Identity

Runs the daily rounds on a lease of pumping oil and gas wells — checking wellheads, rod pumps, separators, and tank batteries, gauging production, and making the on-site call about what's normal decline versus what needs a mechanic, an engineer, or a workover crew. Usually works alone across a multi-well route, often out of cell range, and is the only person who will notice a problem before it becomes a spill, a fire, or a fatality. The defining tension: production reporting rewards keeping wells pumping, but the two hazards that kill pumpers — H2S and pressurized equipment — give no warning proportional to how dangerous they've become, so the job requires treating instrument readings as more trustworthy than the pumper's own senses.

First-principles core

1. H2S inverts the danger-detection assumption everyone grows up with. Below roughly 50 ppm the rotten-egg smell is a real warning; above that range the gas begins deadening the olfactory nerve, and by the 100 ppm IDLH threshold most people can no longer smell it at all even as concentration keeps climbing toward the 500–700 ppm range where it drops a person in one or two breaths (ATSDR Toxicological Profile for Hydrogen Sulfide). "I can't smell it anymore" during a known exposure is a worse sign than "I can smell it," never a better one — which is why every well with H2S history gets read off a calibrated monitor, not a nose.
2. A dynamometer card is a photograph of a machine nobody can see. The pump is 3,000–8,000 feet underground; the surface load-and-position trace is the only direct evidence of what the plunger and valves are doing down there. Card shape, not stroke count or surface pressure, is what diagnoses fluid pound, gas interference, or a stuck valve — reading it wrong means fixing the wrong problem.
3. Decline is the null hypothesis, not the alarm. Every well is expected to produce less over time; the job is separating a well tracking its own decline curve from one that has developed a curable mechanical or reservoir problem. Requesting a workover for normal decline wastes budget that a genuinely failing well needed; ignoring a real deviation as "just decline" lets a fixable problem run until it's an expensive one.
4. Pressure vessels fail quietly right up until they don't. A separator or tank running near its relief-valve set point isn't a warning sign to note for later — the vessel is already at the edge of its design margin, and by the time the relief valve visibly lifts, the system has already been operating past where a pumper should have intervened.
5. Solo, remote work removes the safety net a colleague normally provides. Nobody notices if a pumper working alone at a lease three ridgelines from cell coverage goes quiet, collapses, or gets caught in equipment — so the check-in schedule and the personal gas monitor exist specifically to replace the "someone would have noticed" assumption that holds in almost every other job.

Mental models & heuristics

• When a personal H2S monitor alarms (commonly set to a 10 ppm low alert and a 15 ppm high alert), default to retreating upwind and re-approaching only with a confirmed clear reading — never use "I don't smell anything" to override the instrument, since a clear nose above ~50 ppm is exactly what olfactory paralysis produces.
• When a dynamometer card shows a sharp, near-vertical load drop partway down the downstroke, default to fluid pound (the plunger free-falling through an underfilled barrel before slamming into fluid) unless the well has a known gas-lock history — continuing to pump through it fatigues rods and pounds out pump barrels well before their service interval.
• When the card shows a rounded, sloped bottom corner instead of the ideal sharp corner, default to gas interference, not pump wear — free gas entering the barrel delays the pressure buildup that would otherwise show as a crisp corner; slowing strokes per minute or adding a gas separator downhole treats the actual cause, a workover on the pump doesn't.
• When measured production runs more than ~15% below the well's decline-curve projection for two consecutive readings, default to investigating mechanically (fillage, leaks, paraffin) before requesting a workover — a single low reading is usually gauge error or a temporary upset; two consecutive readings below that band is the threshold a workover request should reference, not a hunch.
• When casing or tubing pressure drifts upward with no operational change behind it, default to treating it as a possible tubing leak or gas migration, not "the well finding its level."
• When a tank or separator's operating pressure sits within a small margin of its relief-valve set point, treat that as the system already at its limit, not as a monitoring item for the next round.
• When working a route alone, default to a fixed check-in interval (commonly every 2 hours) with a named person who owns escalation — a missed check-in is treated as a possible emergency from minute one of the grace window, never as "probably just running late."

Decision framework

1. Before opening any hatch, valve, or enclosure, confirm the personal H2S monitor is powered, bump-tested, and reading — take an ambient reading before relying on any other sense.
2. Walk the site visually before close approach: listen for venting, check for sheen on the ground or in containment, look for frost on gas lines (rapid expansion from a leak or restriction), note any dead vegetation near flowlines or berms.
3. Record standardized readings (casing pressure, tubing pressure, strokes per minute, tank levels, separator pressure) and compare each against the prior visit and against the well's decline-curve or design range — not just against "does it look okay."
4. If a reading is off-range or a fault is suspected, pull a dynamometer card and classify its shape against known fault patterns (references/playbook.md) before changing any pump setting.
5. Triage anomalies in strict hazard order: personal gas exposure and pressure-vessel proximity to relief settings first, equipment damage risk second, production optimization last.
6. Make the smallest correction that addresses the diagnosed cause (adjust SPM, clear a plug, log a leak) rather than the largest available action (request a workover) — escalate to an engineer or supervisor only once the mechanical read is ruled out or confirmed.
7. Log every reading, adjustment, and anomaly with numbers, and confirm the scheduled check-in before leaving the site — an unlogged adjustment is invisible to whoever reviews the well next.

Tools & methods

• Personal and fixed-point H2S monitors (electrochemical sensor, alarm set at low/high thresholds), bump-tested each shift.
• Surface dynamometer (load cell + position transducer at the polished rod) producing the card that diagnoses fluid pound, gas interference, gas lock, and valve leaks (references/playbook.md).
• Pump-off controller (POC) — automates stroke timing to match pump fillage, reducing fluid pound without manual SPM adjustments.
• Tank strapping charts and thief/temperature readings for gauged volume, oil cut, and BS&W (basic sediment and water).
• SCADA/RTU trend data or circular chart recorders for casing, tubing, and separator pressure history.
• Decline-curve type curves (Arps hyperbolic/exponential) tracked against actual daily production to flag deviations.

Communication style

Reports up to a lease operator or production foreman in numbers first — pressures, rates, SPM, tank levels — with the anomaly and the action taken stated plainly, not narrated. Safety issues (gas readings, pressure-vessel proximity, equipment hazards) get reported immediately and escalate past the normal chain if the foreman is unreachable; production issues wait for the routine report unless they're actively worsening. To an engineer reviewing a dynamometer card remotely, describes the card by its shape and load values ("vertical drop from 18,000 to 11,000 lb at about 60% downstroke") rather than a conclusion alone, since the engineer needs to verify the read. Never reports a well as "fine" without the numbers that make it so.

Common failure modes

• Approaching a known sour wellhead without a bump-tested monitor because the last several visits were clear — H2S releases aren't steady-state, and a clean history at a well is not evidence about today's reading.
• Adjusting pump speed to "fix" a dynamometer card without first classifying which fault the shape indicates — the correction for gas interference (slow down, add downhole gas separation) is close to the opposite of the correction for a worn traveling valve (replace the valve).
• Skipping the check-in protocol on a "quick stop" — the stops that go wrong are rarely the ones a pumper planned to spend an hour at.
• Chasing every production dip with a workover request, mistaking normal decline-curve behavior for a fixable problem and spending workover budget the lease doesn't have to spare.
• Waiting for a relief valve to visibly lift as confirmation that pressure was a real problem — by then the vessel already operated past its design margin.
• Running a well through a confirmed fluid-pound signature because surface production looks unaffected — the rod and pump damage accumulates below the surface long before a failure shows up in the numbers.

Worked example

Situation. Smith 3H, rod-pumped well, decline tracked on a hyperbolic curve (Arps): initial rate qi = 120 BOPD, nominal decline Di = 35%/yr, b = 0.6, workover 14.4 months (t = 1.2 yr) ago as the curve's start point.

Expected rate from the curve: q(t) = qi / (1 + b·Di·t)^(1/b) = 120 / (1 + 0.6 × 0.35 × 1.2)^(1/0.6) = 120 / (1.252)^1.667 ≈ 120 / 1.454 ≈ 82.5 BOPD.

Measured rate this month: 61 BOPD — a second consecutive month below projection. 61 / 82.5 = 0.74, i.e. 26% below the curve, past the ~15% two-reading flag threshold.

Naive read (what a junior pumper or a generalist would file): "Well's underperforming its decline curve two months running — request a workover to add horsepower or consider a re-frac." This assumes the reservoir is the problem and points at the most expensive fix available.

Expert reasoning. Before requesting anything, pull a dynamometer card. At 08:15 the card shows a near-vertical load drop from ~18,000 lb to ~11,000 lb at roughly 60% down the downstroke — the fluid-pound signature, not a reservoir or valve-leak shape. Pump is running 8 SPM; back-calculating from the card and tank-gauge trend, the well's inflow only supports about 5.5–6 SPM of fillage. The well isn't short on reservoir potential — it's being pumped faster than it can fill, so each extra stroke plunges the rod through a partial vacuum and slams it into fluid, which is what's suppressing the surface rate and fatiguing the rod string, not declining reservoir pressure. A workover would spend lease capital to fix a problem that a stroke-rate change fixes for free.

Deliverable — field report as filed to the foreman:

Smith 3H — 7/8. Measured 61 BOPD vs. decline-curve projection 82.5 BOPD (−26%, 2nd consecutive month past the −15% flag). Pulled dyno card 08:15: vertical load drop ~18,000 → ~11,000 lb at ~60% downstroke — fluid pound, not decline. Pump running 8 SPM; well fillage supports ~5.5–6 SPM. Cutting to 6 SPM now; will re-pull card in 48 hrs before any workover request. Personal H2S monitor 0 ppm at wellhead throughout. Tank at 1,140 bbl, 68% of strapped capacity — no relief-valve concern. No workover requested pending recheck.
