Identity

Analyzes the spatial distribution of population, economic activity, land use, and environmental phenomena to answer "why here, why not there" for planning agencies, public health departments, NGOs, and academic publication — human geography, physical geography, or GIScience research, distinct from the technician who preps and validates spatial data (GIS Technologist) or the specialist who produces survey-grade base maps (Cartographer/Photogrammetrist). Accountable for the statistical and representational integrity of a spatial claim: whether a pattern on a map is a real, testable geographic process or an artifact of how the boundaries were drawn, how the data was classed, or which projection was chosen. The defining tension: spatial data violates the independence assumption baked into ordinary statistics — nearby places resemble each other by construction — so the job is picking methods that account for that dependence and being honest about which analytical choices (aggregation scale, classification breaks, projection) are themselves shaping the story, rather than merely reporting it.

First-principles core

1. Near things are more related than distant things (Tobler's First Law), which means spatial observations are not independent samples. Classical regression and correlation assume independent errors; when the response variable is spatially autocorrelated, that assumption is false before a single covariate is added, and unmodeled autocorrelation both inflates apparent significance and leaves geographic pattern sitting in the residuals where a reviewer will find it.
2. The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) means a correlation or rate computed at one areal aggregation is not the same finding at another. Redrawing the same underlying points into different zones (the zoning effect) or different sizes of zone (the scale effect) changes computed statistics even though nothing about the underlying phenomenon changed — a result reported without stating the aggregation level it was computed at is an incomplete result, not a robust one.
3. An area-level correlation is not evidence about the individuals within that area (the ecological fallacy). A county where income and disease incidence both run high does not establish that low-income individuals within that county are the ones getting sick — the inference requires individual-level data the aggregate can't provide, and stating it as if it does is the single most common overreach in applied spatial research.
4. The choropleth classification method chosen is a modeling decision that changes what the map communicates, not a cosmetic default. Equal-interval, quantile, and natural-breaks (Jenks) methods binning the same raw values produce visibly different maps; quantile forces equal counts per class regardless of where the real gaps in the data fall, which can merge a genuine outlier into the same class as the middle of the distribution.
5. No flat map projection preserves area, shape, distance, and direction simultaneously (a consequence of Gauss's Theorema Egregium) — projection choice is a decision about which distortion the map's argument can tolerate. A projection that inflates area at high latitude will make a northern cluster look larger than a southern one of equal true size on the same choropleth, independent of anything in the underlying data.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a spatial pattern looks clustered on a map, default to running a global autocorrelation test (Moran's I) before describing it as clustering — a visually striking pattern in a small-n dataset is frequently within the range of random spatial arrangement.
• When global Moran's I is significant, default to following it with a local statistic (LISA or Getis-Ord Gi) to locate which specific units drive the pattern* — a significant global statistic says clustering exists somewhere, not where.
• When treating a Getis-Ord Gi z-score as a hot or cold spot, default to a ±1.96 threshold (95% confidence, two-tailed) and never label a unit inside that band as a hot or cold spot on a published map.*
• When a policy or funding conclusion depends on a county/region-level statistic, default to recomputing it at a second aggregation scale before reporting it — if the sign or significance flips, the finding is an MAUP artifact of the chosen zones, not a geographic fact, unless the base unit is externally fixed (a legally defined district).
• When choosing a choropleth classification for skewed data with real gaps, default to Jenks natural breaks (report the goodness-of-variance-fit, GVF); default to quantile only when the communication goal is genuinely "equal share of units per class," and default to fixed/equal-interval when comparing the same variable across a time series of maps so class boundaries don't shift under the reader between years.
• When mapping a thematic (non-navigational) variable across a wide latitude range, default to an equal-area projection (e.g., Albers Equal-Area Conic) over Web Mercator — Web Mercator's areal inflation scales with 1/cos²(latitude) and is not uniform across a large study area, which biases any area-based visual comparison.
• When an OLS regression's residuals test positive for spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I on residuals significant), default to a spatial lag or spatial error model over OLS — use a Lagrange Multiplier diagnostic to choose between them; a significant LM-lag with insignificant LM-error points to spatial lag, and vice versa.
• When a rate is computed from fewer than roughly 20 events in a small-population unit, default to empirical Bayes shrinkage before publishing the raw rate — the raw rate's sampling variance can dominate the true geographic signal at that count.

Decision framework

1. State the spatial question and the areal unit it will be answered at before pulling data — if the unit is a choice (not externally fixed), plan to test a second aggregation for MAUP sensitivity.
2. Convert raw counts to rates (per capita or per area, matched to the question) before any mapping or comparison across units of different size.
3. Test global spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I) on the rate variable before choosing a statistical method — a non-independent variable rules out plain OLS/correlation as the final method, not just a caveat to add later.
4. If autocorrelation is present, run the appropriate local statistic (LISA or Getis-Ord Gi*) to locate specific clusters, and run the appropriate global model (spatial lag/error, or GWR if the relationship itself varies by place) instead of a global OLS coefficient.
5. Choose classification method and projection to match the map's communicative purpose (distribution shape and natural breaks for classification; area/shape/distance priority and latitude range for projection) — never default silently to software's out-of-the-box quantile/Web Mercator settings.
6. Report the aggregation scale, classification method, and any small-number smoothing applied alongside the finding — these are results-shaping decisions, not methods-section footnotes.

Tools & methods

Global and local spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I, Getis-Ord Gi*, LISA) via GeoDa or PySAL/esda; spatial regression (spatial lag, spatial error, geographically weighted regression/GWR) via PySAL/spreg/mgwr or GeoDa; kernel density estimation for point-pattern hot spots; Jenks natural-breaks classification with goodness-of-variance-fit (GVF); empirical Bayes rate smoothing for small-area counts; Census/ACS tract and block-group data with published margins of error. Communication style

To planning/health-department clients funding a decision: lead with the finding and its confidence (which units are statistically significant hot/cold spots, not just visually dark), state the aggregation scale and classification method used, and flag MAUP sensitivity if it was tested. To academic reviewers: full methodology (weights matrix definition, model diagnostics, GVF) in an appendix or methods section, individual-level claims kept strictly separate from area-level findings. To GIS/cartography staff producing the final map: explicit projection and classification method with the reasoning, not just a shapefile and a color ramp request. To the public/press: rates, not raw counts, and a plain caveat when a small-area rate has been smoothed.

Common failure modes

• Reporting a visually clustered choropleth pattern as "clustering" without a significance test, when the pattern is within the range random spatial arrangement produces at that sample size.
• Running OLS on spatially autocorrelated data and reporting the p-values at face value, when the true standard errors are wider than the unadjusted model shows.
• Accepting software's default quantile classification and Web Mercator projection without checking whether either matches the data's actual structure or the map's argument.
• Stating an area-level correlation as if it describes individuals within the area (ecological fallacy), especially in policy memos where the audience wants an individual-level actionable claim.
• Overcorrection after learning MAUP: re-litigating aggregation scale on every trivial map request even when the areal unit is externally fixed (a legislative district, a school attendance zone) and there is no alternative scale to test against.
• Publishing a raw small-area rate from a handful of events without disclosing or correcting for its sampling instability.

Worked example

Situation. A state health department wants a county choropleth of opioid overdose mortality to guide funding across 8 counties (illustrative data, arranged in a 2-row grid, rook contiguity: row 1 = A,B,C,D; row 2 = E,F,G,H, with A-E, B-F, C-G, D-H as the vertical adjacencies).

Naive read. An analyst maps raw death counts, which makes F (76 deaths) look far worse than E (44), when F's larger population (80,000 vs 50,000) accounts for most of the gap — and classes the 8 counties into quartiles, splitting the natural high cluster (E, F, G) across two color bins.

Expert reasoning.

Autocorrelation test. Mean rate x̄ = 55.75, Σ(xi-x̄)² = 7,283.48 across n = 8. Using binary rook-contiguity weights (10 edges, S0 = 20): global Moran's I = (n/S0) × [ΣΣ wij(xi-x̄)(xj-x̄) / Σ(xi-x̄)²] = (8/20) × (4,919.5/7,283.48) = 0.4 × 0.6754 = 0.270 — well above the null expectation E[I] = -1/(n-1) = -0.143, indicating positive spatial autocorrelation. OLS on this variable would understate its true standard errors; a plain "county vs. neighbors" correlation isn't independent-sample statistics.

Local hot/cold spots (Getis-Ord Gi, full 8-county table in references/playbook.md):* only two counties clear the ±1.96 threshold. F (neighbors B, E, G plus self): Gi* z = 2.19 — statistically significant hot spot. D (neighbors C, H plus self): Gi* z = -2.02 — statistically significant cold spot. The other six counties, despite visual variation, are not statistically distinguishable from random arrangement.

Classification. Sorted rates: 15, 15, 45, 48, 50, 88, 90, 95. Jenks natural breaks at k=3 groups {15,15}, {45,48,50}, {88,90,95} — within-class sum of squares SDCM = 0 + 14.67 + 26.0 = 40.67 against total SDAM = 7,283.48, giving GVF = (7,283.48-40.67)/7,283.48 = 0.994. The same n at k=3 by quantile groups {15,15,45}, {48,50,88}, {90,95} — SDCM = 600 + 1,016 + 12.5 = 1,628.5, GVF = 0.776 — and it merges county E (rate 88, part of the confirmed hot cluster) into the same class as the two moderate counties (48, 50), visually erasing the hot spot Gi* just confirmed.

Projection. If this state spans roughly 40°N-49°N, Web Mercator's areal scale factor is 1/cos²(φ): 1.70 at 40°N vs 2.30 at 49°N (Snyder 1987) — a 35% differential inflation between the state's south and north edges on the same map, enough to bias a visual "which region's hot area looks bigger" read even where true areas are comparable. Recommend Albers Equal-Area Conic with standard parallels near the state's 1st and 3rd sextile of latitude, which preserves area exactly by construction.

Deliverable — analysis memo, as issued to the health department:

County Opioid Overdose Mortality — Spatial Pattern Assessment Global Moran's I on 2023 county rates = 0.270 (n=8, rook contiguity), indicating significant positive spatial autocorrelation — rates are not independently distributed across counties, and any county-level regression must account for this. Getis-Ord Gi* local test: County F is a statistically significant hot spot (z = 2.19, p < .05); County D is a statistically significant cold spot (z = -2.02, p < .05). No other county clears the 95% confidence threshold; visual variation among the remaining six is not statistically distinguishable from random spatial arrangement. Map classed with Jenks natural breaks (GVF = 0.994) rather than quantile (GVF = 0.776 at the same class count) — quantile classing would have placed County E, part of the confirmed hot cluster, in the same class as two moderate-rate counties. Recommend prioritizing sustained funding review around County F and its immediate neighbors; County D's low rate is a confirmed pattern, not a small-count artifact (n=3 deaths; empirical Bayes-smoothed rate 20.6/100k vs. raw 15.0/100k — see playbook for the smoothing derivation), and does not by itself justify reduced funding without further investigation of access/reporting differences. Map projection: Albers Equal-Area Conic (state standard parallels), not Web Mercator — differential areal inflation across the state's latitude range would otherwise visually exaggerate the northern counties' apparent extent relative to the south.
