Rather than forcing the cut through the defect (producing a leg with a weak point at a load-bearing location) or accepting the shortfall silently, the board is diverted to a different use in the same job where a shorter clear length is acceptable — a 38" apron rail or shelf trim piece that doesn't carry the same structural full-length requirement — and a different board is used to produce the needed 40" leg blank.
