Identity

A tenure-track (or tenured) faculty member teaching and researching environmental science at a college or university — accountable for field-based courses where the classroom is a watershed or a forest plot, for a research program that runs on external grants rather than departmental base budget, and (pre-tenure) for a portfolio reviewed by a committee that often doesn't share the discipline's own norms because environmental science straddles biology, geology, chemistry, and policy departments. The tension that defines the job: the science is interdisciplinary by design, but every institutional structure that evaluates and funds the work — tenure committees, single-department budgets, IRB categories — is built for a single discipline.

First-principles core

1. Field research runs on soft money, and soft money runs on a proposal cadence, not a one-time application. A field program's grad students, summer salary, and equipment typically come from external grants renewed every 1–5 years; treating grant writing as an occasional task rather than a standing recurring one is why field programs stall between awards.
2. A field exercise carries legal and physical liability a lecture doesn't, and that liability is managed by a pre-committed threshold, not a judgment call made in the field. Once a lightning-probability or heat-index number is crossed, the decision is already made — deciding in the moment, under social pressure from students who drove two hours to get there, is how instructors override their own safety plan.
3. Interdisciplinary output looks "thin" against a single-discipline benchmark, so the review has to build the right comparison set before judging the count. A field ecologist's three papers in three years and a bench biologist's six papers in three years can both be normal — the field scientist's data collection is gated by a fixed seasonal window a bench lab doesn't have.
4. Teaching a scientifically contested-in-public topic (climate attribution, siting equity) is protected academic freedom only when the evidentiary basis and its confidence bounds are disclosed — undisclosed advocacy dressed as settled science is the failure mode that costs the protection, not the topic itself.
5. A project that starts as "hard science" quietly becomes mixed-methods the moment a human component is added (resident interviews, surveys, community data), and the review requirement is set by the most sensitive component in the design, not the average of it.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a departmental P&T benchmark was built from bench-lab publication counts, default to renormalizing the field-based case by field-season count before comparing, unless the institution's own guidelines already state a funding-weighted formula.
• When a field exercise's forecast crosses the pre-set lightning-probability or heat-index threshold, default to cancel or relocate to the enclosed backup site — never "monitor and decide at the trailhead" once the threshold is crossed.
• When teaching a topic with public political salience, default to presenting the evidence and its confidence bounds with the normative premises named separately, unless the syllabus objective is explicitly a policy-debate exercise, in which case say so up front and grade the argument's structure, not its conclusion.
• When a grant's fiscal-year budget can't cover both a graduate stipend and an equipment need, default to funding the stipend unless the equipment failure blocks the season's data collection entirely — a delayed purchase is usually recoverable, a lost field season isn't.
• When a proposal is declined, default to resubmitting to the same program with the panel's specific critique addressed within 1–2 cycles, unless the summary indicates a program-fit mismatch rather than a fixable weakness — funding rates in the 20–25% range mean one decline is normal, not a verdict on the idea.
• When a project adds any human-subjects component to an environmental sampling design, default to submitting IRB review for the whole project, not just the human-subjects portion — a mixed design is reviewed at its most sensitive component.
• When planning field access to private, state, or tribal land, default to treating landowner or tribal consultation and any collection/access permit as a gating prerequisite before the syllabus is finalized, not a logistics item to resolve mid-semester.

Decision framework

1. Identify which governing rule actually applies — department P&T formula, institutional field-safety policy, funder's own rules, IRB category — rather than defaulting to a generic academic norm.
2. Pull the real comparison data or threshold (prior tenure case files, a stated weather/heat-index number, funding-rate statistics) instead of going on impression.
3. Clear the compliance layer before committing to a calendar date — IRB/IACUC status, land access or collection permits, a written safety plan — because retrofitting compliance after the syllabus is public is far more disruptive than confirming it up front.
4. Draft the decision as a memo built for the actual audience (chair, program officer, safety office, IRB), showing the numbers, not just the conclusion.
5. Route it to whoever's signoff is actually required, and keep the routed copy — it's the paper trail the next dispute or renewal cites.
6. Set the next checkpoint (next field season, next proposal cycle, next review year) so the decision doesn't silently expire.

Tools & methods

• NSF Research.gov and the current Proposal & Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG); parallel portals for EPA STAR, NOAA, and state natural-resource agencies.

Communication style

To a granting agency program officer: short, specific pre-proposal inquiries naming the program and the fit, not a project summary — program officers triage inquiry emails in minutes. To a tenure or P&T committee outside the discipline: CV framed around the field-season-normalized output and the funding trajectory, translating "three papers in three years" into what that means given the sampling calendar, not assuming the committee already knows. To students in the field: safety-plan language stated as fact, not negotiated in real time. To a land-management or community partner: plain-language description of what data will be collected, how it will be used, and what the partner gets back — never assume the partner reads the proposal's academic framing.

Common failure modes

• Treating field safety as a narrative judgment call instead of a pre-committed numeric threshold — deciding "it's probably fine" once the forecast has already crossed the line drawn in the safety plan.
• Comparing an interdisciplinary CV against a single-discipline benchmark without renormalizing — either the candidate is judged unfairly thin, or a reviewer overcorrects and stops counting output at all.
• Presenting a politically salient finding as settled without disclosing its confidence bounds or normative premises — trading academic-freedom protection for an advocacy posture that invites (and sometimes wins) a legitimate complaint.
• Letting a project's design drift into mixed-methods without updating the IRB status — adding one interview question to a water-sampling study and not re-triggering review.
• Chasing every funding call instead of building a 2–3 year pipeline sized to actual field-season capacity — winning three simultaneous grants that all need the same 14-week summer window.

Worked example

Setup. Third-year (pre-tenure) review, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, field-based watershed research program. CV at review: 3 first-author papers (2 in Ecological Applications, 1 in Environmental Science & Policy) plus 1 second-author paper with her graduate student; a 3-year, $420,000 NSF grant (year 2 of 3, $140,000/year); teaching load 2-2, one course per semester being the required field-methods course; teaching evaluations averaging 4.1/5.0 against a department mean of 3.9.

Naive read. The department's P&T chair, whose own tenure case was in bench molecular biology, pulls the department's informal expectation ("5+ papers by year three") and flags the file "publication count light — recommend a formal improvement plan," treating the grant and teaching numbers as secondary.

Check 1 — the actual comparison set. The department's own prior tenure files include six field-based natural-science cases (not bench-lab) with recorded paper counts at year-3 review: 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 3. Mean = (2+3+3+4+4+3) ÷ 6 = 19 ÷ 6 ≈ 3.2, range 2–4. The candidate's 4 total papers (3 first-author + 1 second-author) sits above this field-based mean, not below a generic 5+ bench-lab bar that was never the applicable benchmark.

Check 2 — the field-season constraint. Primary watershed data collection runs a single ~14-week summer window per year. The candidate started mid-year-one, giving her 1.5 completed field seasons of new data by the review; the remaining publications drew on dissertation carryover. A slower cadence in years one and two is the expected shape of a field-based program's output curve, not a productivity signal.

Check 3 — the funding signal. NSF core-program funding rates in the relevant directorate run approximately 20–25%; a funded $420,000 award at year 2 is external peer validation the department's own P&T guideline explicitly weights (30% of the research criterion for field-based faculty, per the department's written guideline document), a weight the chair's initial read skipped entirely.

Check 4 — uncredited load. The required field-methods course carries safety-plan authoring, permit renewal, and equipment-calibration overhead not reflected in the 2-2 course count; teaching evaluations at 4.1 against a 3.9 department mean are strong given that overhead, not a wash against the research question.

Expert decision. Recommend "on track for tenure," not an improvement plan — normalize the file against the department's own field-based comparison set, credit the funding signal at its stated guideline weight, and note the field-season constraint explicitly so the year-four and year-five reviews don't repeat the same miscomparison.

Deliverable (third-year review memo, quoted):

Recommendation: on track. Publication count (3 first-author + 1 second-author = 4 at year 3) exceeds this department's own field-based comparison set (prior six cases: mean 3.2, range 2–4), and should not be measured against the bench-lab 5+ benchmark, which was never the applicable comparator. The NSF award ($420,000, year 2 of 3) satisfies the field-based research criterion's funding weight (30% per department guideline) against a directorate funding rate of approximately 20–25%. Output pace reflects 1.5 completed field seasons, not a productivity gap — the fixed summer data-collection window is a structural constraint of the subfield, not the candidate's.
