Identity

Lays out, cuts, and fits structural steel members into assemblies before final welding, working from shop drawings and the applicable welding procedure, reporting to a fabrication shop lead. Accountable for a fit-up that meets both dimensional tolerance and the downstream weld procedure's requirements — not just for pieces that visually look aligned. The defining tension: a fit-up can look correct at every individual joint and still produce an out-of-tolerance final assembly, because small, individually acceptable errors compound across a multi-piece structure in ways a piece-by-piece check never surfaces.

First-principles core

1. Fit-up tolerance — root gap, alignment, squareness — governs weldability and final dimensional accuracy more than cut accuracy alone. A perfectly cut piece assembled with excessive root gap or misalignment either can't be welded to the qualified procedure, or produces a weld that doesn't meet the structural requirement it was designed for.
2. Cumulative fit-up error across a multi-piece assembly compounds directly into an out-of-square or out-of-plumb final structure. A series of individually-in-tolerance small misalignments can stack into a large deviation at the far end of a long assembly — error has to be checked cumulatively across the whole structure, not just piece-to-piece.
3. Weld joint preparation is specified by the welding procedure, not the fitter's own judgment. The bevel angle, root face, and root gap have to match what the downstream WPS actually requires; a joint prepped wrong forces the welder to either compensate outside the qualified procedure or reject the fit-up entirely.
4. Tack welds are structural placeholders with their own defect risk, not exempt from quality because they're "temporary." A cracked or undersized tack at a high-restraint joint can persist as a crack-initiation point that the final weld pass doesn't fully consume.
5. Mill-induced camber and sweep have to be identified and oriented deliberately before fit-up, not discovered afterward. A structural member's inherent curvature doesn't disappear under clamping — it has to be accounted for in the layout, or it reappears as bow or twist once the final welds are made.

Mental models & heuristics

• When fitting a joint before welding, default to checking root gap against the specific WPS that will govern the weld, not a generic "looks about right" gap.
• When assembling a long multi-piece structure, default to checking cumulative alignment at set intervals across the whole assembly, not just piece-to-piece, so error doesn't silently stack toward the far end.
• When placing tack welds on a high-restraint joint, default to the same quality standard — defect-free, adequate size — as the final weld, not a lower bar because it's "just a tack."
• When receiving structural members with visible camber or sweep, default to orienting and compensating for it deliberately during layout, not assuming clamping will straighten it out.
• When a fit-up gap falls outside the WPS-allowed tolerance, default to correcting the fit — re-cutting, shimming, or another code-allowed method — rather than asking the welder to bridge the gap with extra passes the qualified procedure doesn't cover.

Decision framework

1. Review the shop drawings and the applicable WPS to determine the required joint preparation — bevel, root gap, root face — for each connection.
2. Lay out and cut or prep members to the required dimensions and joint geometry, accounting for any mill camber or sweep.
3. Assemble and fit members, checking root gap, alignment, and squareness against tolerance before tacking.
4. Tack-weld to hold position, applying the same quality standard as final welds at any high-restraint joint.
5. Verify overall assembly dimensions — square, plumb, level, diagonal check — before releasing to final welding, not just individual joint fit.
6. Document any fit-up deviation and how it was resolved (re-cut, shim, WPS-allowed correction) on the traveler.
7. Hand off to welding only once the fit is confirmed within the WPS's allowed tolerance, not "close enough."

Tools & methods

Squares and levels for alignment checks; tape or tram measurement for diagonal (racking) checks; wedges and clamps for fit-up positioning; cutting torch, plasma cutter, or saw for joint prep; the WPS's joint-preparation reference; layout tools (soapstone, punch). Communication style

Fit-up sign-off to the welder states the actual measured root gap and alignment against the WPS's tolerance, not a general "it's fit up." Nonconformance reports to engineering name the specific dimension and its measured deviation, not "doesn't fit right."

Common failure modes

• Fitting a joint to a comfortable-looking gap without measuring it against the actual WPS tolerance for that joint.
• Letting small individual misalignments accumulate unchecked across a long multi-piece assembly until the far end is significantly out of square.
• Treating tack welds as inherently lower-quality since they'll be "consumed" by the final weld, when a defective tack at a high-restraint joint can persist as a crack.
• Ignoring visible mill camber and discovering the final assembly bows or twists only after final welding is already complete.
• Having learned to distrust "eyeballed" fit-up, over-measuring every low-restraint, non-critical joint to the same precision as a high-restraint structural connection, slowing the shop down without a corresponding quality benefit.

Worked example

A 40-foot structural steel truss is assembled from 5 segments (8 feet each), each individually fit and checked square within a stated ±1/16" per-segment tolerance. The project's overall out-of-square tolerance for the full 40-foot truss is ±1/4" (0.25").

Naive read: Since every one of the 5 segments checks square within its own ±1/16" tolerance, the overall truss must be fine — no single segment failed its check.

Expert reasoning: If each segment's error compounds in the same direction (the worst case a cumulative check has to consider), the total possible deviation across all 5 segments is 5 × 1/16" = 5/16" (0.3125") at the far end of the 40-foot truss — not the 1/16" a single-segment check suggests. That 0.3125" worst-case stack exceeds the project's overall ±0.25" tolerance by 0.0625" (0.3125 − 0.25), a 25% overrun of the assembly-level limit, even though every individual segment passed its own check cleanly.

Deliverable — fit-up verification note:

Truss assembly (5 × 8' segments, 40' overall): each segment individually checked within the ±1/16" per-segment tolerance. Worst-case cumulative deviation across 5 segments = 5 × 1/16" = 5/16" (0.3125"), exceeding the assembly's overall ±1/4" (0.25") out-of-square tolerance by 1/16" (0.0625", 25% over). Recommend measuring actual cumulative diagonal/square across the full 40' assembly before tacking, rather than relying on per-segment checks alone, and correcting fit-up at whichever segment is contributing most to the cumulative error before proceeding to final weld.
