1. Melt chemistry is adjusted by calculated additions based on the current heat's actual measured composition and weight, not a fixed recipe. Scrap and charge composition varies heat to heat, so the alloy addition needed to hit a target chemistry has to be calculated from this heat's own sample assay, not assumed identical to a prior successful heat's addition amounts.
2. Recovery rate — the fraction of an added element that actually ends up in the final chemistry — is never 100%, and it varies by element and furnace practice. Some fraction of any alloy addition oxidizes or reports to slag; addition calculations have to account for the expected recovery rate, not assume the element added equals the element retained.
3. Slag chemistry is an active process control tool, not a passive byproduct. Slag basicity and oxidation state determine which refining reactions — desulfurization, dephosphorization — the slag can actually support; a slag with the wrong basicity won't remove the target impurity regardless of how much time or heat is applied.
4. Tap temperature has to be controlled within a specific range for the alloy and downstream casting process, not judged as "hot enough." A melt's actual chemistry can shift meaningfully between sampling and when an addition is made, from continued reactions or further scrap melting — treating a sample as permanently current risks basing a decision on stale information.

Communication style

Heat records state actual measured chemistry before and after additions, calculated versus actual addition amounts, and tap temperature, never "chemistry adjusted to spec." Escalation about an off-chemistry heat cites the specific element, its measured value against target, and the addition/recovery assumption used, not "chemistry was off."

Common failure modes

• Reusing a prior heat's alloy addition amounts without recalculating from the current heat's actual assay and weight, producing off-target chemistry when charge composition differs.
• Assuming 1:1 recovery for an alloy addition rather than accounting for the element-specific recovery rate, systematically under- or over-shooting target chemistry.
• Adjusting slag practice without regard to the specific refining reaction needed for sulfur/phosphorus removal.
• Tapping based on time-in-furnace or visual "looks hot enough" rather than verified actual temperature against the specific target.
• Having learned to distrust naive full-recovery assumptions, over-adding alloy "just to be safe" beyond the recovery-adjusted calculation, risking an overshoot in the opposite direction.

Worked example

A steel heat targets 1.20% manganese (Mn). The melt weighs 50,000 kg, and a sample assay shows current Mn at 0.40%. This furnace's established ferromanganese recovery rate is 90% — 10% of added elemental Mn is typically lost to oxidation and slag.

Naive read: Needed Mn increase is 1.20% − 0.40% = 0.80 percentage points. Add ferromanganese containing 50,000 × 0.0080 = 400 kg of elemental Mn, assuming full recovery.

Expert reasoning: At 90% recovery, only 90% of the elemental Mn added actually ends up dissolved in the final chemistry. To achieve an effective 400 kg recovered into the melt, the total elemental Mn charged has to be higher: required addition = 400 ÷ 0.90 = 444.4 kg. If the naive 400 kg were charged instead, actual recovered Mn would be 400 × 0.90 = 360 kg — an actual increase of 360 ÷ 50,000 = 0.72 percentage points, landing final Mn at 0.40 + 0.72 = 1.12%, which is 0.08 points short of the 1.20% target (a 10% shortfall relative to the intended 0.80-point increase: 0.08 ÷ 0.80).

Deliverable — alloy addition calculation note:

Target Mn: 1.20%, current assay 0.40%, melt weight 50,000 kg. Needed effective Mn increase: 0.80 percentage points = 400 kg elemental Mn recovered into melt. At this furnace's established 90% Mn recovery rate, required addition (elemental Mn basis) = 400 ÷ 0.90 = 444.4 kg, not 400 kg.
