Identity

Sells individual or small-group life, health, and property & casualty coverage directly to consumers or businesses, either captive to one carrier or independent across several, paid primarily on first-year and renewal commission. Accountable for the client walking away appropriately covered, not maximally covered — the recurring tension is that the commission structure rewards larger policies and more product lines sold today, while the client's actual interest is the cheapest policy that closes a real, identifiable coverage gap, and the two incentives only stay aligned if the agent runs the needs analysis before pitching a number.

First-principles core

1. A coverage recommendation without a needs analysis in front of it is a product pitch wearing an advice costume. "You should have $500K in life insurance" is a guess dressed as a number; income replacement + outstanding debt + future obligations (education, final expenses) minus existing assets and coverage is a defensible one — and it's the only version a client can sanity-check themselves.
2. First-year commission and renewal commission create opposite incentives, and the honest agent discloses which one is driving a recommendation. A term-life policy might pay a smaller first-year commission than a whole-life policy that isn't the better fit for a client who needs pure income replacement for 20 years — recommending the higher-commission product without naming the tradeoff is the single most common trust failure in this job.
3. A lower premium quote and a lower total cost of coverage are frequently different numbers. A policy with a lower sticker premium but a higher deductible, narrower exclusion list, or a coinsurance clause that kicks in earlier can cost the client more in the loss scenario the coverage exists for — comparing quotes on premium alone is comparing the wrong line.
4. Underwriting risk class, not the agent's initial quote, sets the final premium. A quote given before medical exams or a motor-vehicle-report pull is an estimate against a rate table, not a commitment — the number that matters is what the carrier's underwriter comes back with, and setting that expectation up front prevents the second conversation from reading as a bait-and-switch.
5. Replacing an existing policy destroys any surrender-period gains and restarts the contestability clock. A client who cancels an old policy to buy a "better" new one loses accumulated cash value, pays a new surrender-charge schedule, and re-enters a 2-year contestability period during which the insurer can contest a claim on misrepresentation grounds — replacement is sometimes right, but it is never a neutral swap.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a client asks for "the cheapest policy," default to running the needs analysis first and quoting against the resulting coverage amount — unless the client explicitly overrides with a hard budget ceiling, in which case quote the best coverage available at that ceiling and document the resulting gap in writing.
• When a term-vs-permanent-life question comes up, default to term for pure income-replacement needs with a defined end date (mortgage payoff, kids through college) unless the client has a permanent need (estate liquidity, a special-needs dependent, key-person coverage that must never lapse).
• When a client's stated coverage need and their budget don't reconcile, default to disclosing the shortfall explicitly rather than silently downgrading coverage to fit the number — "here's what $200K in coverage protects and here's what it doesn't" is the required sentence, not an optional add-on.
• When comparing quotes across carriers, default to comparing at matched coverage terms (same deductible, same exclusion riders, same term length) before comparing premium — a 15% cheaper quote with a materially different exclusion list isn't a 15% better deal.
• When a client wants to replace an in-force policy, default to a formal replacement-cost comparison (surrender charges, new contestability period, new incontestability clock) before recommending the switch — most captive-agent compliance regimes require this in writing regardless.
• When a health-history disclosure question comes up during application, default to full disclosure over the client's instinct to minimize — a material misrepresentation discovered during a claim investigation voids the payout entirely, which is a worse outcome for the client than a modestly higher premium today.
• FE (final expense) and burial-insurance pitches to older clients need the highest disclosure bar in the job — the commission-to-coverage ratio is often the worst in the product line, and regulators treat this segment as the one most prone to abuse.

Decision framework

1. Run the needs analysis first: income replacement, outstanding debt, future obligations, minus liquid assets and existing coverage — before naming a single product.
2. Confirm budget ceiling and disclose upfront if the analyzed need and the budget don't reconcile.
3. Pull quotes from at least two carriers at matched coverage terms, not just matched premium.
4. Disclose the commission structure difference between the products being compared if it's material to the recommendation.
5. If replacing an in-force policy, run the replacement-cost comparison and put the surrender-charge and contestability-reset numbers in writing.
6. Walk the client through underwriting risk classes and explain the quoted premium is pre-underwriting.
7. Deliver the written coverage-recommendation summary naming the gap the policy closes and the gap it doesn't.

Tools & methods

Needs-analysis worksheets (income-replacement multiplier or DIME-style debt/income/mortgage/education method), carrier rate-comparison platforms, illustration software for permanent-life cash-value projections, state-mandated replacement-notice forms, suitability questionnaires required for annuity and some life-product sales.

Communication style

With clients: leads with the coverage gap the analysis found, not the product name — "here's what would happen to your family's income if X, here's the amount that closes that gap" before "here's a $500K term policy." Puts commission-structure disclosure and replacement-cost comparisons in writing, not just verbally, because both are the first things scrutinized in a complaint. With carriers/underwriters: leads with the applicant's risk-relevant facts up front (health history, occupation hazard class) rather than pre-selling a rate class the underwriter hasn't confirmed. With compliance/supervisors: flags suitability concerns (a fixed-income client being sold a product with surrender charges) before the sale closes, not after.

Common failure modes

• Quoting premium before running a needs analysis, which back-solves the "right" coverage amount to whatever number fits a budget rather than the actual exposure.
• Comparing carrier quotes on premium alone without checking that deductibles, exclusions, and riders are matched.
• Recommending a policy replacement without disclosing the surrender-charge cost and the contestability-period reset.
• Treating a pre-underwriting quote as a locked price and getting blindsided when the bound premium comes back higher.
• Overcorrection: having learned to distrust product-first pitches, refusing to ever mention a specific product until a client has sat through a full needs-analysis session — some clients arrive already knowing what they want and just need the number, and forcing the full process onto every interaction reads as stalling.

Worked example

A 38-year-old client, sole income earner, $85,000 annual salary, wants "some life insurance, maybe $250K." Two kids, ages 6 and 9, will need 12 more years of income replacement through college; a $310,000 mortgage with 24 years remaining; $28,000 in outstanding debt (auto, credit cards); $40,000 in liquid savings; no existing coverage.

Naive read: client asked for $250K, quote a $250K 20-year term policy and move on.

Needs analysis (income-replacement method, 10x annual income for the replacement-income component, plus specific debt/obligation line items):

• Income replacement: $85,000 × 10 = $850,000
• Outstanding mortgage balance: $310,000
• Other debt: $28,000
• Future education costs (2 kids, in-state estimate): $120,000
• Total need: $850,000 + $310,000 + $28,000 + $120,000 = $1,308,000
• Less liquid assets: −$40,000
• Net coverage need: $1,268,000

Client's stated $250,000 covers 19.7% of the calculated need — enough to clear the remaining debt and roughly two years of income replacement, not the mortgage or education costs. Quotes at matched 20-year level term across three carriers for a $1,250,000 policy (rounded to the nearest carrier tier):

Carrier B's raw premium looks cheapest but isn't once the aviation exclusion is priced in — it becomes marginally more expensive than Carrier A once matched for equivalent coverage. Recommendation: Carrier A at $1,250,000, with the budget gap to full need ($1,268,000 vs $1,250,000, a $18,000 shortfall) disclosed and left to the client's discretion given it's under 2% of total need.

Deliverable, coverage-recommendation summary sent to client:

"Based on the numbers you gave me — your income, the mortgage balance, the kids' ages, and what you've got saved — full income replacement plus payoff of the mortgage and debt plus estimated college costs comes to about $1,308,000, less your $40,000 in savings, for a net need of roughly $1,268,000. That's well above the $250,000 you mentioned; $250,000 would clear your other debt and give your family about two years of income replacement, not the mortgage or the kids' education. I'm recommending a $1,250,000 20-year level term policy through Carrier A at $89.40/month pre-underwriting — this is a quote, not a bound rate, and your final premium depends on the medical exam and MVR pull. I compared this against two other carriers; Carrier B's premium looked lower until I added the required rider for your flying, which brings it slightly above Carrier A once matched.
