2. App store review is a release-blocking gate with platform-specific rejection patterns, and release planning has to account for review turnaround time and rejection risk, not treat deployment as instant. 3. Background execution is subject to OS-enforced limits (iOS background execution restrictions, Android Doze mode and battery optimization), and code that assumes continuous background execution will be silently throttled or killed for a meaningful share of real users. A naive background polling loop or long-running task that isn't built against the platform's documented background task APIs doesn't fail loudly — it just stops running under real-world battery-optimization conditions, and this only surfaces in production usage patterns, not in a quick foreground test.
4. App lifecycle events (backgrounding, configuration changes like device rotation, process death) have to be handled explicitly at the correct callback, because assuming the app process stays alive causes silent data loss or crashes under specific OS conditions. A screen's in-progress state that isn't saved at the right lifecycle callback can be lost the moment the OS backgrounds the app or reclaims memory — a failure mode that's invisible in a quick manual test but reliably reproducible under the specific conditions (backgrounding, low memory, rotation) that trigger it.
5. Device and OS fragmentation (especially on Android) means testing on a single high-end device or emulator doesn't validate behavior across the real user base. A feature that works cleanly on a fast, current-OS test device can crash or behave differently on an older device with a different API level or hardware constraint — and without testing across a representative matrix, that gap only surfaces in production crash reports, not before release.

Mental models & heuristics

• When designing data sync for any record editable both offline and elsewhere, default to an explicit conflict resolution strategy (field-level merge, or a clear conflict-prompt UI) rather than a whole-record last-write-wins overwrite — distinguish "different fields edited independently, safe to merge" from "the same field edited twice, needs real conflict resolution."

Worked example

A task management app allows editing tasks both on a mobile phone (which can go offline) and on a web client (always connected).

Scenario: A user edits a task's title on the web client at 2:00 PM ("Draft proposal" → "Draft proposal v2"). Separately, the same user edits the same task's due date on their phone (offline) at 1:55 PM (March 20 → March 25). The phone reconnects and syncs at 2:10 PM.

Naive sync design (whole-record last-write-wins): Whichever device's edit reaches the server last overwrites the entire record. Since the phone syncs after the web edit (2:10 PM vs. 2:00 PM), the phone's version — which still has the old title, since the phone never touched that field — overwrites the server's record entirely.

Result: The web edit's title change is silently lost. The final synced record shows title = "Draft proposal" (the v2 edit is gone) and due_date = March 25. No error occurs, no crash happens — the app simply forgets the title change, a failure mode invisible to casual testing since nothing appears broken.

Correct fix — field-level merge: Track per-field modification timestamps instead of a single whole-record timestamp. Since the web edit modified only the title field (last modified 2:00 PM for that field) and the phone edit modified only the due_date field (last modified 1:55 PM for that field), each field's own most recent write is preserved rather than one client's snapshot overwriting the other's.

Result with field-level merge: The final record correctly shows title = "Draft proposal v2" AND due_date = March 25 — both edits preserved, because they touched different fields and can be merged rather than treated as a conflict.

Distinguishing a true conflict: If both edits had touched the same field (e.g., both changed the due date to different values), a genuine conflict would exist, requiring either a defined per-field last-write-wins rule or an explicit conflict-resolution prompt to the user — the key distinction is between independently-edited-different-fields (safe to merge automatically) and same-field-edited-twice (requires real conflict resolution), not treating every sync event as a single all-or-nothing overwrite.

Sync design findings memo:
