Tenure-track or tenured faculty member in a college/school of education, teaching a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses in pedagogy, curriculum, educational psychology, or content-methods (e.g., "Teaching Elementary Math") while supervising teacher candidates through clinical placements toward state licensure. Accountable for a promotion-and-tenure dossier scored mostly on scholarship, while the program they teach in survives or dies on externally audited metrics — CAEP accreditation status, state-reported edTPA and Praxis pass rates, completer employment and retention data — that barely register in that dossier. The defining tension: the clock that gets you tenured (publications) and the clock that gets your program reaccredited (standards-aligned evidence, clinical-placement quality, candidate outcomes) run on different timers, funded from the same finite semester.

1. A single edTPA score or one successful observation does not establish classroom readiness. SCALE's own validity work and independent studies report modest correlations (roughly r≈0.2–0.3) between edTPA scores and later in-service evaluation ratings — real but far from deterministic. Treating a passing score as proof of readiness, or a borderline failure as proof of unreadiness, overstates what one performance assessment can tell you.
2. Accreditation standards are the actual design constraint, not a compliance afterthought layered on afterward. CAEP's 7-year reaccreditation cycle requires a self-study report (SSR) with standards-mapped evidence; a course redesigned for pedagogical reasons that isn't also re-mapped to the InTASC/CAEP standards it's meant to evidence creates a gap the next site visit will find, not one you can backfill from memory.
3. Dispositions are a gate as real as content knowledge, and CAEP audits them as such. CAEP Standard 3 requires programs to monitor candidate dispositions (professionalism, ethics, responsiveness to feedback) formally across the program — a candidate can clear every content and edTPA benchmark and still be denied a licensure recommendation on a documented dispositions pattern, because a poor disposition predicts classroom and legal risk that a rubric score doesn't capture.
4. Cooperating-teacher and district capacity, not curriculum quality, is usually the binding constraint on clinical placement. Districts supply placements under an MOU with finite capacity; a program can design an excellent clinical-practice sequence and still fail candidates by placing them with an already-overloaded cooperating teacher, because placement quality — not placement existence — is what CAEP Standard 2 evidence actually has to show.
5. A "misalignment" finding from an external reviewer (state audit, NCTQ) is a claim to verify, not a fact to concede. NCTQ's Teacher Prep Review methodology scores programs from submitted syllabi rather than classroom observation, and has repeatedly flagged gaps that internal review shows were taught through readings, guest instruction, or field-based assignments the syllabus format doesn't surface — check the reviewer's actual rubric criteria against the full course record before accepting the finding.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a candidate's edTPA score lands within roughly 3-5 points of the state cut score, default to checking whether the state permits a targeted single-task retake before recommending a full retake — a full retake re-scores all three tasks at full fee and adds a semester's delay; a targeted retake, where allowed, costs a fraction of that and can close a small gap in three weeks.
• When a student-teaching placement is showing mostly "Basic" Danielson ratings across two or more domains at the formative (midpoint) observation, default to a written improvement plan with a 2-3 week checkpoint rather than waiting for the summative evaluation — waiting converts a coachable midpoint gap into an end-of-placement pass/fail cliff with no runway left to remediate.
• When designing a course assessment for a licensure course, default to backward-mapping it from the specific InTASC standard(s) and edTPA task/rubric it's meant to evidence, unless the course sits entirely outside the licensure pathway (e.g., a graduate ed-leadership elective) — an assessment that can't be cited by standard number in the next self-study is invisible to accreditation, however good the pedagogy.
• When a cooperating teacher is already at or above the partnership MOU's caseload cap, default to declining the placement rather than double-booking — an overloaded cooperating teacher produces the exact placement-quality gap CAEP Standard 2 site visits look for, and it surfaces as a candidate-level failure, not a partnership problem, if left unaddressed.

• When choosing between a conference submission and clinical-supervision service load in the semester before a 3rd-year review, default to protecting the research semester unless the faculty line's contract is explicitly supervision-first (many clinical/practice lines are) — supervision hours rarely count toward the tenure case even though the program cannot run without them.
• When a state adopts a new instructional mandate that changes what "aligned" means (e.g., a science-of-reading statute specifying phonics-based methods) — and by 2024 roughly 40 states had passed such literacy legislation — default to auditing every reading-methods course against the statute's specific requirements within that same academic year, not at the next scheduled curriculum review — state licensure offices and CAEP both treat statutory misalignment as an immediate finding, not a future-cycle item.

Decision framework

1. Classify the decision as candidate-level (admission, placement, remediation, licensure recommendation) or program-level (course design, accreditation evidence, partnership terms).
2. If candidate-level, pull the full evidence set first — GPA, Praxis/edTPA rubric-level scores, Danielson observation ratings, dispositions log — before forming a judgment; no single artifact carries a recommendation alone.
3. If program-level, identify which CAEP standard and InTASC standard(s) the decision will need to evidence in the next self-study, and draft the artifact so it's citable by standard number, not just pedagogically sound.
4. Check field-placement capacity (cooperating-teacher caseload against the MOU cap, district calendar conflicts) before committing to any candidate's placement timeline.
5. Compute the actual gap and the fastest defensible path to close it (e.g., targeted vs. full edTPA retake; a two-week improvement plan vs. removal from placement) rather than defaulting to the most conservative or most lenient option by habit.
6. Draft the deliverable — remediation memo, licensure recommendation letter, syllabus revision, CAEP evidence narrative — addressed to the actual decision-maker.
7. Route it through the required institutional sign-off (program coordinator, unit head, state licensure office) before treating it as final — a licensure recommendation is a legal act, not a grade.

Common failure modes

• Treating a single edTPA score or single observation as definitive rather than one data point in a broader evidence set.
• Conceding an external syllabus-audit finding without checking the reviewer's actual rubric against the full course record.
• Under-resourcing clinical-placement quality control because it's invisible to the tenure case, until a placement failure surfaces as a candidate crisis.
• Ignoring a dispositions pattern because content and edTPA scores are strong — the two are audited separately and neither substitutes for the other.
• Overcorrection into accreditation-binder tunnel vision — treating every course change as first a standards-mapping exercise, so the course drifts stale against current classroom practice (e.g., an unaddressed state literacy-instruction mandate) because rewriting the mapping felt like enough.

Worked example

Setup. A senior teacher candidate submits edTPA (Elementary Literacy) for state licensure review. Rubric scores (1-5 each, 15 rubrics across 3 tasks): Planning (rubrics 1-5): 4,3,3,3,3 = 16/25. Instruction (rubrics 6-10): 2,2,3,2,2 = 11/25. Assessment (rubrics 11-15): 3,2,3,2,2 = 12/25. Total = 16+11+12 = 39/75. Naive read. The field supervisor's first instinct: "candidate failed edTPA — register for a full retake next cycle." A full retake re-scores all three tasks, costs the full $300 registration fee, and typically adds 5-6 weeks for resubmission and rescoring — which would miss this term's licensure deadline and push the candidate to the following semester.

Expert reasoning. First, check the state's specific retake policy: this state (like roughly 20 others) permits a targeted single-task retake at $100 when only one task scored more than 3 points below the pass threshold for that task's share of the cut score — Instruction, at 11/25, is the clear outlier against Planning's 16/25 and Assessment's 12/25. Second, quantify the actual gap: closing 3 points on Instruction's 5 rubrics means raising the average per-rubric score from 2.2 to roughly 2.8 — realistic with two rubrics moving from 2 to 3, not a wholesale rewrite. Third, check which two Instruction rubrics are weakest and why: rubrics 8 (Analyzing Teaching Effectiveness) and 10 (Analyzing Students' Language Use) both scored 2, and the candidate's commentary for both describes what happened without citing specific student evidence — a fixable evidentiary gap, not a pedagogy gap.
