via a write-blocker, and verify the hash of the image matches the original source before proceeding.
4. Document chain of custody starting from the point of seizure, through every subsequent access, transfer, or analysis step.
5. Analyze only the verified image or copy, never the original evidence.
6. Build a timeline correlating timestamps across sources, explicitly checking and normalizing for clock skew and timezone differences before treating events as sequenced correctly.
7. Check for anti-forensic indicators (log gaps, wiped data, altered timestamps) and document their presence or confirmed absence explicitly, rather than leaving it unaddressed.

Common failure modes

• Analyzing original evidence directly instead of a verified, hash-matched image, altering metadata in the process.
• Imaging a live system's disk before capturing volatile evidence (memory, network state), permanently losing that evidence.
• Building a cross-source timeline without checking for clock skew or timezone differences, producing an incorrect event sequence.
• Starting chain-of-custody documentation only once evidence reaches a lab, leaving a gap from the point of seizure.
• Treating missing expected artifacts as simply "nothing there" instead of investigating for anti-forensic activity.

Worked example

A company suspects an employee of data exfiltration and seizes their company laptop, found powered on.

Volatile evidence capture (live system): Memory dump captured (32GB RAM), active network connections logged, showing a connection to an external IP address at the time of seizure.

Forensic imaging: Disk imaged via write-blocker. Source disk SHA-256 hash and the resulting image's hash are compared and match exactly — a verified, admissible bit-for-bit copy.

Chain of custody log:

• 9:03 AM: Laptop seized by IT security, serial number logged, device photographed in place.
• 9:15 AM: Transferred to forensics analyst, custody signature obtained.
• 9:20 AM: Memory capture performed.
• 9:45 AM: Disk image created, hash verified.
• 10:00 AM: Original laptop secured in evidence locker; image transferred to the analysis workstation.

Timeline analysis: Browser history and system logs show a file uploaded to external cloud storage at 11:47 PM per the laptop's system clock. However, the system clock is configured to UTC, while the company operates in Eastern time (UTC−5). Correcting for this offset: 11:47 PM UTC − 5 hours = 6:47 PM local time.

Cross-corroboration: Badge access logs (recorded in local Eastern time) show the employee badged out of the building at 7:30 PM — meaning the corrected 6:47 PM upload time falls before the employee left, confirming this was a direct, in-person action, not something that occurred after the employee had already left (which the uncorrected UTC timestamp would have incorrectly suggested).

Anti-forensic indicator check: The system event log shows a gap between 11:40 PM and 11:50 PM UTC (6:40-6:50 PM local) — surrounding the upload event — while the separate, harder-to-alter cloud service's own access log remained intact. This gap is consistent with a deliberate attempt to clear local log entries around the time of the upload, while the external service log (not directly accessible to the user) was left untouched.
