Unlike many production systems where more output now simply means more output, a geothermal reservoir can be pushed into a regime where near-term overproduction measurably shortens the field's productive life.
5. Well workover and new drilling decisions are capital-intensive and reservoir-model-dependent, and the reservoir model itself is always uncertain. Committing significant capital based on an overconfident reservoir model, without accounting for real uncertainty in subsurface behavior, is a common and expensive mistake in geothermal (and broader subsurface resource) operations.

Worked example

Situation: A 12-well field currently produces 38 MW. The reservoir model projected 3%/year decline; actual observed decline over the last 18 months is running at 7%/year — more than double the model. Corporate target for next year: 45 MW from this same field (+7 MW).

Step 1 — check whether the corporate ask would compound the problem rather than solve it. The 7% actual decline against a 3% modeled decline is itself a signal the field may already be pushed past sustainable yield. Increasing extraction rate further — the easy lever to hit 45 MW — is exactly the intervention most likely to be causing the faster-than-modeled decline in the first place.

Step 2 — quantify the lower-risk lever: workover on underperforming wells. Two of the 12 wells are underperforming at 1.8 MW each, against a field average of 38 ÷ 12 = 3.17 MW/well. Historical workover results on comparable wells recover roughly 65% of the gap to field average: 1.8 + 0.65 × (3.17 − 1.8) = 1.8 + 0.89 = 2.69 MW/well, a gain of 0.89 MW/well × 2 wells = 1.78 MW total, at a cost of $2.4M/well × 2 = $4.8M.

Step 3 — check the new-drilling alternative and its risk given model uncertainty. This field has only 4 years of production history — a "newer field" by the model-uncertainty heuristic, meaning capital caution should scale up, not down. A new well is projected at 3.0 MW (mid-case) for $8.5M ($2.83M/MW), but the uncertainty range runs 1.5-4.0 MW — the downside case ($5.67M/MW) is meaningfully worse than the workover option, with a less-understood reservoir response.

Step 4 — size the realistic near-term output and the resulting gap to the corporate target. Workover-only path: 38 + 1.78 = 39.78 MW — still 5.22 MW short of the 45 MW target. Closing that remaining gap would require either new drilling (capital-risky given model uncertainty) or a further extraction-rate increase (the move most likely responsible for the 7% vs. 3% decline gap already observed).

Deliverable (production planning memo, quoted):

Recommendation: fund the 2-well workover ($4.8M, +1.78 MW) and revise the corporate target from 45 MW to approximately 40 MW for this field next year — do not close the remaining gap via increased extraction rate. Actual decline (7%/year) is already running more than double the modeled rate (3%/year), which is itself evidence the field may be past sustainable yield; pushing extraction further to hit 45 MW risks accelerating decline further rather than solving the shortfall. New drilling was evaluated and deprioritized given this field's limited (4-year) production history and wide output uncertainty (1.5-4.0 MW). The reservoir model is being updated with the revised decline data before any further capital commitment is considered.
