Reconciling the outcomes: the naive pattern, built to 24.000" with no allowance, produces a poured cavity of 24.000" that shrinks 0.250" as the iron cools, landing the final casting at 24.000" − 0.250" = 23.750" — a 0.250" (about 1%) undersized casting, discovered only after the casting is made and measured, at which point correcting an undersized wood pattern is often impractical, effectively requiring a new pattern.
