First-principles core

1. Boundary value analysis targets where bugs actually concentrate — off-by-one errors at the edges of a valid range — and testing only typical mid-range values tells you almost nothing about them. A test case using a comfortable middle-of-the-range input can pass cleanly while the function's actual boundary logic (a > that should be >=, an off-by-one in a loop) sits completely untested — the bug only reveals itself when the exact boundary values are checked.
2. The test pyramid (a broad base of fast unit tests, a moderate layer of integration tests, and a small top layer of end-to-end tests) exists because unit tests isolate failures precisely and run fast, while E2E tests are slow, brittle, and expensive to diagnose when they fail. An inverted "ice cream cone" shape — mostly E2E tests, few unit tests — produces a slow, flaky suite where a failure could be caused by almost anything and takes real time to root-cause, even though it looks thorough by test count.
3. Code coverage percentage is a gap-finder, not a quality guarantee — it tells you what code executed during a test, not whether the test's assertions meaningfully checked the code's behavior. A function can achieve 100% line coverage from a single test case that exercises every line while completely missing the actual logical branches (boundary conditions, edge cases) that matter — high coverage rules out completely untested code, but it doesn't rule out badly tested code.
4. A flaky test (one that passes or fails inconsistently on the same code) has to be triaged immediately — root-caused and fixed, or explicitly quarantined with a tracked follow-up — not simply re-run until it passes. Re-running a flaky test until green trains the team to distrust the entire suite's signal, and a real intermittent bug can hide behind a test that's dismissed as "just flaky" without ever being investigated.
5. Test effort should be allocated by risk — probability of failure times impact of failure — for each functional area, not spread evenly across all features. A rarely used settings page and a payment processing flow don't deserve the same testing depth; applying uniform test rigor everywhere under-invests in the areas where a defect would actually be costly and over-invests in areas where it wouldn't matter much.

Mental models & heuristics

• When designing test cases for an input range, default to testing the boundary values explicitly (minimum, minimum-1, minimum+1, maximum, maximum-1, maximum+1) rather than relying on typical mid-range values — boundaries are where off-by-one and comparison-operator bugs actually live.
• When reviewing a test suite's structure, default to checking its unit-to-integration-to-E2E ratio against the pyramid model (broad unit base, few E2E tests), rather than accepting a suite that's grown organically into an inverted shape.
• When code coverage is reported, default to treating it as a floor that flags definitely-undertested code, not a ceiling that proves quality — investigate low-coverage areas for missing tests, but don't treat high coverage in an area as evidence it's actually well-tested without checking what the assertions cover.
• When a test fails intermittently, default to triaging it immediately — either root-causing and fixing it, or explicitly quarantining it with a tracked ticket — rather than simply re-running until it passes.
• When allocating test effort across functional areas, default to weighting by risk (probability of failure × impact of failure), not spreading test depth evenly regardless of how much a defect in that area would actually matter.
• When a bug is found, default to classifying severity (technical impact: crash/data loss vs. cosmetic) and priority (business impact: frequency, revenue/trust exposure) as two separate dimensions, not a single combined rating that conflates them.

Decision framework

1. Identify functional areas and their risk level (probability of defect × impact of failure) to guide where testing depth should concentrate.
2. Design test cases per area using equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis for any input range or classification logic, not just typical-value test cases.
3. Structure the automated test suite per the test pyramid ratio — a broad base of fast unit tests, a moderate layer of integration tests, and a minimal top layer of E2E tests.
4. Track code coverage as a gap-finding tool, investigating low-coverage areas for missing tests, while not treating high coverage alone as proof of test quality.
5. Classify bugs by severity (technical impact) and priority (business impact) separately, not as a single blended rating.

Common failure modes

• Testing only typical mid-range input values, missing off-by-one bugs that live at boundary conditions.
• Allowing a test suite to grow into an inverted "ice cream cone" shape (mostly E2E, few unit tests), producing slow, flaky, hard-to-diagnose failures.

Worked example

A discount code validation function applies a discount if an order's total is between $50 and $500, inclusive.

Naive test suite (achieves 100% line coverage): A single test case with an order total of $200 (mid-range) confirms the discount applies. Every line of the function executes, and the coverage report shows 100% line coverage.

Boundary value analysis reveals the naive suite's gap. Testing the actual boundary values:

• $49.99 (just below minimum) — should not apply discount
• $50.00 (exact minimum) — should apply discount
• $50.01 (just above minimum) — should apply
• $499.99 (just below maximum) — should apply
• $500.00 (exact maximum) — should apply discount
• $500.01 (just above maximum) — should not apply discount

Bug found: Testing $50.00 exactly reveals the function's comparison logic uses order_total > 50 (strict greater-than) instead of order_total >= 50 — orders of exactly $50.00 incorrectly fail to receive the discount. This bug is completely invisible to the naive mid-range test, which achieved 100% line coverage without ever exercising this specific boundary condition — the line executed either way, so line coverage alone didn't reveal the off-by-one logic error.

Classification:

• Severity: Medium — incorrect discount application has real financial impact but doesn't cause a crash or data loss.
• Priority: High — $50.00 is a common, round-number order value likely to occur frequently in production, creating direct revenue and customer-trust impact at scale.

Fix and regression prevention: The comparison is corrected to >=. All six boundary test cases ($49.99, $50.00, $50.01, $499.99, $500.00, $500.01) are added to the regression suite to catch any future regression on this specific logic.

QA findings memo:

Bug Report — Discount Code Boundary Logic Bug: Orders totaling exactly $50.00 incorrectly fail to receive the discount, due to a strict > comparison instead of >=.
