5. A pattern validated only at the base size doesn't guarantee correct fit at the extremes of the graded range. Grade rules are based on standard measurement progressions that may not perfectly scale for every body type at every size — the smallest and largest sizes should be spot-checked with actual sample garments, not assumed correct from the grading math alone.

1. Confirm the size chart's specific measurement increments between each adjacent size pair, not assuming a single uniform grade rule for the whole range.
2. Develop the base/sample size pattern with correctly fitted ease allowance, verified before grading begins.
3. Create grade rules for each pattern point based on the actual body measurement progression at that specific size range, applying different rules where the size chart's increments differ.
4. Grade the pattern across the full size range, ensuring internal details move proportionally with their related body points.
5. Verify ease allowance distribution remains consistent at each graded size, not just at the base size.
6. Sample and fit-test at least the smallest and largest sizes in the graded range, not just the base size.
7. Document the grade rules used at each size break and any fit-test results/adjustments for the pattern record.

Communication style

Pattern grade specifications state the specific increment applied at each pattern point for each size break, never "graded standard." Fit-test escalation for an extreme size cites the specific measurement/fit issue found and which size break's grade rule may need adjustment, not "the largest size doesn't fit right."

Common failure modes

• Applying a single uniform grade rule increment across an entire size range when the actual size chart has non-uniform increments at certain breaks, producing progressively worse fit at sizes distant from the base.
• Growing only the pattern's outline while leaving ease distribution unchanged from the base size, distorting proportional fit at extreme sizes.
• Leaving internal pattern details at a fixed position during grading instead of moving them proportionally with their related body points.
• Assuming a pattern validated only at the base size will fit correctly at all graded sizes without spot-checking the range extremes.
• Having learned to distrust uniform grade rules, over-customizing increments at every size break even where the size chart's increments are genuinely uniform, adding unnecessary complexity to the grade rule table.

Worked example

A size chart shows 2-inch bust increments between sizes 4–16, but compressed 1.5-inch increments between sizes 16–18 and 18–20. The pattern is developed and fitted at base size 10.

Naive read: Apply the same 2-inch-per-size grade rule uniformly from size 10 through size 20 (5 size steps), since that's the increment validated at the base size range.

Expert reasoning: The actual size chart shows a smaller 1.5-inch increment for the 16→18 and 18→20 transitions. Grading from size 10 to size 20 spans 5 steps (10→12→14→16→18→20). The correct cumulative growth is 2+2+2 (three standard 2-inch steps, 10→16) + 1.5+1.5 (two compressed steps, 16→20) = 6 + 3 = 9 inches total. Using a uniform 2-inch-per-step rule across all 5 steps instead would produce 2 × 5 = 10 inches of growth — 1 inch more than the size chart's actual target, an 11.1% overshoot relative to the correct 9-inch total growth (1 ÷ 9).

Deliverable — grade rule specification note:

Base size 10, grading to size 20 (5 size steps). Size chart shows 2-inch bust increments for steps 10→12, 12→14, 14→16 (3 steps = 6 inches), then compressed 1.5-inch increments for steps 16→18 and 18→20 (2 steps = 3 inches) — total correct growth 6+3=9 inches from size 10 to size 20. Naive uniform 2-inch-per-step rule applied across all 5 steps would produce 2×5=10 inches of growth — 1 inch (11.1%) more than the size chart's actual target. Apply the standard 2-inch grade rule for steps 10→16, and the compressed 1.5-inch grade rule specifically for steps 16→18 and 18→20, to match the actual size chart rather than extending the standard-range increment across the plus-size transition.
