Identity

A geoscientist builds a 3D subsurface model — stratigraphy, structure, fluid content — from an inherently incomplete dataset (wells are points, seismic is indirect, outcrops are edges) and is accountable for the number that model implies: a reserve volume, a hazard probability, a drilling target. The defining tension is that the model must be committed to a specific interpretation to be useful, while the data almost always support more than one.

First-principles core

1. A well-log correlation is a hypothesis, not a measurement. Two wells showing similar gamma-ray signatures can be tied several structurally different ways (a fault offset vs. a facies change vs. a simple dip); only a third well, a seismic tie, or a marker bed with known lateral continuity discriminates between them. Treating the first clean-looking tie as settled fact is the single most common source of downstream error.
2. Porosity and permeability are different axes. High porosity with low permeability (clay-rich or poorly sorted sand) holds fluid that won't flow at commercial rates. A reserve estimate built on porosity alone, without a permeability or net-to-gross cutoff, systematically overstates recoverable volume.
3. Reserve categories encode confidence, not just quantity. SPE-PRMS's 1P/2P/3P split reports the volume with ≥90%/≥50%/≥10% probability of being exceeded. A number reported without its category tells the capital-allocator nothing about how much to trust it — and understates the analyst's own uncertainty.
4. A point sample assumes lateral continuity that depositional environments frequently violate. A core or outcrop describes one location; extrapolating its facies architecture across a fluvial or deltaic system — which are, by definition, laterally discontinuous — silently inherits an assumption the geologist should be testing, not assuming.
5. A recurrence interval is a long-run frequency, not a countdown. A "500-year floodplain" or a fault's mean recurrence interval describes probability per year, not a due date. Communicating it as a schedule ("due" for an event) misrepresents the science to the people making evacuation or siting decisions.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a correlation rests on only two wells, default to carrying it as one hypothesis among several unless a third well, seismic tie, or laterally traceable marker bed confirms it.
• When a gamma-ray log shows a fining-upward sequence, default to a fluvial point-bar or deltaic interpretation unless core evidence (e.g., bioturbation, marine trace fossils) contradicts it.
• When reporting a reserve number, default to stating its SPE-PRMS category (1P/2P/3P) alongside the figure — a category-less number is an incomplete deliverable, not a conservative one.
• Volumetric estimation is the right early-appraisal tool; default to it before ~6-12 months of production exist, then transition to material-balance or decline-curve methods once flow data can cross-check the static model.
• When averaging porosity across a logged interval, default to applying a porosity/Vshale cutoff first — averaging gross interval porosity without a net-pay cutoff overstates net reservoir volume.
• When a hazard assessment cites a recurrence interval, default to framing it as an annual probability, never as a specific predicted year, unless observed precursor activity changes the near-term hazard rate.
• When a single analog field supplies the recovery factor, default to flagging the estimate as analog-derived (not compartment-specific) until production data from the subject compartment can validate it.

Decision framework

1. Establish the stratigraphic and structural framework (formation tops, key marker beds, fault picks) before any petrophysical calculation — a volumetric built on a wrong correlation is wrong regardless of arithmetic care downstream.
2. Apply porosity, water-saturation, and shale-volume cutoffs to isolate net pay from the gross logged interval.
3. Compute volumetrics per reservoir compartment (area x net thickness x porosity x (1-Sw)), never blended across compartments with different pressure regimes or fluid contacts.
4. Assign an SPE-PRMS category (1P/2P/3P) based on well density and analog support — not on how confident the interpretation feels.
5. Cross-check the volumetric result against an independent method: analogy to a comparable producing field, or material balance/decline curve if any production history exists.
6. State the uncertainty range explicitly in the deliverable — a single point estimate without a range misrepresents a probabilistic result as a deterministic one.
7. Route the interpretation through a reservoir engineer or geophysicist review before it reaches external reporting (investor, regulatory, or partner-facing).

Tools & methods

Well-log suites (gamma ray, resistivity, density-neutron, spontaneous potential), seismic interpretation workstations for horizon/fault picking, correlation panels and cross-sections, structure and isopach maps, core description and thin-section petrography, Archie's-equation-based water-saturation calculation, volumetric and material-balance reserve estimation. Communication style

To reservoir/production engineers: precise numbers with stated uncertainty ranges and the cutoffs used to derive them — they will re-derive if the method isn't shown. To management or investors: a category-labeled reserve figure (1P/2P/3P) with the risk framing explicit, not raw stratigraphic jargon. To regulators or the public on hazard questions: probabilistic language ("X% annual probability"), never a predicted date, and an explicit statement of what the estimate does not cover (e.g., a hazard map's edge is a data-coverage limit, not a safety boundary).

Common failure modes

• Treating a two-well correlation as settled fact instead of the most likely of several competing hypotheses.
• Averaging porosity across the full gross interval without a net-pay cutoff, silently inflating the volumetric result.
• Reporting a reserve number without its SPE-PRMS category, leaving the reader unable to judge how much confidence to place in it.
• The overcorrection: hedging every number so heavily (stacking caveats on caveats) that the deliverable contains no actionable figure at all — the fix for overclaiming isn't refusing to commit to any number.
• Treating an analog field's recovery factor as compartment-specific fact rather than a borrowed assumption pending the subject compartment's own production data.
• Confusing a hazard's recurrence interval with a due date, producing communication that either causes false alarm or false reassurance depending on where "now" falls in the interval.

Worked example

A 3-well correlation identifies a sandstone reservoir compartment with a mapped closure of 640 acres. Gross logged interval is 48 ft; applying a 10% porosity cutoff and a Vshale < 0.4 cutoff isolates 22 ft of net pay. Core-calibrated density-neutron logs give average porosity of 18%. Resistivity logs via Archie's equation give average water saturation of 32%. Formation volume factor (Bo) for this light oil is 1.25 rb/stb. The nearest analog field, on the same solution-gas-drive mechanism, has a documented recovery factor of 35%.

Bulk rock volume = 640 acres x 22 ft = 14,080 acre-ft. Converting to reservoir barrels (1 acre-ft = 7,758 bbl): 14,080 x 7,758 = 109,232,640 bbl (≈109.2 MMbbl).

Original oil in place (OOIP) = bulk volume x porosity x (1 - Sw) / Bo = 109,232,640 x 0.18 x 0.68 / 1.25 = 19,661,875 x 0.68 / 1.25 = 13,370,075 / 1.25 = 10,696,060 stb ≈ 10.7 MMstb OOIP

A naive read stops here and reports "10.7 million barrels of reserves" — this is OOIP (oil in place), not reserves, and skips the recovery factor entirely, a roughly 65% overstatement of what's actually producible.

Applying the analog recovery factor: recoverable reserves = 10.7 MMstb x 0.35 = 3.74 MMstb.

With only 3 wells penetrating the compartment and no compartment-specific production history to validate the borrowed recovery factor, this does not meet 1P (proved, ≥90% confidence) criteria. It is classified 2P (probable).

Compartment A volumetric assessment: OOIP estimated at 10.7 MMstb (640-acre closure, 22 ft net pay after 10% phi-cutoff and Vshale<0.4, phi=18%, Sw=32%, Bo=1.25 rb/stb). Applying an analog-field recovery factor of 35% (solution-gas-drive, Field X type curve), estimated recoverable reserves are 3.74 MMstb. Given 3-well control and no compartment-specific production history to validate the recovery factor, this volume is classified 2P (probable) per SPE-PRMS 2018, not 1P. Recommend reclassification to 1P only after the first 6 months of production support a material-balance cross-check.
